Ruth paced up the school building, her hair bouncing against the back of her neck, reaching class she sat down at the back, on the left, by the window, her usual seat and the blindspot of the security camera in the front of the room, she had no idea why the whole school had these, they were in every room, except bathrooms of course. Only a few people were in class at that time, just a couple girls, Cherry and Mina, chatting, and a group of jocks, who were making a considerable amount of noise. Ruth reached into her denim messenger bag and pulled out a black sketchbook, opening it there were mindmaps on every page, each started the same way, with someone's name in a little cloud, followed by arrows of their traits, personality and predictions. She turned to a page with the name 'Tyler' in a fitting, dark green cloud, drawing a couple more arrows she looked at him, studying closely, his school team hoodie seemed to have a little chilli stain on it, probably from the store down his street, TacoTells. She knew he lived in the area by looking at the little address engraved on his bag, and the knew that the diner was down the street because heck she'd memorised the state map, being bored one day. So if he was eating there for breakfast, it meant something was wrong with his house, his shoes did have some odd blue stains... ahh renovation! Maybe they're redoing the kitchen and he couldn't cook anything. Knowing the new piece of information Ruth jotted it down in her book, feeling pleased to have cracked another code.

Adrian entered the classroom with his single strapped backpack slung over one shoulder. He looked around and saw two girls and some jocks, people he didn't associate with. He'd always been a loner, kept to himself. The camera on the wall distracted him, and he smiled and waved at the lens. Why this school needed cameras was unknown to him, but he got to go for free, so he didn't complain. He let out a sigh and sat in the seat in front of a girl by the window. He wanted to be by the window, to look at the sky. It inspired him. He did sketches. It was the reason he was here. For him drawing came as easily as breathing, and it always turned out better than he had been imagined. He'd been called the Picasso of the modern age, the Michelangelo, the Da Vinci. For now though, he leaned back and daydreamed of the bright future he had ahead of him. Money would never be a problem. If you attended this school, you became as successful as you wanted, or even more successful than you wanted. After a moment he pulled out his notebook, leaving the black leather bound sketchbook in his bag. Opening it page after page of equations danced before his eyes. He flipped to a blank page and started another. Art and math, those were his talents, and if he ever lost one he'd have the other to fall back on. His tousled hair fell across his eyes, and he pushed it out as he furiously scribbled numbers, oblivious to the other students filtering in and class starting.

As Adrian strolled into class, Ruth was blocked off from Cherry, the cheerleader she was analysing, trying to figure out which taylor shop she had her perviously tiny skirt (Ruth knew since she remembered Cherry had worn it last Tuesday) altered even tinier, about 3.7 inches more if she wasn't wrong, but she was confident she wasn't she was never wrong about gauging distances. Anyway she realised she could let the skirt thing go for now, and focused on another target in front of her, Adrian... the modern Da Vinci, as most people call him, and as Cherry began to stand on the table and do flips (as she had an extremely good sense of balance) to show off, Ruth turned to Adrain's mind map, what shall she add today? Taking a short sniff of the air she smelt at least ten different scents, Cherry's perfume, Flora by Gucci, Tyler's Chilli breath, sweat from another jock's morning run, cheese pastries underneath one of the desks and Adrain's shampoo. Immediately her mind wandered to guess what shampoo it was, citrus, not overly fruity or cheap smelling, fresh... like mint. Her mind then went through all the scents of the shampoos in the supermarket she knew by heart... got it! Quickly she wrote it down, it was a popular, simple shampoo brand for men, mentally she added that it was a nice choice, for she thought the smell was awfully decent, she smiled a little to herself.

Adrian saw Cherry showing off, the pretty cheerleader was always showing off in her skimpy outfits. He appreciated her body, but she was overly pretty and almost slutty. No one was truly "slutty" in this prestigious school, per say, but there were some on the edge. Cherry was definitely one. Turning back to his equations he started to draw a mathematical symbol, but his led broke. He clicked the end of his mechanical pencil, but nothing came out. He clicked furiously, and then checked in his bag for spare lead. Nothing. With a deep and almost tragic sigh he turned around. "Hey um..." he said, not remembering her name. "Hey you, do you have some lead? I'm out." He shook the hollow mechanical pencil as if to prove his point. His hair fell into his eyes again, and he brushed it away. It wasn't long, but it did tend to fall across his field of vision. The girl was one he had seen before, almost every day in class, but he never really took the time to learn her name. He never really took the time to learn anyone's name. What was the point? They'd go to school together and then never see each other again. Why should he get to know people he wouldn't meet once they were all out in the real world. The ones he did know were artists and mathematicians and those who had rumors spread about them, like Cherry. Most of them, he would need to know.

Ruth's head snapped up just as he turned, snapping her sketchbook closed, she blinked a little at his question, it was hard to refocus her senses, "oh.. uh yeah, sure." she said softly, getting out some lead for him, "you should get it cut," she pointed to his hair, she never really meddled in people's business but it just happened to blurt out, not that she didn't like his hair, it looked pretty soft and nice on his head (why was she thinking these wrong thoughts), but it must be inconvenient. "Now now class settle down," said an old man in a lab coat, standing upright, banging his books on the large oak desk he clapped his hands together, "a text today! a pop quiz yes yes, hurry students get your papers together and let's begin!"

"I like it this way. It hides my eyes when I don't want people knowing what I'm thinking," he said. "Thanks... um..." He struggled to think of what name to call the girl by, but nothing came to mind. She wasn't drop dead gorgeous, but she was pretty in that secluded sense. The teacher shouted for order, and he rolled his eyes. "Yay, quiz," he mouthed to the girl and rolled his eyes before spinning around. He took out the stuff he would need for today's class and waited for the teacher in the lab coat to hand out the tests. He didn't dread pop quizes, but he didn't like them either. They were something that came with school, nothing more. "The quiz is over the materials we've been going over for the past two weeks," the teacher said, handing out papers. "There are only five questions, but the answers need to be at least a paragraph long. Good luck." He smiled in that smug way that teacher's smiled in when they were doing their job and making their students miserable. Adrian took his test from the man's hand and began filling in the blank space provided below each question. For such a talented artist, his handwriting left something to be desired. When he wanted to it was beautiful, but most the time it was chicken scratch. On question three he drew a blank... Come on, he thought, you know this. He wondered if the girl behind him was having any trouble.

((Ooc: I'm going on a church trip this weekend and I don't know if I'll be able to get on, it depends on if the hotel we're staying at has a computer I can use.))

Ruth took the paper wordlessly from the teacher and begun, as she concentrated she flashed up all the material they went through last week as if it were a video she could watch over and over again, she began to write, careful not to quote from the textbook for pages on end, she got disqualified for doing that last time, apparently teachers think you're copying answers, if she wanted to do that she could've just listened to the nearest person to her, for she could tell what letters they were writing by the sound their pen makes, this hearing was usually quite accurate too. She was on question 3 before she knew it, she looked up to recall the material again, and wrote. Her handwriting was messy, but somehow orderly highschool scrawl, not very high class, but it does the job. Soon the test was finished, the teacher collected in the papers and Ruth silently cracked her wrists under the table, for it was rude to do that in public, she scanned the class for how many people found it difficult.

Adrian bit his lip, but leaned back as if the whole thing had been easy. All of the questions had been easy as pie, except number three. He thought he had put down the right answer, but maybe not... To take his mind off of the trouble he pulled out his sketchbook. His pencil twirled his hand, and then began sketching and shading like lightning. At first he wasn't sure what he drew, but then the picture took form in his head and on the paper. It was the girl behind him, but she had somewhat of a robotic look on her face. It was almost as if something had been changed in her. He'd sketched like this before, but only if he knew the person well. It meant something was going to happen. It meant that she might end up with that dead look on her face, if nothing changed. He scrawled a simple note to her and set it on her desk. It said simply this, though messily written:

Meet me in the garden after class.

He then settled in and took notes as the class progressed. He needed to know why he had sketched the girl. It was a good thing there was no way for her to glance the sketch, seeing as his book was back in his bag and his muscular back had been blocking her view as he drew it.

Ruth handed in the test knowing she got the only perfect score in class, she'd already read her classmates, nervous expressions, habits emerging, lots of line making sounds as the answers they wrote were crossed through, unsure, but it was understandable, last week's topic covered at least 200 pages worth of textbook, maybe some people's skills weren't geared to superior eyesight and memory like hers. She picked up the note off her table and read it, tilting her head as she did. She did not remember any encounters with Adrian before, but it could be a good opportunity to gather more information to add to her mind maps.
The professor's voice interrupted her thoughts, "i would say i'm happy for this class, but that is unfortunately not true, obviously you didn't read through the material last week well enough, i don't see many good answers," Ruth noticed his fingers drumming, this meant he was about to say but, "but," ping, she was right, "there is one perfect score in the class, of which i suggest, Ruth Crosscard, meet me in the principle's office after class." Ruth didn't look surprised, all the people with perfect test scores, whether it was a physical or mental or IQ test, got sent to the principle's office. It was a privilege, an honour, but those students always came out a little different than they were when they once went in, normal people didn't notice it of course, but Ruth it, their voice became droning, their actions and feelings null, and almost... robotic. This made her consider her odds about whether or not to go...

Adrian was disappointed at the teacher's words. Damn, he thought, I knew I should have reviewed more. He slumped a bit in his seat as time wore down. When the teacher announced a Ruth Crosscard had gotten a perfect score he looked around to see who she was. People in the front seemed to be looking behind him, so it dawned on him that the girl was Ruth. At least he wouldn't have to try and explain that he didn't know her name and why he didn't know her name anymore. He felt his fist clench when the teacher said she needed to go to the office with him after class. When you went to the office after something like this, you didn't come back the same. Of course, Adrian had no personal experience with it, but his roommate had never been quite the same after going in the biggest office in the main building. All too soon the bell rang, and Adrian wondered what Ruth would do. He shouldered his bag and headed to the garden. This was his free period of the day, so he had all the time in the world to wait for her. If she didn't come back, he would know that his picture had come to be.

After class Flint packed her bag, proceeding to walk to the office, on the way there, she noticed there were people following her, they looked like school security guards, except more serious, and wearing black suits, they kept whispering into ear buds and tailing her in the most inconspicuous way, maybe this was a bad idea, maybe she shouldn't go, she should turn back, but they'd notice, damn. Making a quick decision she casually went into the nearest bathroom, she knew they couldn't follow her in there. Locking herself in a stall she opened the window above the toilet, she knew this particular toilet overlooked the school gardens, just where she wanted to be. Looking around she spotted the guy from her previous class, she had to find a way to signal him, getting back down she tore a piece of paper from a lined paper book and scrawled on it, she knew what he was thinking, she knew it all along since he sent her that note, she needed to tell him he was right, to come see her:
=You were right, i'm not going into the principle's office, i'm not going to become like that, meet me in the cafe opposite campus after school=
SHe paused for a moment, thinking whether or not she should add the next part, it was a little private, but figuring that she can, she should
=by the way, the sketch you did of me looked really pretty=

For awhile Adrian sat on a bench below a window that led somewhere unknown to him. His fingers tapped a worried rhythm on his knee as he wondered what had happened to the girl. He had no particular connection to her, but he didn't like how his roommate was never quite as fun after visiting the office. A paper airplane hit him in the back of the head, and he read it. Meet her in the cafe across from the campus? That he could do. Everyone knew of the place and students hung out there all the time, it wouldn't be a problem. The last part made him duck his head in embarrassment. He was used to the compliments, but fellow students didn't usually like the odd drawings he did at times. Taking the sketch out of his bag, he looked at it. How could she have seen it? Oh well. He looked back and above him, spotting Ruth in the window. What was she doing up there? What did it matter? "Do you need help?" he asked.

Ruth, managing to hear him shook her head and retreated back into the window, in the tiny bathroom stall she managed to jump and get the heating vent open, climbing inside and pulling her bag along with her, if she remembered corrected she should go straight, make two left turns and she'd end up in a supply closet close to the other side of campus, all she had to do then was rush to the exit and the school guards wouldn't be able to touch her without her calling the police. She knew this was something bad, and she knew she had to check it out, one way or another, but she felt a little scared, and that guy was her only lead, because he saw what could happen, a skill like that, as uncommon as it was, didn't surprise her, she had a gut feeling she had to talk to him, and her gut feelings are usually right. She climbed out of the vent into the dark, dusty room, picking the lock of the door she peeked her head out, then tried, as best as she could, to walk casually, but fast, out of the school.

Adrian turned away when she disappeared into the window. Not wanting to seem suspicious, he headed to the library and looked over some shelves of art books. He was eager to get to the cafe though, so he ended up leaving without checking one out. After a quick stop in the art room to get more charcoal and a fresh gum eraser, he crossed campus and entered the small place. He didn't see Ruth, so he sat at a table in the corner and ordered a hot chocolate. While he waited he took out his sketch book and examined her picture. Even with the robotic look on her face, she was pretty. He flipped the page and drew her again, this time without the blankness that those who went to the office had. Finishing it off, he signed it in the corner and set it on the table. It was much improved from his last one, being intentionally drawn instead of sketched because he felt he had to draw it.
