The dorm rooms are complete with three beds; one bunk bed and one separate bed, with an open kitchen, which has one refrigerator, one electric stove, with an oven attached, one stainless steel sink, counter space, a microwave, a toaster and cabinets. There is also an eating area, with room for electronic entertainment, and it is furnished with a low eating table with four cushions. There is also a bathroom with a toilet, sink, a shower.

Mana had been up for awhile now. Getting her stuff together, she went out to head to her class, hoping the Chinese Genius had some pork buns ready. With slow scan of the room, she exited.

The lights flickered for a second. The first sign something was going to happen.

In a matter of seconds, the building seemed to go black as the electricity went out in the hallways, then each dorm room lost all of its power.

The martial artist practically crawled into her bed and passed out, groping through the darkness to get there.

Ku Fei found her dorm room empty, a state that wasn't entirely unusual, and tossed her skates to the side. Fingers reached up to pull her blonde hair down as she headed for the bathroom, and more importantly, the shower. She was tired from spending the day on skates, and bone cold from the chill outside, but she'd wanted to finish her conversation with Brent.

Now that was a situation that really confused her. Ku Fei had never been big on physical relationships or intimacy, in part because she hadn't found anyone strong enough, and in part because she didn't really have a lot of interest. It did pass her mind as much as anyone's, but at the same time, she didn't gush over it the way some girls did.

Brent's show of strength had been just that, a show of physical strength, and while she was interested in that, and the way he'd done it, that interest was superficial. She was always interested in getting stronger, that was a basic tenet of the way she lived her life.

She stepped into the shower with a faint frown etched on her face. She'd finish off the food she'd brought with her when she was done showering, do her homework, or try, and go to sleep. It was the best thing she could figure on doing. It was also the only way that the last hour or so would make any sense to her. Maybe she'd be less confused, and conflicted, come morning. It was worth a shot, at least.

I-It was coming from here? B-But why? I wondered as I looked at the door in front of me. The pain was really starting to hit me full force as I touched the door knob and slowly opened it.

It wasn't lock? Was someone expecting me to come? I couldn't think straight, courtesy be damned, what is it that's making me drive my head crazy? I opened the door, as the pain slowly...resided?

What's going on? Why is this happening? I...what is that noise? It sounds like soft breathing? It sounds...peaceful...I-I shouldn't be here...but...

...I really shouldn't be here. I walked out of the room, allowing the person to sleep in peace.

DAWN OF THE FIRST DAY
72 HOURS REMAIN

"Ras teil mai magicscir magister!"

The morning of the first day of Mahorafest broke bright and sunny, promising good weather and fun times for all of the citizens and students of the city. Chao had awoken before her alarm and stood at the window, looking out over the festival-decorated city, the decorations seeming to have sprung up overnight.

Right on cue, the holoplate on her nightstand lit up, projecting the avatar of Pheidippides on its surface. The AI turned toward the Chinese girl standing at the window. "Well, I see that my services as a wake-up call are no longer required."

She smiled faintly. "It's Mahorafest. Nobody is going to be sleeping in the next three days-yo."

Pheidippides crossed his arms, tapping the scroll against his left bicep. "That may or may not be the case. Irregardless, all preparations are complete. Until the day of the event, you've nothing more to be concerned with."

"Semper vigilans, Pheidippides. We always have to be on-guard against someone or something throwing a wrench into our plans."

"That's true, but we have made as much preparations for every contingency that we possibly can. The only thing we can not prepare for is if the Covenant decide to show up on Earth's doorstep in the next few days."

The girl turned away from the AI at that remark, her face darkening in shadow. "That would put a real damper on everything I'm trying to accomplish, wouldn't it-ne?" she attempted to joke.

"Indeed." Mana responded, rising from the covers, smoothing her hair down as she got up and got dressed. It was slightly rare for Mana to sleep deeply like that, but it seemed with the anticipation of having her work cut out for her.

Chao turned as Mana awoke, then looked back out the window as the mercenary readied herself for the day. From their room, Chao could see the start of the parade route, were some clubs were beginning to gather to ready their last-minute preparations before the parade began in about four hours.

After a time, she shifted her stance so that the light entering the room would provide a reflection of the room on the glass, staring at the reflection of Mana. "Busy day ahead of you, then?"

The martial artist had been awake for some time, trying to force herself into a sleep that had never come. Finally giving up the fight, she rolled over with a sigh, tossing her blankets back and letting bare feet hit the floor. She was in shorts and a sleep shirt, a frown on her face.

"Is it really time-aru?" She turned to watch Chao, and Mana, before eyes cast down at the floor beneath her feet, and she shoved, standing up and going for her clothing.

"Chao-aru.. I think I need help.. I'm strong but.. I can't.. fight some of what these people have. Is there anything that can be done?" It wasn't that she was concerned about her fight, even though the boy had mentioned using magic. She was capable enough even with only her ki control to fight, but that wasn't the case. It was the fact that there were other strong fighters, and she wanted to last until the end of it.

"Ras teil mai magicscir magister!"

The distress in Ku Fei's words as she asked Chao what could be done hurt the Chinese genius deeply. It went against everything she knew of the other girl--both researched and observed in person--for her to be so unsure, so vulnerable.

And to be honest, there really wasn't anything that Chao could do. Rubbing the back of her head sheepishly as she seated herself on the windowsill, she offered, "There are a number of technical enhancements I could provide you-ne. Powered armor that can nullify a lot of magic abilities, bracers of power that can make you stronger and penetrate barriers, boots that increase your agility..."

She didn't even want to mention stims and adrenals that could increase reaction time, as just mentioning the augmented gear was almost enough of an insult; she knew full well that Ku Fei hated to use anything more than her own strength. But such technological enhancements were all she could provide.

In Chao's corner of the room, the holoplate lit up, projecting Pheidippides' avatar above it. "Actually, Lady Lingshen, there is one thing that might work..."

It took half a second for Chao to process what the AI meant, and she turned her head in his direction. "It can be done if I unseal my magic, sure," she said. "But there's no guarantee that it will remain if I reseal myself-yo."

"Then don't reseal," the AI answered matter-of-factly.

"Doing that would exponentially-increase the risk of detection."

Pheidippides shrugged, twirling the scroll in his right hand. "If ONI couldn't pick it up..."

Chao frowned. "ONI are amateurs compared to this day's thought police-ne."

"That may well be, but perhaps it is not only your decision to make, Lady Lingshen." The AI turned his attention to the other martial artist in the room, taking several processing cycles to refresh himself with her uncensored dossier that had been painstakingly-compiled over the years. To the outside world, however, there was no delay before he posed the query, "Lady Fei, what would you think of a provisional contract?"

The other martial artist started at him for several moments, blinking at the holoprojection of the AI.

"Provisional contract-aru?" The confusion was apparent on her face, the question answered with a question. She knew about magic, but most of the terminology still confused her, at least, to some degree.

"What would I have to do-ne? Would it hurt?" She shifted where she stood, trying not to betray her nervousness that Chao probably already knew she felt. She wasn't interested in the technological methods, though she knew they were sound, but not her preference.

"Quite the contrary, it wouldn't hurt a bit." The AI paused a moment, shrugged, then added, "Well, it might, given the contract method."

"Stop being morbid-yo," Chao frowned, crossing her arms.

"I was simply stating facts, Lady Lingshen." Pheidippides' avatar blinked out, and in its place he displayed an image of a blank tarot-like card. "A provisional contract, elsewise known as a 'pactio,' is a physical agreement between a mage, in this case Lady Lingshen, and any other person, in this case yourself. The contract, when active, provides limited magical empowerment from the mage, henceforth referred to as the 'magister', or magistra in Lady Lingshen's case, and the partner, henceforth referred to as the 'ministra.'"

Raising a hand to pinch the bridge of her nose, Chao held up her other hand toward the holoprojector. "Stop reading it like an encyclopedia entry-ne, Pheidippides." She wasn't necessarily saying that Ku Fei was too stupid to understand, but one of the flaws of Pheidippides' programming for the grandiose meant that he tended to like using big words to explain things.

"To make a long story short-ne, through the contract you get a buff from some of my magic power. It's not really an amount worth writing home about, but on your side of the contract you gain an artifact--the nature of which is somewhat random--to use."

"For ease of storage, the artifact is typically carried in the form of this card," Pheidippides added. "It can be summoned or de-summoned at will. Given the nature of your personality, I can say with high certainty that any artifact you would receive would be combat offensive in nature."

When Phei mentioned the contract method, she blinked, but waited for either he or Chao to continue with the explanation. And so she did exactly what she did in English class. She partially zoned out, inclining her head just slightly and listening, so she could try and take in as much as possible. Magic was still confusing, but not bad enough that she wasn't capable of following them.

When she spoke again, it was with concentrated effort, forcing her words slowly, so they weren't littered with her usual isms."So, the contract lets me draw on your magic and gives me something in return. A somewhat random artifact, but that is most likely to be combat augmenting?"

She sucked a breath inward, and her teeth worried at her bottom lip briefly, before she perked up. She was pondering, what would happen, and trying to counterbalance the risk versus the reward. Almost immediately, she made her decision, and passed her gaze between one and the other.

"So, how do we form a contract-aru? Will it hurt? Will it be tasty?"

"Ras teil mai magicscir magister!"

That question, the one that would invariably come up. Chao sort of looked off to the side, suddenly very interested in the world outside the window. For the first time in her life she felt grateful for the ONI magic limiters leaving permanent marks on her face that obscured natural color.

"The contract is performed by an exchange of bodily fluids," Pheidippides answered. "Blood pacts are not unheard of, with the magic involved preventing any complications from potential blood-borne illnesses, but this type of contract isn't very common. The most common method of contract is a simple kiss between the contractees, as this is quick and efficient. There have, however, been-"

And Chao was suddenly there, her fist crushing down and smashing the holoprojector plate before Pheidippides could finish the sentence, having gone from the window to her bedside not with the brief delay of a shundo, but an instantaneous transmission of movement unheard of in the magic communities.

Nonplussed, Pheidippides merely moved his projection to another holoplate sitting on a table in the center of the room. "Now that was quite rude, Lady Lingshen."
