As far as fabric goes, I made the ultimate "rag" skirt to go with my Halloween faery costume. I wanted something tattered so I was happy with the way it turned out and also happy I didn't have to try to be perfect
wink I might be doing something similar for personal use but a little bit longer and definitely not as tattered looking.
I took 2 different blue remnants, one small brown remnant, and one small red/white remnant to offset the blue scheme.
I started by ripping all of the fabrics in random lengths and widths. I then sewed them all around the borders so that I could get fraying along the edges but not have it completely unravel. Once those were done, I randomly sewed the big patches together. After I got one big tattered and patched piece of fabric, I ripped again and made 2 layers of shorter overskirt and slightly longer underskirt. In the end, I took some jaggedly cut tulle in lavender and sewed it underneath.

I think that, if I was to do it again I would make the skirt a little fuller so I don't have to wear one of my petticoats with it. I would also make the overskirt layer longer so that it doesn't get eaten by my belt.
This was also a last minute project (the night before!) so it ended up being to wide in the waist. I ended up pinning it tighter for the time being and adding a belt and a pouch over top.
