His father was a successful businessman and could not afford to have Claude come back with him; the illegitimate child could ruin his career. Despite desperate pleas from the woman to stay, he left her and returned home. He had no other children, as his wife was discovered as infertile. Year later, on his deathbed, he told his wife and family that he had fathered a child with another woman. His wife, devastated by the betrayal, had killed herself. His mother had sneered at the thought of having an "affair baby" rule the family business, but there were no other heirs. She flew quickly to London when Claude was 14 and convinced his mother, who was bankrupt and working two jobs (one as a barmaid at night and one as a receptionist during the day) that returning with her was the best for her son. Claude was quickly snatched from school and flown home. His grandmother died later and he was left with the family business and a large fortune. Obviously not cut out for the cold business world (and not wanting anything to do with the man who left his mother), he sold it for over 2 million dollars. He is currently the fifth youngest millionaire in the world. He frequently sends his mother letters and pictures. She refuses his occasional offers of money, convincing herself that she needed to earn to her money to live and visit her son. They are very close.
