So, my godfather originally agreed to pay my tuition and whatnot, but because I went to college instead of university, he refused to. Now, I'll be graduating from college in May, and he now says if I transfer over into third year of a university (so that I can get a BSW in addition to a college social service work diploma), he'll pay my tuition. And originally he wanted me to go away to a university, but since I'm already in debt from collecting OSAP (student loan) for my two years of college, he says it's fine if I attend the university back home and therefore have no extra living costs. I'm not sure what I want to do though - in my field of work, a BSW will only get you a couple extra jobs, not an extensive amount, because as long as I'm an RSSW (registered social service worker) with a diploma, I can get a great amount of social working jobs. The BSW would only open a few more doors, but is it really worth an extra two years of education? In addition, I'd have to start paying back my loan while attending the university, since you have to start paying it back six months after graduating - so even if I transfer over, I'll have had a post-secondary graduation already.

Does the degree will increase your potential salary?

Well, they've told us at the college that whether we only have a diploma or a degree, social workers don't make much money - we go into the field simply because we want to help people.

If that's the case maybe it's not worth it to go to the university unless you really wanted to have a degree. I asked about the potential salary since I am a Registered Nurse.
In Nursing we have the registered Practical Nursing ( which is 2 years in college with Diploma, and the licensure exam to be registered) and Bachelors of Science in Nursing to become a registered nurse ( which is 4 years in university and licensure exam to be registered). Registered Practical Nurse, when I looked up before, makes $21-29 Cdn dollars per hour while Registered Nurses makes $29-$40 Cdn dollars and more if you have your Masters, or if you are a clinical specialist, etc. So there is pay salary difference there.
-If you are a registered practical nurse and wanted to get Bachelors to become a registered nurse, you can always do the Bridging Courses in a University which usually takes 3 years.
-Now about OSAP, you have to contact them if you are planning to go to University. You can continue borrowing from when you go to University. Since in the end of the a year, they send you letter, right? saying if are done school or are you going back to school. So if they know you are still a full-time student you may not pay right away.

I found this in workpolis, social worker . You can get paid pretty well, but they need Masters of Social Work Degree. Maybe its worth it to get a Degree then Masters afterwards. here's another one http://www.recruitingsite.com/csbsites/haltonhealthcare/careers/JobDescription.asp?JobNumber=649351. (Oh, and this is in Ontario, I don't know what province you came from...)
Furthermore, hospitals usually pay better than other organization as far as I know unless you
are a pharmacist that own your own drugstore.
So I think you should research more about your career.

Well, it's not precisely 'social worker' as my career - as a college graduate, I can only be a 'social service worker' which is slightly different. We just always refer to ourselves as social workers.

Technically, as a social service worker, most of our jobs aren't called 'social service worker' jobs - we will more likely be hired as a 'case worker' or 'counselor' or whatnot.

I see, that clarify some stuff...so what's the name of the degree you are planning to take in university?

I'm not planning anything anymore, as I asked a student who took my program and went to get the degree afterward, and she says you can't get advanced standing - you have to do a full three and a half years of the four years just to get the BSW, since very few credits actually transfer over. The university that shares a campus with my college is opening up a social work department in September 2013, where we can get advanced standing since they're working it perfectly with the college's social service work program - but that'll be over a year after I graduate from college, and my godfather is not willing to wait a year (if he pays for my university, it has to be September 2012, and I have to get advanced standing, so it won't work out).

i went to university, and i'm wishing i'd done a two year college degree instead. i would probably have a job now, i would have less debt, and i could have bought a 30thousand dollar car for what i spent on my useless linguistics degree.

Two year college diploma. razz But yeah, I hear from lots of people who went to universities that they wish they'd gone to college instead. My aunt did university back in the day, and she's in college now because she couldn't do much with her degree. I was considering it when I wrote this thread, but I decided against it afterward for a number of reasons - one now being that I'm moving out and getting a place with my best friends (an engaged couple) and my boyfriend in a few months, which means that I can't afford even more debt.

I'm just wondering, what's the difference between a college and a university? To me it's basically the same since we only have universities over here. But isn't the degree somewhat the same?

We don't have degrees in college here, but the education is similar. College is more applied learning though, where you get experience - so university students usually have a lot more education in their field, but college students have more experience in the field. I can still become a registered social service worker (the college version of a 'social worker') with a college diploma, I don't need a university degree in social work.

Oh I see, pros and cons for everything lol I wish there was a lot more experience here than just the educational part. But as long the results more or less are the same then it's all good

i am going to college in september.
my university has the Bachelor in Social Work as well as the Master's in social work. i've been told by countless people that you need a master's in social work to be considered a licensed social worker. it's hard to get into the bsw at my school, i know people who have tried coming from getting their ssw diploma in college and most of them got let into the school but into psychology or sociology instead of bsw.
