At the start of the series, a young girl named Ichigo Momomiya attends an endangered species exhibit with her 'crush' and future boyfriend, Masaya Aoyama. After an earthquake, Ichigo and four other girls are bathed in a strange light. A cat appears before Ichigo, then merges with her. The next day she begins acting like a cat and, after meeting Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka, learns that she was infused with the DNA of the Iriomote Cat. Ryou and Keiichiro explain that this allows her to transform into Mew Ichigo, a powerful heroic cat girl. She is ordered to defeat chimera animals—alien parasites—which infect animals and turn them into monsters. Ryou and Keiichiro instruct Ichigo to find the four other girls from the exhibit—the remaining Mew Mews. They are Mint Aizawa, a spoiled, wealthy girl who is infused with the genes of the Ultramarine Lorikeet; Lettuce Midorikawa, a meek but smart girl who endures constant bullying and absorbs the genes of the Finless Porpoise; young Pudding Fong, who receives the genes of the Golden Lion Tamarin; and Zakuro Fujiwara, a professional model infused with the genes of the Gray Wolf.

I'll be doing this in parts/sections so it's not all one big, overwhelming essay of a post. Please note that though it may look like it, this is not copied from anything. I just have a really formal writing style when it comes to informative posts and the like.
Warning: Slight spoilers. Nothing major, but just know you've been warned. razz
Part One:
The Beginning
The main protagonist is a girl named Ichigo Momomiya. She is 13 years old and prior to the events that make up the plot of the series, her only care in the world is her crush, Masaya Aoyama, and her hope that he might like her. One fateful day, she gets up the nerve to ask him to go to an exhibit on endangered animals (aka "Red Data" animals. I believe this is how endangered species are referred to in Japan and possibly other areas near it.). As Aoyama is a major advocate for nature, he eagerly agrees. While Ichigo is out with him that weekend, Aoyama goes off to get them some sodas from a nearby vending machine. Ichigo has a brief moment of celebration, feeling on to of the world now that she's finally enjoying a day alone with Aoyama. Suddenly, everything changes, as two young men inside a cafe nearby begin a project known as the "Mew Project," meant to help save the world by injecting endangered animal DNA into destined targets. Ichigo is standing, alone, in the middle of a park nearby, and when a beam of red light penetrates the area, she experiences a strange vision, which she thinks is some kind of dream, where a little cat (later to be discovered as the endangered Iriomote Cat) walks up and joins with her body, adding its DNA to her own.
Later Ichigo wakes with no idea what happened, and her life goes on as normal for some time. Until, that is, while walking home from school, Aoyama is attacked by a strange, giant rat-creature, which attacks Ichigo when she comes to see what's going on. Unable to defend herself, Ichigo flinches, and is rescued by Ryo Shirogane, one of the men responsible for the Mew Project. He tells her she is special and gives her a pendant which enables her to transform into an alter ego of herself who has the Iriomote Cat's DNA, shown via a pair of black cat ears and a matching tail. Ichigo is in shock, and suddenly realizes her "dream" about the cat fusing with her was no dream after all. After summoning her weapon for the first time and learning to use her new powers, Ichigo is officially made the first member and leader of the team she must now find and put together. In addition, she is expected to work in the cafe as a cover and another means of searching for her teammates.
Character Info: Name: Ichigo Momomiya Age: 13 Hair color: Red (human)/Pink (mew) Eye color: Brown (human)/ Magenta (mew) Animal DNA: Iriomote Cat Weapon: Strawberry Bell (and later in the series, the Mew Aqua Rod) Attack(s): Strawberry Check, Strawberry Surprise (basically a more powerful version of Check), and, when using the Mew Aqua Rod, Mew Aqua Gutte (pronounced Guh-tuh). (the latter attack and more in-depth info on Mew Aqua and the Mew Aqua Rod will be mentioned in a later part)

Part Two:
Meeting the Team
The first team member Ichigo encounters is Minto Aizawa, aka Mint. Mint is a wealthy girl Ichigo's age, and loves to do ballet. Ichigo meets Minto for the first time while walking home from school. A small dog runs up to Ichigo, who picks him up and holds him while he proceeds to lick her cheek excitedly. Moments later, a girl in a nice dress with her hair up in odango walks up and takes the dog, coming across as polite yet stuck up as she tells Ichigo the dog is hers and scolds the dog for licking a common person. (To those not familiar with it, odango is a Japanese hairstyle where the hair is tied up in two buns, one on either side of the head. It is called "odango" because the buns supposedly remind people of dango, which are little round dumplings.) The girl introduces herself as Minto Aizawa and gives Ichigo a fancy handkerchief to clean her face with. Ichigo is surprised at the softness of it, and when she offers it back after using it, Minto rejects it with a slightly stuck-up air and gets into a car to be taken home.
Later on, Ichigo is sitting alone with Masha, a tiny robot given to her by Ryo, when she notices Minto exiting a building nearby, where a ballet performance has just been held with Minto as the star. Ichigo tries to engage in a conversation, interested by Minto's hobby, but is once again ignored by the wealthier girl. Ichigo decides to follow Minto home and return her handkerchief, whether Minto wants it back or not. Upon arriving, she meets a pleasant elderly woman who acts as a housekeeper for the Aizawa family. When Minto comes down to see what's going on, Ichigo offers once again to return the cloth, and is told quite firmly to leave. After a bit of irritated fussing, Ichigo starts to head home.
Miki, Minto's dog, follows her outside and watches her walk away. Then, a small, jellyfish-like creature with a glowing center, much like the one that mutated the rat in the park and attacked Aoyama, drifts into view next to Miki's head, and when Miki turns to look at it, it fuses with him. Miki becomes crazed and feral, and walks back inside, where a concerned Minto is walking downstairs again to search for him. Minto notices Miki is acting strange and wonders what's going on, at which point the mutation takes place and Miki becomes a Chimera Animal, a combination of an animal and the alien parasites which had fused with him and the rat. In a blind rage, he attacks his master, no longer recognizing her. Ichigo, who is still just outside the house at this point, hears the commotion and rushes inside to help. She transforms and stops Miki from harming Minto. Minto is confused and very scared, and distracts Ichigo by asking what's going on. While Ichigo is busy trying to respond, Miki takes advantage of the chance and slams his now giant paw into them, sending both girls sprawling across the floor. Ichigo notices a marking on Minto's back, the exact kind of mark she has been told to look for when searching for teammates. She encourages Minto to transform, and Masha floats over and spits out a pendant much like Ichigos. Minto protests that she can't transform, and at that precise moment, Miki strikes again. Minto panics and grabs the pendant, crying out in fear. A blinding light floods the room and Minto transforms into her own alter ego, with the DNA of a bird known as the Ultramarine Lorikeet. As she stares in shock at her new form, Ichigo tells her to help fight, and Minto again protests that she can't. Ichigo tries to reassure her, saying to her calmly, "You transformed, didn't you?" At this, Minto realizes Ichigo has a point, and summons her weapon, a small bow which fires heart-shaped arrowheads made of what seems to be energy. After a couple attacks and a finishing blow from Ichigo, the alien parasite seperates from Miki's body and Miki returns to normal. Masha collects the parasite, as he does with every parasite after it has been defeated and seperated from its respective host. Minto hugs her dog, crying and exclaiming how happy she is that he's back to normal and unharmed. Ichigo smiles and invites her to join the team, and Minto says that because Ichigo saved her beloved Miki, she will accept.
The final scene of the two consists of Minto at the cafe, in her new waitress uniform. She and Ichigo have a brief conversation, which leaves the clear impression that their new bond is somewhat of a love-hate friendship, as Minto hasn't changed and still thinks herself somewhat better than Ichigo.
Character info: Name: Minto Aizawa Age: 13 Hair color: Black (human) blue (mew) Eye color: brown (human) blue (mew) DNA: Ultramarine Lorikeet Weapon: Minto Bow Attack: Minto Echo
Fun fact: The word used to start each of the mews' attacks is mistranslated in most English subbed versions of the series. It is subbed as "Ribbon," but in fact information has shown that it is meant to be "Reborn."

Meeting the Team Continued
The third member of the Tokyo Mew Mew team is met while Ichigo is in a rush to get to school, due to the fact that she overslept. She rounds a corner and collides head-on with a tall, lean girl who was carrying several schoolbags. The girl introduces herself as Retasu (aka Lettuce) Midorikawa and apologizes like crazy for running into Ichigo. Ichigo helps her pick up the bags, and Retasu hurries off.
Later, Ichigo sees Retasu again, this time at Cafe Mew, at a table with three very mean-looking girls who are clearly giving Retasu a hard time. It is made clear that these are the girls whom Retasu was carrying the bags for earlier, though they were not present in the previous scene. In an act of kindness, Ichigo stands up for Retasu by "accidentally" spilling a tray of parfaits on the obnoxious trio. Keiichiro Akasaka, the other man behind the Mew Project, offers to help the girls clean up and apologizes for his employee's "clumsiness." The girls eagerly follow, charmed by Keiichiro's looks and gentlemanly personality. Ichigo uses this as a chance to approach Retasu and speak to her about the issue, but Retasu insists things are fine and that the girls are her "friends." She then makes a hurried excuse to leave and exits the cafe.
A few days later, once again at the cafe, Ryo comes to Ichigo and Minto and discusses what is thought to be a Chimera Animal causing chaos and destroying the pool at a local school. (It is a different one than Ichigo's.) He tells them to go that night and investigate, and Minto mentions that it might be some kind of ghost, at which Ichigo freaks out. Ichigo panics, making it quite clear she doesn't want to go because she hates ghosts, but ends up being forced to go.
At the school that night, the two girls wander the campus in search of whatever is causing all the mayhem. They find nothing at first, even after a great deal of exploring. Here we get a glimpse of a boy about the girls' age, hovering in mid-air outside the school, watching the girls search around. His eyes are hidden in shadow to conceal his identity for the time being, but he appears to be behind the Chimera Animals, as his presence is made to seem ominous and dark. He disappears, and a loud noise is heard as a strange, living glob of water comes from somewhere inside the school, passing Ichigo and Minto and crashing through a window. Minto immediately transforms and follows, but Ichigo is afraid and takes another way out, showing up just as Minto lands at the side of the school's pool, where a massive whirlpool is forming. The two Mew Mews watch as the whirlpool shape-shifts into a gigantic wolf made of water and bears down on them. With a simple attack from Minto's bow, the beast is taken down. Ichigo comments about how the battle seemed too easy, and suddenly a green light is seen as the two girls notice Retasu across the pool from them, glowing with said light. She suddenly transforms and attacks them, scared and out of her senses, thinking they've come to pick on her. The two are caught off guard, and Minto takes a hard hit, falling to the ground. Ichigo gets upset about this and tries to tell Retasu off, getting another attack for her efforts. Retasu yells back that she's sick of being picked on and tries to attack again. By now, Minto is back on her feet and shows clear shock as Ichigo prepares to attack back. Instead of actually attacking Retasu, Ichigo suddenly cuts off in mid-attack as Retasu flinches, and tackles her playfully, knocking her into the pool and falling in with her. She tells Retasu that they are there to help her, and that they can be her friends. Retasu smiles and happily accepts, and thus becomes a member of the team.
Character Info: Name: Retasu Midorikawa Age: 14 Hair color: dark green (human) lime green (mew) Eye color: brown (human) lime green (mew) DNA: Finless Porpoise Weapon: Retasu Casanets Attack: Retasu Rush
Fun fact: Although her DNA is that of a water mammal, Retasu cannot swim.

Meeting the Team Continued
Between the discovery of the third member of the team and the episode in which the fourth is found, Ichigo meets the mysterious boy from before, who initiates contact with her by dropping from nowhere and kissing her, which leaves her in total shock. The boy is pale-skinned, wearing a strange outfit and bearing very large, pointed ears. He introduces himself as Kishu and proclaims that Ichigo is his new toy. Later on he is seen at a carnival Ichigo goes to with Aoyama, and causes chaos. The other two mews, Minto and Retasu, show up and aid in his defeat, but Kishu insists he will return and leaves with a flirty comment directed at Ichigo. A few more episodes go by with more sightings of Kishu, who starts using special alien parasites and fusing them with pure human souls instead of animals, thinking this will be a more effective method of eradicating the mews so his race can take over the planet.
Another day, while at the park, Ichigo stops for a rest while carrying some groceries back to the cafe. She stops to sit on a park bench and enjoys the moment of relaxation. She is startled when a small girl in a bright orange outfit pops out of the bush behind her and offers to do some tricks for her. After an impressive, daredevil stunt show, the girl asks for tips. Ichigo, though very pleased by the show, has no money left and instead gives her candy and tries to get away with it by bolting with her groceries. The little girl follows, making a scene and attracting attention from many people. Ichigo is embarrassed and doesn't know how to react. Suddenly the girl pulls out a top hat and says she knows just the trick to get a real tip from Ichigo. Out of the hat, she pulls a huge shark. Ichigo panics, and her cat ears and tail pop out, as they have become habit to do when she is embarrassed or scared. The shark grabs her tail in its teeth, and the crowd claps excitedly, thinking it's part of the stunt. Ichigo hurries away and hides, and the girl follows her, popping up again and begging Ichigo to teach her how she made the ears and tail appear. Ichigo tells her she can't, but the girl doesn't listen and excitedly bounds around, thinking she's getting to learn a great new trick.
Ichigo tricks the little girl, whose name turns out to be Purin Fon (aka Pudding), by giving her a fake training exercise and running off while Purin is distracted. Purin catches up with Ichigo a shorttime later while Ichigo is talking to Retasu, who came looking for her at Ryo's request. Purin yells at Ichigo, telling her she was mean for running off instead of teaching her how to grow cat ears. Ichigo drops her groceries and runs for it, leading Pruin on a chase all over town. Exhausted, Ichigo eventually stops for a break and Purin catches up, snatching the handkerchief Ichigo was about to use and telling her she has to teachher the cat-ear trick to get it back. Ichigo finally snaps, telling Purin off and saying she should stop bothering older people. Purin's enthusiasm fades, and she sits there, upset, as Ichigo walks away.
Into the evening, as the sun begins to set, Purin is back in the park, riding her giant ball and trying to get cat ears on her own. As she touches her cat-ear-less head, feeling discouraged, Kishu shows up again. When Purin asks him who he is, Kishu claims he is an angel who "fell from heaven to grant her wish." Purin calls him a liar and says, "An angel wouldn't have an evil face like that!" Kishu responds by telling her off and attempting to steal her pure soul. Suddenly Kishu is hit by the ball, which was kicked very hard at him by Ichigo, who has shown up in her mew form to rescue Purin. After grabbing Purin and trying to evade Kishu's fierce attacks, Ichigo spots the rest of the team up ahead of her, and the team takes on a Chimera Animal created with another soul Kishu had collected earlier. The fight is rough until Purin's forehead begins to glow, revealing her marking, which consists of two curled monkey tails forming an oval. Her DNA is revealed to be that of the Golden Lion Tamarin, a kind of monkey. With her help, the team beats Kishu's chimera animal and Kishu once again leaves, promising to be back again soon. Purin then joins the team and is welcomed as the fourth Mew Mew.
Character Info: name: Kishu age: unkown, appears to be 13 hair color: very dark green eye color: amber (orange-yellow) Race: alien weapons: Dragon Swords (they look like weapons known as Sai, which are dual, forked swords often used by ninja.)
Name: Purin Fon age: 8 hair color: pale blond (human) bright yellow (mew) eye color: golden brown (both forms) DNA: Golden Lion Tamarin weapon: Purin Ring attack: Purin Ring Inferno

The final member of the team is a rising star in Tokyo, A model and upcoming actress by the name of Zakuro Fujiwara. Ichigo and friends initially discover her after a string of recent Chimera attacks at night are fended off by a "mysterious beauty." Purin shows Ichigo and the others a news article about it, and Minto, upon seeing the image, is convinced it is her idol, Zakuro. Ryo and Keiichiro send the group to audition for a movie Zakuro is starring in as a means of trying to find out if she is the final member. After some hijinks and drama at the audition, the group returns to the cafe with no information. Later they make continued attempts to get through to Zakuro, who ignores and rejects them, insisting she has no time for friends. Finally, after a showdown with Kishu, it is proven that Zakuro is indeed the final member. Initially when asked yet again to join, she repeats herself, saying "I don't need friends..." but just as the group becomes discouraged, she turns to them with a smile and says that just for once, she can give it a try. And thus, the team is completed and the five girls start their quest to save the world.
Character info: Name: Zakuro Fujiwara Age: 15 Hair color: violet (human) purple (mew) Eye color: blue (human) purple (mew) DNA: Gray Wolf Weapon: Zakuro's Whip Attack: Zakuro's Pure (mistranslated as Zakuro Spear)
Additional info: More drama and issues unfold, with more characters getting involved and many surprises. For the sake of not spoiling too much, I won't share anymore plot info. I will however include details on some of the other characters involved in the show.
Pai Pai is another alien who works with Kishu and a younger alien named Taruto. Pai is calm and emmotionless, and serves as the mature, logical factor in the trio. He is very serious and sees Kishu as a failure for taking so long to beat the mews. Pai appears to be a year or two older than Zakuro.
Taruto Taruto is the third alien involved in the plot to take the Earth. He specializes in plant chimeras and is very loud and childish. He appears about Purin's age and gets into struggles with her a couple times.
Deep Blue Deep Blue is the mysterious and mostly unseen leader of Kishu's race. During much of the series we see him as a wall of turqoise energy, and his voice is very high and childlike. It is believed that early in the series, he is not fully "developed," and Kishu states this in one episode, saying Deep Blue exists as "an embryo" and that he is "not yet born." Part of the alien plan is to help Deep Blue reach full maturity so that he can lead the assault on the Earth.
