I'm off now until the 31st. Anyone else have a reading week now, or coming up? I know some schools call it different things - I've heard 'fall break' and 'study week'.
My school is technically calling it 'remedial week' now, but my profs and all the students are calling it 'reading week' since that's what it was always called before. As well, it's not really remedial for everyone - only those who aren't doing well in their classes have to worry about catching up, and I'm definitely doing well this semester. So I have nothing to worry about besides seeing my boyfriend, friends, and family for a week! biggrin

bear eating a salmon we don't get reading week in the fall, which sucked, because the other university in my city does. I don't know any other colleges that get a fall reading week, but all the universities I hear about often enough (which is really just Nipissing and Laurentian, as Laurentian is in my hometown and Nipissing is on my campus) do get them in the fall. My college just started doing them in the fall because they're doing this new 7-1-7 system, where a semester includes seven weeks of classes, one week break, and then another seven weeks of classes. I suppose it's so that first and second semester have equal class time, as second semester would have a reading week and therefore get one less week of classes.

I have a friend at Algonquin College, she was actually pretty pissed that I got a week back in our hometown and she didn't. Of course, this is also because she's always seeing herself as, "competing," with me, since we have the same best friend - and she doesn't like that our best friend wants to move into a place with me, and wants to spend more time with me. It's childish of course, but she wanted to see this friend during the break, and was pissed that I got to, and she didn't. Cambrian, back in my hometown, didn't get one so my boyfriend didn't have a week off - so I stayed with him, since I'd only get to see him at night.

At my college we're lucky which professors give us the week off. Normal professors would make us go Monday and Tuesday, but I lucked out this term and got the whole week off. I used it to get ahead on some assignments, finals projects (finals are in 3 weeks for me) and work extra hours.

The profs have absolutely no say in this once the admin decides, but they seem to agree with reading week. They take that week to meet with all the other profs in the program, apparently, and discuss students in their classes who are failing or are in danger of failing - that way can get an idea of which students might benefit from tutoring.

Depends on the type of college attended. I've going to a Community College where we get National/Federal/State holidays off but are required any other days unless the professor decides to take a day off. When I went to a trade school, it was up to us (a completely weird system) whether we came or not since it was self-paced on the curriculum without lectures. At the University I went to, same at the currently Community College but was on a semester basis instead of quarter so we were given a Fall break.

No, here it doesn't depend - everywhere it's the administration that decides. But considering you say, "community college," and also, "National/Federal/State," then I understand that you're American. So obviously there are going to be differences between our system and yours. But yeah, every college here has a reading week, as does every university - just some colleges only have a reading week in one semester, and some have one in both (whereas most universities have one in both). My college only had one in the second semester until this year, when they started following this new 7-1-7 format (seven weeks of class, one week off, another seven weeks of class). I don't know if it's like that in the entire country, but it's like that in my province - we get holidays off, and reading week, but we're required to attend every day otherwise unless the prof is absent (even last year, when a snowstorm caused an accident that blocked off the road to the college, it was still mandatory to be there).

That sound very interesting! I was wondering why type of system other countries were on; I never looked into it much since I decided not to study abroad. I have a friends in Quebec/Ontario/London to see what their systems are. I know in the states, it all differs depend on how the college/uni is set up (quarters/semester/self-paced/trimesters/ect.) We just recently switched to no breaks during the quarter, but 3 weeks off between finals and the starting of the next quarter. I'd rather have the break between myself lol.
