I could possibly be fading
Or have something more to gain
I could feel myself growing colder
I could feel myself under your fate

Yes, yes Mira has like fifty other projects that are collecting dust, including that Nightmare Cafe that has some requests.
Also, the yaoi part of her stories has been lacking.

Fear not, there IS yaoi in this one (just not in the first chappie)

Title is from the Mazzy Star song, which you can hear in the recent Gears Of War 3 commercial (and then go look up the band). The timeline for this story is during the current manga storyline, and as always, the OC's belong to their respective owners (So far Shi, Meiro, Lethe, and Mnemosnye are mine) and Naruto and the canon characters belong to Kishi.

Uh, not entirely sure who filler characters belong to. I'm assuming the anime studio.

Enjoy!

Chapter One

“Who knows? Not me
We never lost control.
You’re face to face
With the man who sold the world.”
-David Jones

The dark-clad blond boy with deep blood-red eyes walked unseen through the battlefield, his arms holding open a book almost too big for him to carry and yet he still was writing in it with a quill made of a black feather, dipping it into an invisible well that had ink the same crimson color of his eyes.

All around him were the bodies of the fallen, his black cloak brushed against the last shimmering of their souls and then those were gone, and only the corpse was left.

“This seems an awful lot for such a small one to carry,” a voice said, and he glanced up to see the woman with flowing midnight hair and piercing amythest eyes, “Have you thought of using those servants that I created for you?”

“Lethe and Mnemosyne process them when they enter my realm,” he said quietly as he returned to his work, never once placing down his quill, “I do not require any further help than that Sister.”

“And yet, you still have those who you’ve allowed to collect a debt,” she smiled, “It seems that you are getting sentimental in your old age Brother.”

“Is there a reason for this interruption of our duties?”

“I am going to be disappearing for a time.”

“Not surprising, you’ve done it once before,” he did pause now, staring at her, “You’re planning to interfere again.”

She chuckled, “No, not this time Brother,” reaching into the air, she plucked out a clear glass sphere, “Have you ever examined the memories of the ones you collect?”

“That is the job of the servants you gave me,” he said as he started writing again, “I have no business to know why they came to my realm, just that they did.”

“Why did you open his then?”

“If I remember correctly, you had forced that particular deal upon me.”

“Why won’t you admit that you’re lonely?”

“Why do you insist that I am?” he glared at her, “I have no Companions, remember your own visions.”

She held up her hands in defeat, “Perhaps I merely worry over you, with myself removed from your life, you’ll have no one but that one to talk to. And he does have his own things.”

“With you gone, then I can perform the simplest task with no interruptions. If I’m lucky you will leave without setting in motion any of those obscene plans you have to manipulate the flow of events.”

“I have explained that I have nothing to do with the wars that these mortals rage, those are the doings of our joint parents.”

“And yet the pawns they use are the descendants of that infant you refused to kill,” he pointed out, “If I never had to cross that name from my book, then they might have some semblance of peace now.”

“They would stagnate then,” a silver doorway appeared next to her, “And what fun would that be to watch?”

He caught the glass ball that she had tossed at him before disappearing, “Look into that one Brother!” her voice called back, “I think that you will find it rather interesting!”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“It’s your choice,” the girl with raven hair neatly pulled into a bun said as her golden eyes swept over the gathered shades, “Either you drink from the waters I give and forget your past misdeeds and move quietly to the afterlife and your next incarnation, or you try to convince my twin sister,” here she nodded at the pale girl with the dishevled raven hair that was squatting a few feet away as she drew in the dirt with a stick, “To give you the waters she guards and then attempt to go back to where you lived and watch over your descendants,” she crossed her arms over her spotless indigo yukata, “Personally, I don’t give a damn which you choose, but know that Mnemosyne does not just give her…” her eyes widened as her sister walked towards the shades, holding her hands out to touch each one, “Give me a second,” she growled as she flashed over to her and took the sleeve of the dirt-caked indigo yukata that her sister was wearing, pulling her aside, “Just what are you doing?!”

Mnemosyne peered at Lethe through the uneven bangs covering her golden eyes, “They spent so much time making those memories, why shouldn’t they keep them?”

“Because Master said that the waters you guard will dry out if we just give them to everyone!” Lethe hissed, “Besides, most of these idiots need to forget so that they can move on! Or did you forget what happens to a soul with a debt!?”

The younger twin smiled, “Those make the prettiest fireflies though.”

“And what happens if one of those bugs makes it to a mortal that has the means to get into our realm?” the eldest glared at her, “Remember what Mother warned us about? The white snake that can call the souls? What happens if he decides he wants the memories that the technique doesn’t recall?”

“My waters are for all that ask,” Mnemosyne started, blinking when Lethe covered her mouth as she glared at the shades.

“Ignore the idiot girl and drink from that river!” she snapped as she pointed, “You really wanna remember the suffering…”

“It is hard for you to achieve peace in your next life if you still have the sins of this one,” a voice chuckled, and the twins looked up to see the woman that had been speaking to their master a few moments before, “Lethe, perhaps if you weren’t so rough with the recently departed, we wouldn’t have this problem. Though Mnemosyne, you do need to guard your waters better. There are some things that are better to forget.”

At those words, the shades moved towards the river of oblivion, and she walked towards the girls, “Mother, what brings you here?” Lethe asked, stepping protectively in front of her sister.

“Hasn’t your sister told you yet?” she said sadly, “I only brought out the spirits of the river, I created neither one of you,” she turned to Mnemosyne, “I’ve come for those waters that I asked you to save me so long ago.”

“No way!” Lethe snapped, “Master said specifically not to… hey!” she futily grabbed at her sister’s sleeve as the other girl walked forward, bringing out a bottle of clear liquid.

“I kept it safe for you,” she grinned, “And I like calling you Mother, it makes me feel as if I have my own memories instead of holding everyone else’s.”

“Then remember that it is your sister’s job to ease the sins of the ones that come here,” the woman brushed Mnemosyne’s hair behind her ears, “And let them forget. There are enough that stay behind when your Master goes to collect as it is,” she looked to Lethe, “And now there is just one thing left for me to do before I leave this realm for a while.”

There was a brillant flash of white-light, and the eldest twin shielded her eyes from the glare, blinking when everything turned dark before yelling with fear and anger.

Her Master appeared then, his red eyes flashing with an emotion unusal for him to have as he stepped next to her, “What happened?” he growled.

Lethe’s golden eyes teared up, “It was Mother!” she cried, “She took away Mnemosyne!”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The bright light faded away, and the disheveled girl blinked as she looked around at the greenery that she found herself in, then stepped forward, “Mother kept her promise,” she said happily, “Now to find…”

There was an explosion behind her, and she whirled to see the now battlefield, then squatted down with her head leaning in her hands as she watched, “There, the first memory,” she said sadly, “It’s a ‘bad’ one, but if I can find more ‘good’ than ‘bad’ then I win the bet.”

She was so engrossed with watching the battle that she didn’t notice the person sneaking up behind her until an arm wrapped around her waist, lifting her up and whisking her from the battlefield before she could protest.

Chapter Two

"When I’m sad, she comes to me
with a thousand smiles she gives to me free
It’s alright, she says, it’s alright.
Take anything you want from me, anything.”
- Jimi Hendrix

“But why can’t we go after her?” Lethe demanded of the boy who quietly wrote in his book, “Haven’t you always said that the mortals couldn’t handle the sheer magnitude of the memories that she guards?”

“I refuse to be manipulated by Sister,” he said, “She wants something of mine, that is the only reason for her to take such a drastic measure. Mnemosyne is safe and she’ll return on her own,” he glanced up at the eldest of the twins, “She knows the way.”

Lethe huffed, “You expect for the scatter-brain to just waltz back here?! And what happens if she gives her entire river away before she makes it? You’d think with all those memories that she would be less trusting!”

“That won’t happen,” the quill continued it’s dance on the pages, “Sister has a clear plan, she won’t risk the waters of memories, she sent her to a specific personage, one that would not abuse the waters. Besides, even if someone did manage to drink all of the river, sooner or later they will come to this realm and then you will have them in your power and we will be able to simply retrieve the stolen memories.”

Those words quieted any further protests that she had, and she bowed, swiftly turning to return to her duties.

“I would feel better if you actually believed those words Master,” a voice from the shadows spoke.

Shi continued writing, “I’ve learned a very long time ago to not oppose what Sister does. It is easier to wait on the child to return to us, and she will after a time, bringing with her a good deal of souls that she became attached to along the way. Your duty is simple, follow her, and ensure that no one takes the waters that she carries.”

“And if along the way I run into the Mistress?”

“Remind her that even though she still has not broken the Final Law, that she is not welcome to play with those in my realm,” he paused, “Tread carefully, and see if you can ascertain what it is that she actually wants of me, yet assume that all she tells you is a lie.”

“Understood.” There was a slight change of wind and then only darkness remained to surround the young boy as he tapped his chin with the quill.

“I don’t possess those two souls, so what is she after?”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Excuse me!” Mnemosyne tried to turn to see the one holding her as they traveled quickly through the trees, “I was observing that battle, I really need to get back.”

“All of those memories, and yet you don’t understand how dangerous being here is for you,” her captor said and she smiled at recognizing the voice.

“Did you tell him yet?” she asked, “And I want my own memories so that I can better carry everyone else’s. How can I understand your pain or happiness if I never really experienced it on my own?”

They stopped at a small clearing and the tall dark haired man set her gently down, “I have a feeling that you of all people already understand the pain and happiness of those that toil here, more so than us mortals do,” he said quietly, “Go back to your river and wait to carry our souls little one.”

“This is a ‘good’ one,” she said happily, “Will you stay by my side while I collect more? I’ll get sister to give you some of her waters then,” she met his red eyes with her golden ones, “Since it was my fault that you couldn’t get them before, but you were on the list Mother gave me to make sure that you remembered.”

“And because of that, the world may have very well been saved,” he whispered, then knelt to brush the hair from her eyes, “There is someone that I need to visit before I go, just something that I wanted to see.”

“Is it a ‘good’ one as well?” she said excitedly, then took his hand, “Mother said that there were lots of memories here for me to collect, that most of them wouldn’t make it back home because they were trapped.”

“I have one condition,” he said, “I cannot be seen by anyone. The ones that are here will not understand that I am in control of my own actions, and I will only serve to break the hearts of those I hold dear if they should see me ‘alive.’ I won’t guide you otherwise,” he crossed his arms, “And one more thing, those that belong to your home that are trapped here… I want you to take as many as you can to your sister’s river.”

“There’s another condition that you have, but you won’t dare say it,” she nodded and clapped her hands, “Deal. Now hold still while I make sure no one sees you.”

She closed her eyes and held out her hands then, whispering quiet words as her fingers seemed to play an invisible piano in mid-air, and then the air shifted as a strange warmth came into the clearing.

Her eyes opened, and for a split second it seemed as if they were glowing before she looked at the man… now a crow that flapped his wings before glancing up at her quizzically.

“Yes he was in the other one,” she said sadly, “He couldn’t just leave you behind, so I secretly brought his firefly to you. Mother was the one guiding me back then though, I’ve never been here on my own.” he hopped up to her shoulder, “Is this acceptable?”

He pecked her ear in answer, and she nodded, “Right. Let’s go then.”

After the two disappeared back into the trees a shadow detached itself from the darkness in the forest and formed into an elderly man in black robes, “The situation is more grave than Master thought,” he said to himself as he leaned on his cane, “Already there are no less than four shades following her,” he reached into a pocket, bringing his closed fist to his mouth and whispering a command before opening it and watching the firefly follow after Mnemosyne.

“That will have to do for her protection,” he sighed wearily, “My powers here are more limited than I thought.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I have to be careful,” Mnemosyne whispered as she peered over the crates, staring at the people going back and forth from the medical tents, “That’s too many.”

The crow perched next to her pecked her ear, indicating that she wait there before he flew off, and she chewed her lip as she watched him land on the top of the furthest tent, where he seemed to watch a red-haired medic as she tended to the injured.

“That is a ‘good’ one,” she smiled, leaning her head on her hands, “But it’s another one that really isn’t mine, so I guess I better keep looking.”

There was a sound of fighting behind her, and she slowly turned around, gasping as someone crashed into her, sending her sprawling into the crates.

“Sorry!” the blond who bumped into her exclaimed, holding a hand out, “Lee and I were…” his eyes widened, “Lee! Get Sakura!”

She was shaking, holding onto her arms as tears ran down her face, “They’re painful,” she whimpered, “Why do they always hurt when I get them?”

He went to comfort her, but she shrank back, “Hey kid…”

“Hey, thanks for finding my sister,” a voice said and she and the blond looked to see the dark-haired and eyed boy wearing orange goggles, “Grandfather sent me Jusoku, We’re worried about you back home.”

She shook her head, slowly standing up, “No, I can’t go back yet, not until I can find my own,” she wiped the tears from her face, smiling at him, “You can stay too, wasn’t there someone that…”

“Don’t tempt me,” he whispered, then turned to the blond, keeping his voice pitched low, “It’s her kekkei genki,” he explained, “She sees memories of people that she touches, that’s why she freaked out,” he gently took her arm, “It’s dangerous here, there’s a war.”

“It only hurts for a little bit,” she said, “And then it’s fine.”

“I'm not talking about the memories!” the dark haired boy exclaimed, “I'm talking about…”

“And what’s going on here?”

He froze at the sound of the voice, as the blond explained to the masked silver haired man about the small girl, “We need to leave,” he hissed at her, “Open the gate of shadows.”

“I can’t,” she said, “What are you afraid of?”

“If he sees my face…”

“Too late for that Obito,” he looked up at Kakashi‘s words, “You’re not one of the ones brought back with the Edo Tensei, so what’s really going on?”
