Breeding Information
Breeding:
"You see, when a male and female love each other very, very much, they get the urge to make a big pile of sticks and lay eggs in it..."
Gryphons tend to form bonds that last a lifetime. It is unusual for a gryphon to take on more than one partner, unless his or her partner has died. Of course, flings do happen from time to time, but most would avoid such a situation for fear of gossip and being frowned upon by their Clan-kin. Generally, it is preferred to find a life partner and to rear many, healthy offspring.
Females usually lay eggs in the spring and will not breed again until their current litter reaches adulthood. The entire clan typically rears young gryphons, as it functions as a large family, but the parents are expected to care for and bring up strong, productive members. Mates tend to woo each other through feats of strength and with sky dancing - some prefer elaborate arial displays, while other are particularly fond of bright plumage. Males generally tussle amongst each other to prove their worth to females and much courting amongst the youngsters take place in early spring, just as the snows begin to thaw.
Same-sex pairings do happen and it is not all that uncommon, though they are also expected to take only one mate. Unfortunately, it is biologically impossible for a same-sex pairing to procreate, but they are encouraged to adopt kittens or eggs that do not have parents; orphans that have been brought into the Clan, found lost in the Plains. It is very rare for same-sex couples to find surrogates, if only because most gryphons would want to put their time and energy in bringing their own offspring into the world – not someone else’s. It is not entirely unheard of, though.
