Here, I'll be monitoring the growth of my plants since I upgraded the lights today.

Went from AquaCulter brand Plant Growth Bulbs:

To two these fancy things (GE reveal 60 watt, uses 13 watts):

The new bulbs are considerably brighter, and make the tank look GREAT! The Ram is a little freaked out by how bright they are, so I only left them on for an hour or so, and then turned them off for the night.

So heres the tank as of 10/11/11:

Stock:

-1 Male Ram

Plants:

-Wisteria
-Aponogenton
-Anicharis
-Water Onion
-Crypt Wendtii
-Java Fern
-Lace/Windelov Java Fern
-Dwarf Lily
-Marimo Mass Ball

This'll be to see how the plants do with only lighting. No ferts (excepts fishy poop).

Day two! (10/12/11).

Lights have been on for about 2 hours, and already I'm seeing some improvements. The moss ball is perking up (not that it ever looked bad). Instead of the "hair" laying mostly flat, its standing out and up a little bit. The lily also appears to have grown about an inch. That said, I've had a lily grow 5 inches in just 3 hours, so thats not too surprising. Some of the anicharis that's been dissolving is bringing itself back, too.

The Ram is much more accepting of the brighter lights today. Gave him an algae wafer, and he's chasing it all over the tank, making a big mess (most of it going on to the Moss Ball). These lights really make his blue colors stand out! =D

Fancy! You should get some CO2 going.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 13, 2011 9:48 pm

You're the second person to suggest that XD

I have limited room, and an even more limited budget, so I'm trying to get by with just lighting. If I see that the plants are in need of it, I'll consider it. I'm looking to getting some shrimp (if I could just find any here!) for any algae control I may need.

Day 4 (10/14/11)

I'm leaving tonight for the weekend. So updates, and a pic!

The plants have noticeably grown. Some of the leaves on Crypts are poking up and inch above the rest of the leaves on the plants. Looks silly and lop-sided, but its a good sign lol

User Image

User Image

The Anicharis has grown a good 3 inches, and all the brown has pretty much gone away, excpet the shoot off the larger plant (but the stem is green).

User Image

The Aponogenton is growing a bit. I think it liked the lower lights better. Hopefully it just needs some time to adjust, as the larger one is turning a bit brown. The smaller one (which was actually the first one of the two to sprout), is nice and green, but doesnt seem to be growing any.

User Image

User Image

The Wisteria is well, Wisteria LOL Its loving the new lights, and bending and curving to get the most of it. It was a tube plant, so its had a hard time adjusting to life under water, but it never died off or anything. Its filling out great.

User Image

The Moss Ball is looking shaggy, and getting kind awkward shapped, so its growing. Its collected bits of algae wafer as well, which I'm sure is helping.

User Image

The Lilies leaves were getting thin under the old lights, and occasionally I'd see a leaf floating around the tank. The leaves are thickening back up, and its growing a bit as well, but seems to be mostly focusing on thickening up.

User Image

The Water Onion. Not really sure about it. I guess its do it good. Its got a new leaf shooting up. Its was about 2 inches long yesterday, and its now about 4 inches. But theres two other leaves (that it had when I got it), and they dont really seem to be adjusting to my tank very well. Brown tips on both older leaves. Also theres what appears to be black beard algae in the older leaves (been there for a week or so, so its not from the new lights). Its hard to say its its spreading or not, as I dont really pay much attention to it.

User Image

User Image

And then a random pic of my Lace Java Fern. Its also a tube plant, and seems to be adjusting to underwater life at its own pace. This and the Wisteria were bought a few weeks ago.

User Image

And the Ram. He was jelous that the plants were getting attention and not him XD

User Image

And a full tank shot. I sware, it looks great in person XD

I'm back from my weekend away and I've got some updates!

Day 7 (10/17/11)

I'm not seeing much growth, but most of the plants did grow a tiny bit. In fact, some I'm seeing some dead bits on the new growth of Anicharis. The plant showing some dead spots did grow a little over the two days I was gone, though.

User Image

I planted all the floating plants, and they all are doing great. 2 little pieces of Wisteria and 3 stems of Anicharis. One stem didnt stay planted, though I may just take it out. The leaves are all grey and ragged, but the stem is bright green. Thoughts?

One of the Anicharis was a small little baby, and the other was a rather large piece that is looking good (new growth, dead parts coming back to life).

User Image

User Image

The Lily is looking good. Got a bit taller (less than an inch, I'd say lol). Nice and pink, and theres a big pink root working its way over the drift wood lol The picture is taken from the back corner of the tank, where I can never get in to to see back there. Looks like I got some algae going on on the little guy. The color is drowned out of the Lily in this pic, but the Algae's color sure isnt XD

User Image

The bigger Aponogenton is perking up. A nice bright green leaf has nestled itself in the Wisteria. The older leaves are still brown, but they have grown a little bit, too.

User Image

The older (yet still smaller...) Aponogenton has grown about twice as tall since friday!

User Image

The Onion seems to be doing good. Still has algae on it, and its gotten worse. The new leaf is taller than the smaller of the older leaves.

User Image

Then theres the Moss Ball. It really seems to be doing good. Looks like I'm gunna have to rotate it a bit, as its got some sort of awkward tumor sort of part of the moss thats growing faster then the rest of it lol

I also seem to be getting some type of Algae. Diatoms, perhaps? But it seems too red....

Ok, update time! Day 10 (10/20/11).

I'll start with this picture smile This is my haul today! $32 later, and I only have 4 things XD

Close up of the plant:

And Thought I'd share this one too. This is on the back of the plant package:

User Image

Ok, serious talk now! Since I got the new plants (broke it up into 4 smaller plants), I had to do a little rearranging. The smaller Aponogenton got moved to the back of the tank, and I moved over one of the crypts to make room. Planted two of the new guys in front of the larger driftwood, on to the right of the smaller driftwood, and one behind the smaller driftwood.

Also added 5 Flourish Root Tabs to the tank. 2 on the left, 3 on the right (the side with the Lily).

I'm seeing lots of new growth in some of the crypts. Lots of new baby leaves, near the gravel. There are also a lot of baby plants on the Lace Java Fern.

I caught some baby Least Killifish today, and I have added them to the tank, in the breeders net. They have been acclimating since 11:30 this morning, and they have just been added to the tank, at about 6:40.

Update, Day 11 (10/21/11).

No change other than the Wisteria growing a noticeable amount over night.

Day 14: 10/24/11

The Wistera and new plants (I forget what they're called already >.<), are growing crazy! As are the diatoms >.<

After the rearrangement, the onion plant managed to unplant itself, so I need to put it back where it goes.
