Chapter 2
_____“. . . ake up. . . . Al, . . . up.” I sleepily opened my eyes and saw Daniel sitting on the edge of my bed.
_____“Dan. . . ? What time is it?” I mumbled.
_____“It’s nine o’clock. Your interview with Mr. Mizuki begins at ten. You’ll need time to eat and get ready, and Sam said that getting there early would leave a good impression.”
_____“Thanks.” He got up and I stumbled out of bed, and we made our way downstairs. Edward was making breakfast, scrambled eggs. He’s really good at cooking. Samuel was sitting at the table reading a book, as usual, and Philip and Bobby were talking about music. Vivi came running toward me as soon as I reached the bottom of the steps.
_____“Good morning, Sister Al!” he said in his bright, cheery voice. I smiled, hugged him, and said,
_____“Good morning to you too, Vi.” Edward said to me without looking up from the scrambled eggs,
_____“You need to eat good this morning for your interview, so I made extra scrambled eggs.” Bobby broke off his music conversation with Phillip to ask,
_____“Where’s your interview, again?” I opened my mouth to answer, but Samuel interjected before I could.
_____“At the grocery store. You know, the one we live near?” he turned away from Bobby and looked at me. “Do you really think the wages you earn there can support all seven of us?” I sat down and replied,
_____“Mr. Mizuki said he’d give us food.” Edward brought the scrambled eggs to the table and said,
_____“Well that was nice of him. Wonder why he said that?” Everyone started to load scrambled eggs onto their plates as I said,
_____“It was probably because of his wife. She’s really sweet and caring. I think she really likes me.”
_____“She’d have to if she wants to feed seven people to free,” Philip said. Edward piled scrambled eggs onto my plate and said, “Eat,” and walked upstairs. Vivi shouted after him,
_____“Aren’t you going to eat?” but the only answer he received was silence.
_____I arrived back home after what I thought was a successful interview. I could tell something was wrong. Vivi wasn’t running toward me like he always did when I come home. I quickly walked into the kitchen. Everyone was sitting quietly at the table. Everyone, that is, except for Daniel and Edward.
_____“Where’s Daniel and Edward?” I asked as soon as I noticed that they weren’t there. Vivi answered me in a shaky voice.
_____“Ed’s shut himself up in his room and Dan’s trying to get him to come out.” I ran upstairs and saw Daniel pleading with a closed door.
