The raven and the crow

Long ago there were two rivals; Raven and Crow. They were opposite in everything; Raven liked to play while crow liked to work. Raven loved sunny days while crow loved cloudy weather. Raven liked to sing, Crow liked to scream. There was only one thing that the two had in common, and that was Dove. Neither of them understood why Dove cared for the humans in the valley, but she would always go to them to sing to them, and they would always look to her fondly. Not Raven nor Crow liked the humans, and the humans didn't like them.

One day, there were a lot of clouds in the sky, and Dove asked Crow, 'Will you go with me to sing to the humans? I do not want to go alone for the weather is frightening.'

Crow had the power to sense danger, and most keenly death. He asked Dove not to go, but she wouldn't listen. She told Crow, 'It is when the weather is gloomy that they need my song the most.' Angry, Dove flew into the storm while Crow waited impatiently for her return.

While flying, Dove saw Raven, and asked if he would go. He asked why Crow didn't go with her, and when she said that he wouldn't because he sensed danger, Raven begged her not to go. Upset that none of her friends understood her devotion to the people who needed her, she flew off and the Raven waited impatiently for her return.

Two days passed, and Raven and Crow went to the humans to search for her. Raven found her at the chapel windowsill, where she loved to do her singing the most. However, Raven had the ability to see the dead, and knew that Dove was no longer really there. 'Dove, I blame myself,' he said, 'If only I had gone with you, I could have taken your place.'

'No,' Dove replied, 'I am happy here, in a place of peace and everlasting song. I made it to the land of paradise, and stay only because I am worried for my friends and the people who care about me. Raven, if you could please do one thing for me.'

'Anything,' Raven replied, tears falling down his face.

'Since I can no longer be here, just let those I care about know that I am alright, and that they no longer have to fear or cry for me.'

Though Raven didn't like the people, he agreed, and with a heavy heart met with Crow and told him what she said.

'Dove loved the people,' Crow said, and after a moment of silence, he said, 'I will do something for her as well. I will warn the people that a trip to death will strike their loved ones, as far as their heart reaches. That way, they will know when to say what they need to say, in case death does come to the ones they love, and they no longer have to regret their choices like I do with Dove.'

'If you will do that,' Raven replied, Then I will give them peace of mind when I come to them so that they know that the ones they loved passed safely to where Dove sings their songs and peace is achieved.'

Raven went to the people, and he gave them the message that Dove passed the trial of death safely and they were relieved, able to pas on with their lives and look back on memories of Dove fondly and without regret.

To this day the children of Crow warns people from danger and even death, and the children of Raven come as a messenger to the people to ensure them their loved ones passed through the land of death safely.

The Crow warns off danger
The Raven brings word
The Dove leads the lost
To a much better world

The Mosquito Queen

As the legend is told, there is a spirit of the forest that feeds on the blood of man, as man is the threat of the forest. The spirit is a gruesome thing with gray hair and black eyes, and she smiles to her enemies with a permanent grin. She used to sleep in the largest and tallest tree of the forest. A man named (Dense one) traveled to the forest seeking shelter. He came across (Woman who sweats blood)’s tree and said, ‘My, what a wonderful tree! It will surely keep me sheltered and warm for many years!’ (Dense One) Takes out his axe and chops the tree once. A voice spirit called out to him, ‘Dear child of (Human), do not swing your axe here.’ (Dense one), astonished by the voice of a spirit, replied to her, ‘But this is surely a magnificent tree that will last many years as fire and shelter from the rain. It will ease my life and please my fellow villagers.’

‘This area of the forest is my home,’ the spirit sighed, ‘You cannot take this tree or those around it.’ (Deanse one), angry for being denied the glorious tree, began chopping it once more. ‘Cease and listen to the spirit of the forest!’ The spirit implored, but the man continued to chop. The spirit tried to convince (Dense one) to leave her home be, but he would not listen even as it grew dark. The spirit’s voice became softer the more the tree was through. When (Dense one) had almost finished, he stopped for a small break.

‘Why?’ the spirit cried, ‘Why do you not listen to me?’

‘I have no need to listen to you,’ (Dense one) says, ‘The time is passing. We are more adult, and many men have lost the desire to listen to spirits anymore. You have nothing to say to interest me. The village is growing and we need more shelter and wood.’

‘Allow trees to grow and they will give you shelter. Gather the branches they offer to you and you will have your fire. I beg you one more time; leave this tree as my home and I will return the favor of my gratitude.’

(Dense one) who cared not for other creatures picked up his axe. Her pleas and cries angered (Dense one) and so he stood and proclaimed, ‘As long as there is blood in my veins, I will always do what I please!’ With one last mighty chop, the tree fell to the ground and moved the earth. The spirit’s voice wailed in anger and torment as the wind blew around (Dense one).

In the dim light, (Dense one) saw the figure of the spirit. She hunched over in agony, revealing a dreadful face and smiling a dreadful smile. (Dense one) Decided to run and arrive with other men to bring back the tree in the morning. The spirit was quick and tried to grab him with her unfortunate hand. Unsuccessful in his capture, (Dense One) went home and told the villagers the story of how he bested a forest spirit. The following dawn some men from the village went to take the tree from the now silent forest. The tree was cut down to make firewood and prepare for shelter. As the tree was being cut down, (Dense One) noticed many odd insects in the wood.

That night, (Dense one) and his son sat alone in the comfort of a fire made by the wood of the tree. The strange insects joined them. ‘Father,’ the young son asked, ‘What do you suppose these things are?’ He raised his hand to show his father one of the insects. His father replied, ‘I do not know, but I don’t think I like them much.’

As he spoke these words, many of them came to flight. Every insect swarmed to (Dense One) and covered his body. He screamed, trying to shake and swat them all away. His son stood in fear. Behind his father was the spirit, but she was bleeding from her entire body. Each drop of blood made a new insect that swarmed (Dense One). This was the last thing the boy saw before his vision turned red and then black. He no longer heard his father’s screams.

The villagers found the boy and his father (Dense one) in the grass. The son explained what he saw though he could no longer see. The villagers told the boy that they heard no cries from him or his father, every scrap of wood from the tree had gone missing, and his father was dry of blood.
The spirit never spoke another word. Since she had learned no human listens to spirits anymore, she keeps her mouth shut. It is sure that if (Woman who sweats blood) needs more blood, she will come again and take the men who do not believe in her and feed on them for taking whatever they wish and not heeding the words of the forest spirits.

Blood seeps from her pores
A mosquito is made
Her deformed body proves
There is cause to be afraid.
Your eyes will bleed
At the sight that cannot be unseen
One drop makes you slave to
The Mosquito Queen.
