I spent 2 years trying to learn Japanese, and 2 trying to learn French, and can't form a sentence in either...just a few weeks of Chinese and I'm doing pretty well. I'm also an anthropology major, and learning languages in general is kind of important, so this helps. China in general has never really interested me until I started learning Chinese, actually. I'm starting to fall in love with it, but that wasn't why I started...so...uhm...Iunno?
