The city is filled with as many excuses as the people that fill it. As any regular person walks the streets they hear these excuses, over and over. "I can't, I am busy." one says as another claims to be ill. It is a rush of people trying to make their lives easier by not making others the same. This is what humanity is, and always has been. One cannot find a human who doesn’t think of only themselves. In a brief moment, one may have a thought or slight action that could benefit another, however, it is something so small that it could not be counted. In the event that this does happen, it is something that would never completely inconvenience the one committing the act, and they do it because they expect something in return. Human invade the entire world in all of its far reaches with their selfishness. Animals are hunted for sport and some are almost extinct because of their actions. They take the trees of the land, pollute the air with oil, all for themselves. Humans reach everywhere, however, in this city, it seems the worst. This city has more crime than any in the world. In this city you can find no trees. In this city you can find no animals other than those treated as common pets. In this city no human does a favor for another and all keep to themselves other than small families. This is where the corruption is viewed as the worst by the spirits, so this is where they released their monster.

Life is something to be cherished. It is something grand, something meaningful, and something that can only be experienced once. That is, unless the spirits deem it so. Even humans know of the preciousness of life, they die everyday. Humans feel bad for those that leave this realm. However, this is not because they feel bad for the person, or the family. Deep down, humans only are sad when others die because they know that they will suffer the same fate some day. They know that their time is limited and they fear the afterlife because of their constant selfishness that leaves a blot on their soul. The spirits know this, and this is why they have sent the demon to their door. This is why the Inflictor has come, straight from the nightmares of its first victim, Atam Unera.

Atam Unera

My name is Atam and I am a magician, not those cheap, birthday party magicians, the Las Vegas, professional or at least I should be. I am Male, 19, and I guess you could say I'm Native American. Recently my job has been very stressful because not many people want to hire a big time magician, you have to be well known and appreciated to get work.... Sadly I am neither appreciated nor well known...Times are hard and I am running out of money. I have always loved weird creatures, though I do not remember why. I have a stuffed animal of it that looks like This. I do not know why, but I always have it with me. It tends to calm me down, and make me feel at ease, especially after the attack. When I was young my family ignored me, they were afraid that i would end up like my brother, afraid I would go bad, so they didn't bother raising me at all. I don't even know much about my brother all I know is that he stole my family from me. The attacker is called the Inflictor, but I didn't hear that from him. All I remember is that he looked about 24 years old, he used a long wicked looking dagger and he wore shackles around his neck. Since he attacked me he has mainly be aiming for people who have unique skills, along with some that have connections to me. I do not want to remember what happened on that dark saturday evening.

It's been a while since I was attacked by him. I'v been staying in a cheap hotel, trying to save as much money as I could, making meals last as long as I can each day, knowing it could be my last.

I woke up in the hospital, they told me I was lucky I was even alive, I stayed a while there, recovering my strength and my mind, but the one thing I knew was that i wouldn't be able to pay off the huge doctor bills that would be sent to my P.O. box, plunging me deeper into debt.

I did get a few gigs, but most of them ended in failure because of my growing paranoia. Every time I tried to concentrate on my work, my mind ended up wandering to that day...And now, every time I hear a noise I jump, expecting a dagger at my throat, the jangle of that chain clinking against the shackle around his neck.

I stand on this street corner, performing basic tricks in a silent and more upper class part of the city, hopefully today will give me a better profit than others, my supply of money dwindling to nothing, all I have left is a $20 bill in my pocket and $100 in my bank....I still am able to pull off a good show, dazzling what little audience I have.

I was able to keep my suit clean these past few days, dressed as a proper magician.

"Come one and all, come see the magics that many take for granted, come see the wonders that human eyes are forbidden to look upon, come see the Magnificent, Amazing, Atam!" My voice was clear and energetic, despite my growing depression.

I did a couple quick easy tricks then bowed to the crowd. "Next I need an assistant, would anyone be kind enough to step up?" I smiled, my cape flowing like a river behind me. A woman stepped forward, dressed in a nice dress, smiling with a comforting warmth.

Maybe it won't go so bad this time.
I thought to myself. I took her hand, and politely asked her

"And what is m'ladys name, may I ask?" She was very shy now as I held her hand.

"Mina..."

"Well Mina, if you could, stand right here and hold your hands out at your side" I lead her to a spot and lifted her arms to her sides.

"Now ladies and gentleman, prepare to be baffled, as I make this beautiful lady, dissapear." There were a couple people who scoffed, unbelieving, but i would show them...I took my cape from my back and covered the lady with it, leaning close to her and whispering into her ear.

"Don't be afraid, you will be safe..."I quickly removed the cloth and she was gone. Gasps could be heard from the small crowd and then cheering. I smiled and bowed, it went perfectly! So i waved my cape over the spot where the lady was and she reappeared unharmed. Of course I wont tell you what happened, a magician never reveals his secrets~

Leo, the Detective

I watch Atam from a distance as he tries to make ends meet. His magic tricks are getting as old as the lies he spouts from his mouth. I do not believe anything he told me or the other officers and I was going to prove him to be false. I order a coffee from a vender and sit with my book, seeming to be reading as I watch the man that I am investigating. I am actually looking at a blank page of my journal, writing small notes and flipping to my previous ones. There was plenty that could make this guy want to fake being attacked. The economy was slow, which meant that not many had enough money to hire a high class magician such as him. This meant that he would be low on money, and was probably stressed trying to find even the smallest amount of work. Being attacked would give him a few days reprieve. Most of all, was the attention he would receive because of the attack. With the press all over him it is only natural that he would get more cliental despite his prices. There were plenty of reasons for this man to lie, however, I was still being forced to look into it further after the attacks continued after him. After all, not everyone could tell the same lie, right? Wrong. I believe that the idea of a criminal called “The Inflictor” running around beating people up for no reason is utter bullshit. It is a lie that started with him, and caused so much unrest that people are blaming things on this farce. I see my target make a woman disappear and reappear, the crowd claps, he bows slightly, smiling his slight smile at the success. I jot a note down of how many people stop and take a second look at him, obviously recognizing from the news. I also notice how they stay and watch for a bit after recognizing him and giving him more money than the rest. Some even seem to be waiting to speak with him after he is done. I look over my previous notes, looking at each suspect carefully. Three others have been attacked since the first, none relate to Atam. But there has to be a relation, I know that there is.

I go to take my first sip of coffee and realize that it is cold, I have been sitting here for a long while. I toss it in the bin by where I am sitting and close up my book. There was no point in buying another. I take out a pack of cigarettes and light one, taking a few drags off as I prepare to go have another little chat with our first victim. He is still performing and has not seem to notice me. As it gets darker outside and he begins to pack up, some people begin to swarm him and ask him of his injuries. That is when I approach. “Atam.” I say simply and hold out my badge. “I am Leo. A detective. Your case has been reopened and I need to ask you a few things.” I put my badge away, waiting for him to be finished packing up.

. . . the truth for the world to see.

A detective...?

"A-alright....just let me finish packing up, I won't be long..."

My case re-opened? I told them everything I could the first time they questioned me while I was still in the hospital. What more could they want to know?

I continued to pack up, more quickly now, the excitement of performing was dulled by now, just a soft buzz of adrenaline in the back of my skull at this new stress put upon me. I pack up the last part of my stuff in my case and close it, standing up straight I turn and smile politely to the detective.

"So...what would you like to know?"
