Have you ever learned something really random or cool or strange that you just HAD to share with someone? Share it with the guild! I like to bring back random history facts to my roommate, but why should she be the only one I tell?
Post your facts here in this thread. They can be about anything, so long as they follow the rules and the ToS. To keep this kind of book-ish, let's have all the posts in Document style (from the dropdown "Post Style" at the bottom of the text box). Every fact should have its own post, unless you have two that are directly related to each other. Let's see what random things we all learn every day! whee

"Fish" and "poison" are one S away in French.
poisson = fish poison = poison
It's easy to tell in writing, but you have to be careful with pronunciation. Two S's has a normal S sound, while a single S in this case sounds more like a Z. There is a similar pronunciation and spelling difference between the terms for "to make out" and "to have sex". Gotta be careful with those foreign languages, and don't even get me started on regional slang!

Speaking of French, if you type http://www.google.cm instead of http://www.google.com, Google will appear in French instead of English. :3

() ◕ ᵜ ◕ () ϡ Harald I of Denmark united many of the warring tribes of Denmark and Norway into a single kingdom. His nickname was "Bluetooth". If we connect the dots, then we realize that Bluetooth technology is named after a Viking. Why? Because Bluetooth technology unites various communication mediums, just as Harald I united many warring tribes. The symbol used by Bluetooth technology is also derived from the runes that made up Harald's initials.

“If you go into space unprotected you will either freeze or explode”
Both are wrong. If in space without a spacesuit you will likely suffer ebullism (in short, boiling of body liquids due to the change in pressure) before asphyxiating. You’d likely lose consciousness after about 10-20 seconds, and contrary to instinct, you’d want to exhale as quickly as possible.
Spacesuits are designed to protect the astronauts from ultraviolet rays, and provide pressure and breathable air.
The whole exploding / freezing thing is Hollywood nonsense. Few movies have ever gotten it right.

I'm sure this is old news but...
Did you know, barbers' poles have red on them because they used to also do "bleeding", a practice in which one would drain out some of their blood. In the time which this happened, it was thought that sickness was carried in the blood, and that draining it away would help one get better faster.
Oh, and for a visual of what they used to cut people: Click!

So quiet here. More randomness required.
Did you know that rats regulate temperature with their tails?
