Personality: Naoto worries about his future and is afraid he won't be able to succeed, as he believes there is no other meaning in life than to succeed. While he may be a hard worker to keep himself from looking bad in front of his superiors, he often is lazy and very relaxed, although he tries not to disrespect people too much. Naoto is best described as being moody and sensitive, as he cares about how people look at him and he is happy or sad based on how he perceives other people perceive him.
Personal Skill: Naoto is good at using logic to think situations clearly, although he rarely uses this skill. He is also good at cooking ramen noodles, though unfortunately, this is the limit of his cooking skills. He plays the piano quite well.
Favorite Food: Generally anything that does not have too much of a strong taste. Naoto enjoys ramen noodles, sushi, and dumplings the most.

He initially does not communicate much with Naoto due to mutual shyness and fear. Makatsu is loyal enough to help out when Naoto is in trouble.

Appearance: Naoto wears an ancient Chinese-styled spiked combat helmet with two protruding horns like those of a goat. He also is dressed with a red cloak hanging from around his neck. Pieces of plate armor are on his knees and shins. The sword is larger and of golden color, with a basket-shaped hilt covered in a red cloth. Its double-edged blade is narrow and acute.

Background History:
• Naoto Yagura was born in District 3, Hokutan of West Rukongai. As a young baby he was given to a middle-aged couple to be cared for. Like most spirits, he has no recollection of his previous life as a human, though he remembers occasional memories from his human life when he dreams. Learning about his human past was once of the reasons for joining the shinigami; he was convinced that he had a quest to learn more about himself.
Throughout the years, Naoto would grow up in Hokutan, gaining many friends. Although somewhat shy, Naoto was good with words when he was in a good mood and was competitive if not good in sports. Beginning at a young age, he began learning hand-to-hand combat and swordsmanship as a method of exercise, though he never developed a taste for it and thus he never became very good at martial arts until he became a shinigami.
One day, he and his friends bumped into a group of gangsters from a neighboring town and were surrounded. None of them had money, though this did not prevent them from beating them up. Angered by this, Naoto went on a rage and nearly beat the gangster leader to death. As the gangsters fled, Naoto became aware of his abilities and felt both pride and shame in himself.
To further develop these abilities, he began participating more in sports and eventually became one of the best. Some of his former friends, however, began treating him differently due to his strange abilities. Naoto was cast into doubt and fear, swearing he would never use his abilities again.
However, when Soul Society distributed flyers and began looking for potential shinigami, Naoto signed up for the Shinigami Academy in order to better himself and understand himself a bit more. He passed the courses with flying colors and was accepted in the 8th Division as a low-ranking seated officer.
However, his uncle became very ill and Naoto resigned to spend time with him before his death. After several years, however, his uncle miraculously recovered and Naoto was permitted to rejoin the shinigami. During his long hiatus, he managed to achieve bankai. Upon returning to Seireitei and applying for an officer rank, Naoto was surprisingly assigned to the 8th Division as its new Vice-Captain.
