Loosely based on Robert van Gulik character Judge Dee, "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame" is loosely historcial movie base in Tang Dynasty during the reign of The Dragon Emperess Wu. This was a terriffic movie. Andy Lau played a great job as the title role. I liked how Tsui Hark mixed action kong fu and a murder mystery together without one dominate the other. They were seperate but in fact together. The action part blew my mind. The cinematography was beauitful and well done. The mystery part was well played , with many twist and turns, the will make sense to you when the movies done. The bad guy in the end and his mission is what aslo makes the movie good. Aslo the ending and how the murders were carried out....is puts a spin that is a vampire liek without the vampires.
Though a word of warning: Don't miss anything, because this is subtitle and sometimes go fastand you will miss key events and the ending won't mak any sense.
So if you like asian moives, this is one for you!
I give it 8/10!~
