So, I've officially started reading to my now two year old every single night, rather than when I have the time. We've been doing this for the past week, and already he has learned SOOO many new words. It's much more efficient then the when I have the spare moment theory. First off, it's right before they go to bed, so whatever you read them is the last thing that's in there mind before they fall asleep, therefor they spend a lot more time thinking about it, and it sticks better. I never thought this tactic would work so well until I tried it. Within a week his vocabulary has grown to an insane amount, and the communication has improved by nearly 100%, all because of the time of day when we read to him.

It helps that you're now doing it consistantly. "Spare moment" reading means you might not do it everyday, and when you do do it the amount of time you spend may vary greatly.
My 2nd and 3rd grade teachers had "reading time" where they would take books that were at our supposed reading levels and read outloud to us (In 4th grade, and this really impressed me, we got copies of the books to follow along in) with the hope that it would make up for the fact that a lot of us weren't being encouraged to read at home.
I dunno how it worked out for my classmates but I was introduced to a lot of new genres that I wouldn't have otherwise bothered with that way.
When I have children of my own (Someday!) I fully intend to read every night to them. Even when they're old enough to read all by themselves.

I highly agree. Right now, they give my six year old a book to read at home every night (not including the one we read at bedtime.) He always does it, and he reads it well, the problem is, they let him pick any book he wants. Therefor he picks books that are WAY below his reading level because he doesn't want to read when it's called "homework."
