Hi, I'm new to witchcraft, and I don't really know any dieties or any of that stuff. Can someone explain it to me?

Also, the book I'm reading says something about adding 'pertinent sigils' to a pentagram. What are these sigils?

If you don't know any sigils you shouldn't mess about with them.

Not all witches are theists. What got you interested in gods?

I just want to learn about the sigils and the dieties used in Witchcraft.

Deities are worshipped, not "used". And there are no deities in witchcraft, as such.

Sigils will take a long time to learn and are more Ceremonial Magic than witchcraft. You'd need to pick up books by Paracelsus and so on.

Religious witchcraft traditions (for example, Wicca) have specific Deities that they worship/honour/work with. That's the religious bit. Other kinds of witchcraft will have different Deities, or no Deities at all. Witchcraft, or magic, as such, is really a skill set, separate from any kind of religion, although as noted, some religions may have a witchy, or magical component. So, asking what the Deities of witchcraft are...doesn't make any sense because there isn't one God, or one set of Gods honoured by all witches, or magicians, nor is there one God, or one set of Gods that one has to honour in order to be a witch.

Different magical paths use different sorts of sigils for different things. Like, ceremonial magicians may use sigils to summon demons and other supernatural creatures. And some forms of Chaos Magic use sigils in their magic, though not to summon things, I don't believe. I'm sure there are probably some witches that find sigil work useful, and so utilise sigils in their practice. Annnd, unfortunately, I know hardly anything about sigils, or how to use them, but maybe if you look up Chaos Magic or Ceremonial Magic you'll be able to find something useful.

Though honestly, if this book is telling you to draw sigils without telling you anything about sigils or which ones to draw, I'm thinking it's not doing a very good teaching job. You might want to look at other books on witchcraft/magic.

What makes you think witchcraft involves deities at all?

@Katefox: Thank you for the explanation. It was really helpful.

@Ren: Just all the threads in this guild about them. I was curious about what Dieties had to do with Witchcraft, plus my book mentions the God and Goddess so I want to learn more about it. After all, To me, knowledge equals growth and inner expansion, therefore a new level of self-knowledge.

EDIT: Plus these three names of goddesses have always interested me on a "I want to know you" level, not just "find out who you are" kind of level:

Brighid
Nyx
Gaia

In order I've found and became drawn to so I wanted to know why dieties are apart of witchcraft and how so.

Most threads that you'll see in a setting like this that talk about deities are talking referring to them through a a pagan perspective. But not all pagans practice witchcraft, neither are all witches pagan.

A witch who is pagan my choose to incorporate his or her religion into their practice (or incorporate their practice into their religion) but witchcraft in and of itself does not need the intervention of a god or goddess. Witchcraft is a craft, nothing more or less. Its no different from masonry or quilting.

The books you mentioned that talk about a God and a Goddess are most likely soft-polytheistic neo-pagan books. Lots of books on neo-paganism like to also teach witchcraft along side the religion, oftentimes because the practice of witchcraft that they are teaching is an integral part of the worship that they are teaching.

As for the three specific goddesses that you mentioned, Brighid comes from the British Isles (I want to say she's Celtic or Saxon but I really don't know, so don't quote me on that), Nyx is Greek and she is the goddess of darkness (and night?) and Gaia is an earth/mother goddess I think also Greek (or Roman, they're practically the same thing).

As LehCrow said, deities aren't a part of witchcraft. Some people who are religious witches incorporate worship into their craft or craft into their worship, but a lot of witches are not theists.

But, here are some good pages on Nyx and Gaia.

sigils are drawings that you fill with a certain intention. like a sigil(drawing) shaped like an O or S or a triangle that you fill with a certain job. for a example a sigil to calm or a sigil to protect.

dieties are goddeses that you simply call upon(usually you make a certain diety drawing and put it on your altar) then call them to come forth in a peacefull manner to your magick circle to join yopu and help you. certain dietys are supposed to hold different magickal aspects and they can help you in your magick.

Before you use sigils, or call on a Deity, make sure you research all of the aspects. Remember the three fold law and follow your instincts. If you feel Iffy or uncomfortable in a situation, don't continue.

Some Deity's can do more harm than good so make sure you are careful who you summon and for what reason. Knowing about some protective spells and good circle making is also important. It is generally easy to find these things online but if you like, PM me and I can send you some spells.

Brighid is a Celtic goddess - patron of poets and musicians, healers and magicians. On an interesting note, St.Brigid of Kildare is something of a Christianization of the celtic goddess who had a sanctuary in Kildare, which is also one of the places in Ireland with a well that is considered sacred. I believe people in Kildare are still tying ribbons and such to trees near that well as offerings to Brighid.
