Abstract
Janlu Darb’ur began her journey, a changeling on a jungle planet. As far back as she can remember, she was always an outcast. Her own people shunned her for reasons beyond Janlu’s comprehension. It was unknown to her how long she survived like this until they arrived…the outworlders… She took the form of a small child, human as they were. Sensing her strong connection to the force, they took her with them to be trained as a Jedi. For years she trained, but her training lasted longer than most…decades. Janlu had trouble connecting with her emotions, which made it difficult searching her feelings in connection with the force. In an effort to reach her on an emotional level, her master at the time decided to push her. Noticing her tendency to distance others, he attempted to use that to provoke her…until he pushed her too far. Janlu’s self preservation ran on full that day. In her fear, she managed a burst of force lightning (to her own surprise), in self-defense. For this, she was outcast once again. Her former master abandoned her on a bench in the middle of nowhere, in the streets of Coruscant. There, she waited until something unexpected occurred. Help arrived…she was smuggled off the city planet and taken in by a group of other outcasts. She finally belonged somewhere. With the Outcasts, she trained and helped them with secret missions across the galaxy, hoping one day to make a difference.

On the planet of Lao-mon, one small Shi'ido village was under a barrage of attacks by Sith looking for more to join their forces. One family of four, parents and twin children, had a difficult position in the matter. The daughter grew up alienated from everyone else in the town. She didn’t know why anyone who bothered to talk to her only stabbed her in the back later on. The only people she could rely on were her parents and her twin brother(1). Even still, there were whispers about the mother and no one would associate with them. The situation became strained and the Darb’ur family was avoided because of these rumors. The girl couldn’t understand and didn’t want to believe that it could be related, but one raid hit too close to home. The family fled into the plant life, away from battle and away from harm, or so they thought. Led by the mother, they were ambushed, the mother revealing that she had brought the Sith to them and attempting to bring her family to join. The father fought back, giving the twins a chance to escape, but before they got far, they watched as their mother had slain their father in cold blood.

They would later learn that the father's sacrifice was met with reluctance by his attacker and wife. The woman was faced with a choice to show her loyalty by betraying her family. She made the decision with her husband to kill him in order to allow the children to escape, while also showing loyalty. This reasoning would be lost along with her life as she signed it away to Sith service, awaiting the day her children find her to remind her of her heart's existence and why she committed the dark deed.
...Done...
Taking her brother by the hand, the girl ran into the vegetation to escape the clutches of their "decidedly evil" mother and the Sith. In their anxiety, the girl tripped on small log, watching her brother disappear into the foliage. Sensing her assailants approaching, she decided to take another route and the changeling girl blended in with the plants. There she stayed, in hiding, losing all track of time. She lived off whatever she could find for a couple of decades in seclusion until, one day, a small family of explorers took up residence in a nearby clearing, closely accompanied by Jedi. They were far enough away not to notice the changeling in hiding, except for the couple’s little girl. The lost changeling was relived to have the company. When the three year old human scouted the area with great interest she sparked the changeling’s own curiosity.
After about a week, the changeling decided to show herself and interact with the little girl, copying her form except for the hair, which held a purplish hue. Taking the changeling’s hand, the little human girl quickly named her Janlu, or so it sounded as she cried out in surprise. It may have been gibberish, but the changeling enjoyed it, having forgotten her own first name. As she made that physical contact, the changeling could sense the girl’s consciousness and grew a close connection with her. This new friendship would not last long, however, as one predator emerged swallowing the little girl whole before Janlu’s eyes. She ran to the girl’s parents, terror in her eyes, trying to warn them without words, but the beast had followed her and soon attacked the two explorers. The Jedi nearby leapt into action, scaring off the hungry creature, but they were too late. The child swallowed and parents lying on the ground with deadly wounds, Janlu was all that was left. When asked her full name, she gave Janlu Darb’ur, in memory of the little girl, but not forgetting her family. Without questions, the Jedi seemed to believe she was the daughter and, sensing her connection with the force, took her with them to be trained.
As the years passed, Janlu imitated the growth of her peers, keeping her human appearance. After a few more decades, she stopped signs of aging, appearing to be somewhere in her 20s, had she been human, despite that she had many more years behind her. Through all her training, she listened well and imitated everything, not stopping until she reached perfection, but it was not enough. Though her combat skills were notable, she was always disconnected from her emotions, her past having numbed her from doing so, which hindered some of her progress in the Force. She kept her distance from people, not wanting physical contact as she knew it would bring a closer connection and Janlu was afraid to care. For this, her master (Ogrun) chose to hold her back, not allowing her to progress in order to spark some emotion from her, but Janlu accepted it without question. He held high demands and gave Janlu ridiculous goals, but still she did not get upset. Finally, her master took another approach; it was unclear to her why he was trying so hard to upset her, but she knew his highly unconventional methods would become more questionable. She tried to keep him at a distance, realizing he continually got too close.
It was clear to Janlu that he was attempting some physical contact, knowing full well it would bother her. The day he became even bolder, Janlu took to her saber in defense, but her master seemed to enjoy that she did. It was as if he wanted to fight and this was just the excuse he needed. His attacks were relentless, but Janlu did nothing to attack him in return. Confusion fell upon her as she defended each of his strikes. She wanted to know why, but it was clear she wouldn’t get her answer. Sure enough, her emotions had been building, more for self-preservation now as she fought for survival. One moment of weakness allowed the master to disarm her, but his attack did not stop. With the fear of being stuck, Janlu let out a burst of force lightning, its full blast absorbed by her master’s saber, but enough to shock him in astonishment. As he ran out the door, Janlu headed in the direction of Master Yoda, the one person she knew could explain it to her. On the way, she wondered what her master had run off to do in the meantime. The smug look on his face before he had left, worried her. Janlu managed to get some understanding from Yoda, but her old master had apparently told everyone else what had happened.
They arrived to the room where she was, waiting outside the door, but even more confusing to Janlu was why everyone seemed so strangely calm. They didn’t enter, instead Janlu’s master came with a command to follow his. She thought it best to go along with it and they took to a speeder. Her master flew her out of the Jadi temple and closer to the planet’s surface telling her to stay there until he returned. She knew he wouldn’t come back for her, but without knowing what was happening or what she should do, Janlu sat on a nearby bench and waited. To her surprise, she didn’t have to wait long before someone did come. Though she was absorbed in thought, she caught clear sight of the man approaching her. Though he had a very Sith appearance and cautious walk, the fact his weapon was holstered and his demeanor cordial Janlu had the clear impression he wasn’t there to fight. However, just as he neared, so did one of her peers, who had reached Janlu just a moment before the unknown newcomer. She turned to him, with a look of concern, knowing it wouldn’t be long before one of them attacked the other.
It was then a small bit of information was brought to light as Janlu’s colleague explained she had to be taken back. She could only imagine what her old master had said that now it was clear they wanted to strip her of the Force, a fate worse than death, but this unknown person dressed as a Sith had come just in time. The though amused her, but she didn’t ask questions; she had rather conclude the absence of malice in the man’s intentions. The result couldn’t possibly be any worse that her current fate. However, as the Jedi saw him he threatened if the man neared. Janlu stood up and stepped in, pointing out that he didn’t seem to mean any harm, but the Jedi refused to listen and reminded her that she had to be taken back to the temple. Before he could make a move, she grasped at his mind. Learning of another newfound strength, Janlu commanded the Jedi to his knees, leaving him with a headache and no more intention to carry out what he had come to do.
At that point she went with her new acquaintance she later learned called himself Darth Malice(2). A name that Janlu felt didn’t quite fit considering what had happened mere moments before…the very fact he came to save her from certain doom. She explained to him a small bit of what led to this predicament and he finished her story, filling in all the important details she was unwilling to voice. That much fascinated her, was she really giving enough information that it could be inferred or was he inside her head? The thought was intriguing to Janlu, something she never got around to learning because of her condition. As they ran in shadow from reinforcements looking for Janlu, they met up with someone Malice’s knew, Naku, who seemed to be helping. Naku gave Janlu a cloak and, leaving Malice behind to fend off the Jedi assailants, took her to their ship where she met his padawan, Hoshi(3). From there, they took off in a hurry before the Jedi could catch them, leaving Malice to find his own way out. Janlu introduced herself, strangely feeling that it was all normal. She hardly took into account that the situation was quite different, it didn’t feel spontaneous to her, it was supposed to happen. An odd day had turned into the beginning of a new learning experience for Janlu. Learning, not only of new abilities she didn't know she had, but of belonging as well, she finally felt she was where she should be...among the Outcasts.
