The city sounds had dwindled down into their dull, night-time roar of cabs bringing spirited humans home and nocturnal animals waking to explore the changes that had occurred while they slumbered. The air smelled of wet pavement and trash, but there was little surprise in that. The city was always this, consistently inconsistent. Changing as much as it stayed the same.
It was dangerous if you didn't know how to survive.
Luckily, Hazard was well versed in survival. He'd been doing it since he was a young pup. If it was a dog-eat-dog world, well other dogs had best stay out of his way. He was ruthless in his methods, and would not hesitate to throw another dog down to stay on top. That was how the city worked, and if they couldn't handle it... well, they'd better find a human to take them, and fast.
Shelter was as important as food or water to Hazard. Shelter kept him from getting sick, and it kept catchers from trying to nab him while he was resting. And what better shelter was there than a huge, abandoned building? They were all over the city, mostly boarded up and rotting. Some were so well secured it would have taken more time to get into it than he would have spent living inside. But others - others were perfect prizes. Dog-sized holes in the walls for easy access, old crates, shelves, fire blankets, packing peanuts, and abandoned human belongings to add a dash of comfort - even if it did smell of mold. These were the buildings that would serve as long-term holds.
He had planned to wait for Emily before checking this one out, but he was too intrigued. The outside of the building was old, worn, cream brick with curling vines creeping up the sides. The roof sagged in places and had holes in others, and the huge glass windows were opaque with dust and grime. He pushed his way through a crumbling hole to the dark inside and cackled. It was perfect. Minimal light streamed through the crusted windows, illuminating particles of dust that streamed through the air. Many of the old metal shelves were still standing, but one had fallen apart and created a ramp to access the rest. Rather than packing peanuts, the floor was strewn with what looked to be foam blankets, which we far better for warmth on cold nights. All of this contained in a huge, open room. This was perfect.

Emily had too been out in the 'wild' part of the neighborhood since she was little. At first she was born into a warm family, in a cosy place that was until she was abandoned by her mother when she was little. She wasn't even sure how it happened any more but all she remembered was being alone in the world and at this point she didn't even care any more. She was more focused on doing everything else that she had to do in her life and keeping up with things, really just keeping herself alive was all she cared about anymore. She could take care of herself and she really didn't need anyone in her life because of that. She always managed and normally she managed to stay away from other dogs too. She was pretty talented at that, she thought so anyway.
She walked carefully, she felt like it was going to rain some time soon and she felt like it was the smartest idea at this point to get home. Or make a home for the night. Find a home really. To here there was really never a 'home'. But therew ere places that she made herself comfortable. She looked up at the sky and grunted as she pushed herself closer to a build, waiting for the perfect spot to slip in. She paused lifting her nose to the air sniffing for anyone was around, she turned around a little. Once she realized there wasn't anyone else she smirked and pushed her way through some lose dry wall in the building. It was a nicer of the abandoned buildings, there was a nice draft that kept it cool. Occasionally there were small creatures that were dumb enough to get close to her if she was hungry enough to grab one she would.
She sniffed the air once again, checking to see if there was anyone near her. She just wanted to rest for a little while, and wait out the rain. She automatically started to trot to one of her favorite places. A nice cozy spot by a window, some where that she could relax.
