In the beginning end...

"Miss Howle, would you kindly pay attention!" a voice rang out as Melinda snapped to her own consciousness, realizing that she had been gazing off out the window. "Oh, sorry." she calmly replied as she focused down at her test paper. It all seemed like gibberish to her. She began to wonder what she had been writing down the whole time. Reading over the questions and answers, she felt like she knew all the answers confidently.

After she finished her test, she stood to go turn it in, making her way down the aisle of desks. Halfway up, she suddenly stopped as her heart began to pound hard. "What.. the.." A girl sitting next to where she was standing looked up at her with concern. "Melinda, are you okay? You don't look so good." the girl half-whispered. Melinda turned to look at her, and to her surprise, she couldn't even remember who this person was. She began to back up in fear and confusion. None of it made any sense.

The student body president stood up from the corner desk and walked over to Melinda. "Please give me your test and I will turn it in for you." she requested almost nonchalantly.

Melinda looked down at her test sheet and then back at the girl, her eyes darting back and forth. Her head began to hurt. "No... This is some sick joke..." she muttered, holding her head between her hands.

"You are obviously not feeling well. Maybe you should just turn in your test and then go to the nurse." the student body president offered, extending a hand out to her for the paper. Melinda swatted her hand away. "Stay away from me!" Melinda screamed, back up even more. None of this was right.

"What seems to be the problem?

Melinda shook her head violently and screamed out. Now all the students were staring at her, and the teacher was beginning to approach. "I won't accept this! I've done this before!! You can't fool me! I..." Melinda paused suddenly, a tear finding its way to quickly surface and slide down her cheek. "I.... I'm not... I'm dead." she muttered under her breath. "No.. I can't be dead. This can't be real. I won't let it end here!!!"

The president approached her, more stern this time. "I can help you if you like. These feelings. You can be at peace." The girl was seeming to corner her. "Liar!" Melinda shoved her back, but resulted in tripping over a chair as her body fell backwards toward the window. The glass shattered as her body seemed the smash through it. Melinda reached out but received no last-minute rescuing as her body plummeted and fell to the concrete below. The last image being the girl in the window looking down at her with the same expressionless look.

Hours later, Melinda came to, seeing only the clouds in the dark night sky. She heard a slight bit of ruckus as she turned her head from where she was sprawled out on the pavement. There she was, the student body president, engaged in heavy battle against an older looking girl. The older girl seemed to be defending a smaller boy who looked injured. Melinda could barely hold her eyes open, closing them to only listen to the sounds of clanging metal and gun shots.

When Melinda opened her eyes again, it was to the sound of the gun hitting the ground and sliding towards her. She struggled to stand as she watched the scene. The older girl was now gone with no trace and the black-haired girl drew back her hand which seemed to have some sort of glowing weapon attached to it and lunged forward to bring the boy into a hug and stabbed him through with the bladed weapon on her hand. The boy suddenly vanished in her arms as the girl turned to look at Melinda. "You are awake. And just in time. Because you are next." she spoke softly without expression as she began to approach Melinda.

In a panic, Melinda struggled to gain her balance on her feet, picking up the gun and aimed at Kazuza, the black-haired girl pausing to look at her questioningly. Melinda then pulled the trigger, shooting the student body president in the shoulder. Kazuza looked at the wound then back at Melinda. "Distortion." she spoke out and began to approach Melinda again. Melinda stared wide-eyed at Kazuza and then emptied the clip at her. The bullets seemed to deflect off her body as she approached.

"What kind.. of monster is she?" Melinda turned and ran as far as she could from her, questions filling her mind. What was this place and why was that girl making people vanish like that? What was going on and was she really dead? Melinda found a corner under some stairs in a hallway and curled up quietly, waiting it out until morning before she would try to figure anything out.

On the Field of Battle

Cole tapped his pencil softly on his desk as he watched the lesson for the day. He hated math class the most, but took the time to stop from his busy schedule of day-dreaming of football to continue writing. He had this sense that he'd been through this class before, some time ago, but blew it off for a dream. He sketched down the little graph to go with the equation and glanced around the room. His head popped up with the sudden disturbance of class by a strange girl. Brushing some hair out of his face, he looked up at her.

"This is some sick joke.....I won't accept this! I've done this before!! You can't fool me!"

Cole raised an eyebrow but stayed put. The class president could surely handle this situation without him meddling in it. He suddenly lept up to reach for the girl as she tumbled out of the window and missed by an inch. He backed off as the president walked up and put a hand on his shoulder. He gathered his things as the bell began to ring and went out to go practice for football. He was one of the senior football members and co-captain of the team.

He changed in the locker rooms, bantering back and forth with the other students and laughing as he got his pads and helmet on. They were running full contact drills today, and he was ready. He played defensive line a little bit...was it in his early high school years?

He sauntered out onto the field and knocked helmets with a buddy of his, the quarterback.

"You just give the word Joshua and I'll be ready!" Cole gave the quarterback a thumbs up and jogged into position. The snap hit and the ball got tossed his way. He took off down the field and one of the lighter players lept on him, arms around his waist. Cole stumbled a bit but continued to trudge until finally tackled. Cole rolled over onto his back after the kid and another team mate got off of him, and Joshua helped him up. They continued plays until the sun was beginning to set and everyone was packing up. Cole stayed after practice to continue some more drill. It was how he stayed good. He'd learn his plays inside out, and then improvise when he needed to. It also gave him time to think. He felt a sense of not belonging for a while now. He couldn't remember his schedule, but he instinctively went to class. It didn't feel right.

He ran across the field, jutting off to the right and doing a spin back to the left, imagining opponents until a gunshot broke his concentration. There were no guns on school. Instinctively, he grabbed his side. What? That was strange. That had to be some sort of reaction to a trauma...Why couldn't he remember? Cole decided to quickly change and go check out the gunshot. When he arrived, he saw nothing but blood on the ground and no one to be found. He stared at the blood for a good long while, kneeling down next to it and dipping his finger in. It was fresh. He wasn't imagining things.

Murders were going on at the school? He shivered at the thought and forced himself to go back to his dorm. He stayed awake all night, unable to get sleep, the scene replaying in his head over and over, even after a long shower.

Arriving at school the following morning, he had a coffee and stepped into class. Mentioning something to one of his classmates, he was met with ignorance and skepticism. He frowned. He hadn't imagined it. It had been real. No one had noticed! He slipped out of class at the very end and went to check it out. Everything had been cleaned up perfectly, as if nothing had been there. That girl never even returned to class after falling out of the window! Did she die? He had forgotten that. It was important, why did he forget?

He tried to rationalize it in his head. Had someone else come upon the scene? Did they call the cops and it get cleaned up? Would they have cleaned up a scene this quickly? No. They would need to take a blood sample, get it to the lab, look for casings and the murder weapon, and would probably want to see that scene more when it was light outside. But there were no cops, no caution tape, and no one was chatting about that. It wasn't right. This wasn't right. Something was up...

❝ I look in the mirror but I do not see me. Not even a little. Not even at all. ❞

The young girl had been out skipping class again. By now, she had pretty much fallen into the pattern of defying the system of things. Her sister had broken free a long while back and Yumino had obviously followed suit quickly. She knew she was dead even though she couldn't remember how she had died. It had seemed to be a long time that they had become rogues against the student body president who insisted they not act out as such.

Her headphones were cupped over her ears and she walked to the beat of the music down the hallway, humming all the way. She walked outside and stretched her arms above her head, groaning slightly from the strain of her muscles. Looking over to a guy standing by himself out in the courtyard, she quirked an eyebrow at him. Pulling down her headphones, the hint of a girl band playing softly from the earpieces, as she removed the lollipop in her mouth and approached him. "Excuse me... but shouldn't you be in class or something?" she asked, cocking her head sideways in a bit of confusion at his presence. At this point, she was only making sure he wasn't a human after all. It was very rare that an NPC would slip from the normal drab of things and do unpredictable things. Yumino smiled with a sort of playful innocence that warmly invited an answer from the guy in front of her.

Come to think of it, she had never actually remembered seeing this person before, but how was she to be sure since she hardly paid attention to the NPCs or if any new comers came. The only way she'd know was to ask questions and gauge their responses accordingly. Yumino was quite used to this by now, so it came naturally at this point. This world was quite strange, and the only way to survive was to adapt and keep moving. That was something Yumino, unfortunately, had learned the hard way in her time in this odd place. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Or just kills you later when you're not paying attention.

"Even God himself can't hold me back."

Melinda had managed to slip into an odd sleep-like state but startled awake. She sat up and peeked out from behind the stairs. Classes had already started. She tried to reason with herself that everything she had experienced yesterday was merely a nightmare and that she was now awake in the real world, but then why did she wake up under the stairs if it all weren't real. She was having a very difficult time grasping the idea that she was really dead and that what happened yesterday was real.

Coming to a stand, she placed a hand on her forehead and sighed.
"This isn't fair. I wasn't even started yet." she muttered to herself and looked around. "I guess it can't hurt to just... do what I want then." she figured as she wandered out from behind the stairs, being sure to watch out for the student body president. Doubtful that Kazuza would make an appearance in the middle of class, so Melinda began to walk about the halls carefully.

After much wandering, she found herself at the cafeteria which was currently uninhabited.
"I wonder if I'm still able to eat. I mean.. I was still able to feel all that pain when I fell..." she paused, placing a hand on the back of her head and looked down at herself. Her clothes had a few small rips here and there from the shards of glass, but there were no scars or bruises whatsoever. "How weird..." she commented.

She walked over to the vending and purchased a ticket for beef udon and looked down at it. After a few moments, she traded in the ticket for her meal and took it to one of the many empty tables. Hesitant, she took a bite and her eyes widened slightly.
"H-hot!" she exclaimed as she fanned her mouth from burning her tongue. She could feel the pain as well as be able to taste the food. The idea itself was strange and incomprehensible in her mind. Nothing made sense anymore. If she was truly dead, was she stuck in some sort of limbo or was this heaven? Or maybe she had already been reborn and this was her new life? No, then she wouldn't be Melinda anymore. The possibilities raced through her mind as she leaned back in her chair and stared up at the ceiling.
