Invisible wall? Unclimable mountains? Lava moat? A wall of cliffracers (the little devils)? What?
Since this is a place appropriate for stupid ideas...
How about Rebecca Black at the edge of the border and when you get close she starts singing, "It's Skyrim, Skyrim, gotta get back in Skyrim." Turn around and walk away to get her to shut up. Her voice is enough to convince people of suicide, after all...

You know, it would be neat if would be infinite like GTA: San Andreas. If you get away from main land you won't be going anywhere but "away". Example (if I were to ever create a map): To the east are impassable mountains, south are guards guarding entrance into Cyrodill (is the name right?), north infinite uninhabited icelands, and west an infinite ocean. It would bore the player, but someone like me would avoid trying to go any further as I KNOW there's NOTHING over there. It would simply give me more space and would prevent me from getting cornered by two spriggans summoning bears while I'm trying to back away. How was I supposed to know the boundary was right behind me?!

I think it'd be funny if they did something like ATV: Off-Road Fury and send your character flying half-way across the map.

Just thinking that makes me want to kill myself, but not before a few months after Skyrim's release, of course. Anyway, thank Talos, Bethesda's sense of humor is not that dark.

i dont see why they dont make natural borders: unscalable mountains, sharp cliffs etc.

How was I supposed to know the boundary was right behind me?! This a good idea, but could they make a code generator to continue the landscape properly? if they coudnt they ground would just become white after awhile. they could make the icelands become a colder temerature and freeze you at a slow rate to death. sort of a warning but you could get around if a situation like yours happens.
