In the Eight and One pantheon Akatosh ( formerly the Aldmeri god Auri-El though still worshipped by this name in Valenwood, known as Alkosh to the Khajiit folk ) is the Chief Deity of all gods and for the lack of a better word the mediator between the Aedra and mortal subjects. To the Nords Akatosh is Alduin The World Eater who comes at the end of every age to devour the world. Too keep her Nordic allies from turning against her St.Alessia changed the Aldmeri "Auri-El" to Akatosh so that the Nords would think Cyrodiilians did not worship the Aldmeri gods ( the now freed slave folk despite they revolted and defeated they're elven lords still worshipped the Aldmeri gods as they had as slaves ) and this would keep things just a tiny bit less tenuous with the Nords of Skyrim. Keep in mind this is THOUSANDS of years before the Fourth Era Year 201, in ancient times the Nords worshiped Alduin as well as dragons so at this time making "Alduin" into Akatosh fit the times to keep a war sparked from religion from occurring. Now onto a more recent event...
Martin Septim shattered the amulet of kings and transformed into the Divine Akatosh in the temple of the one where he originally was going to light the dragonfires to seal the barriers between mundus and oblivion. Akatosh himself was in the mortal world and he did battle with the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon and won before his body turned to stone as what many will say ( and it infact did happen ) was further proof of the eight and ones existence. So if Akatosh is Alduin after all; in Skyrim, we are effectively fighting the Aedric chief deity AND the very same entity that saved Cyrodiil 200 years ago! Crazy ain't it?!
