Devon sighed as he sat in the taxi for the long ride to the ranch he was being sent too. He listened to his iPod jamming out to some rock while the scenery went from city life to suburb and soon into open stretches of land that had nothing of interest on them. Devon yawned with boredom not enjoying this ride at all as he tapped the pencil in his hand on the notebook that he was supposed to us as a journel for the trip. He shrugged as he looked back down at the notebook starting to write in it, not much caring if his parent's like what he wrote but putting his feelings towards this whole thing in words.

"How much more till I get to this ranch? I am sick of sitting in this car."Devon asked and got a look from the taxi drive before he heard the words 'About 15 mintutes or so.' He hated having to wait, it was bad enough he had to go to this stupid ranch but his parents took his cellphone, laptop and gameing stuff away, and left him with his iPod and that was it. Devon sat in his seat moving around in it a bit trying to get comfortable while he waited the rest of the ride in silence trying to determine how he would deal with the people when he got there. He glanced up as the car started to slow and turned down a drive way soon stopping in front of a house.

Devon got out of the car stretching as he walked around the back of it a jingling sound being heard with each step he took. He walked out from behind the car standing in front of the house in, tripp pants and a black tank top shrugging as he leaned against the taxi after the driver got out to get the thing from the trunk. Devon looked up at the man on the porch who was leaning against one of the supporting post seeming to be looking the boy over.
"Yo pops, don't like me already? Figs most don't know what to think of a boy all dressed up and looking all deathly."He chuckled as he saw the man just shake his head at what was said.

Devon sighed as his things where brought to the porch and set beside that very man it seeming to prove to him that he was really stuck here. He pulled out the earplug headphones that head sound coming out of them, before turning his iPod off and sliding it in his pocket along with the headphones. Devon looked around at everything not much enjoying what he saw nor what he smelled, but said nothing about it. He noticed a girl with light brown hair a smile coming to his face enjoying what he saw her in, thinking she would make this trip worth it, but not knowing she already had a distaste for him and where he was from.

The brunette walked calmly through the barn, her hands in her pockets and her cowboy hat on her head. It was still early in the morning, only a little after six, but Penelope Goldenrose was already up and about. She had woken about a half hour earlier and had gone straight out to the barn after grabbing something to eat. The main barn aisle was cleared out but the other barn, the one for the mustangs and rehab horses, was full to its limit. While the ranch’s horses were outside for the night and most of the day, the mustangs and rehab horses were only allowed outside under supervision. This was just to make sure they didn’t bring any harm to themselves or the other horses if they tried to get out. Pen leaned against the door to one of the mustang’s stalls and stared at the paint mare. The mare, Trapped Spirit, glanced up and pricked her ears up. Trapped had been at the ranch for about six months now and had adapted well to living in contact with humans. Pen wasn’t sure if her aunt and uncle were planning on selling the mare or keeping her. If they asked Pen, she’d tell them to keep the mare but she said that about all horses. Each and every one of them she fell in love with and wished they could keep them all. However, they couldn’t and some had to be sold to new homes but some lucky ones got to stay. Pen reached out to the mare and ran a hand down her neck. The mare nickered softly before turning back to her hay. The teenager turned away from the mare and made her way outside. She looked up at the clear blue sky and smiled. She loved when they had good weather and so did the horses. They always seemed to be in a better mood when it was a clear day, probably because they got to spend almost the whole day outside.

Penelope turned toward the house as she heard the door close and a familiar face made its way over to her. She smiled and waved at her cousin. “Morning Jimmy,” she said as her cousin made his way over to her. Because they were the same age, Jimmy and her had always been extremely close. He was more like a brother then a cousin. She was close to Ben and Kaya but Jimmy and her had always been closest, mainly because they both shared the same love for horses and had trained multiple together. Her eldest cousin, Ben, enjoyed riding but not as much as them. He had grown up on the ranch but had been excited to get away and go to college, lucky he was back to spend the summer before returning. And Kaya, well Kaya was thirteen and Pen didn’t have much in common with the young girl. She still rode but that was the only thing they had in common. Yet they were close, Penny didn’t hate any of her cousins, she just was closest with Jimmy. “Hey Pen,” Jimmy said with a smile. He yawned slightly before looking at her. “So, that city boy’s coming today.” Penny groaned and rolled her eyes. She could always be herself with Jimmy so she didn’t have to hide her displeasure at the thought of having some rich city kid spending the summer with them. Her aunt and uncle told her to be nice but Pen wasn’t sure how, especially if the kid turned out to be a lazy jerk that didn’t do anything but cause trouble. Luckily, Jimmy shared the same opinion as her over the whole situation. He chuckled slightly at her reaction and Pen shot him a mock glare. “Please don’t remind me, please,” she said and turned away from her cousin. She began to walk toward the fields and heard Jimmy behind her.

The ranch had many large fields for all the horses along with two riding rings and a round pen. They also had miles of trails in the woods behind the ranch. It was a perfect place to ride, at least in Pen’s mind. She reached the first field and climbed onto the fence, sitting on top of it. Jimmy sat beside her and whistled, Pen doing the same. Within a few seconds, the pounding of hooves could be heard as a group of horses cantered toward the fence. Due to how large the pastures were, the horses had learned to come when they were whistled for. It was a lot easier than trekking through the huge fields to find them. Pen smiled as she watched Jimmy got over to his mare, Justice’s Last Stand, and stroked the palomino mare. A neigh form the side caught her attention and Pen glanced over at the stallion at the fence. Pen jumped off the fence and walked over to a bay Hanoverian stallion, slipping through the fence. He nickered softly and pushed his head against Pen’s chest. She had gotten the stallion only a year and a half ago as a rehab horse. She had named him Unknown Soldier or Bentley for short. He had been a vicious stallion at first but she had slowly won him over and now he was the most loyal horse she’d ever met. However, he only trusted her and Jimmy, who had helped Pen gain his trust. He put up with other people but wouldn’t let other touch or ride him. Since he was a stallion, Bentley went out in a smaller field by himself. However, he was often seen at the edge of the fence socializing with Justice, who was his best friend. The two went everywhere together and Bentley would almost panic if he wasn’t near Justice. It had gotten better over the years but the two were still extremely close. “So how’s your boy?” Jimmy asked form behind and Pen smiled. She stroked Bentley as the stallion pulled at Jimmy’s shirt playfully. He was still young, only five, and still acted like a colt at times. “He’s great, Justice looks good,” she replied and Jimmy nodded. He stuffed his hands in his books and sighed. Pen wrapped her arms around Bentley’s neck before smiling. Without a word, she climbed the fence and ran into the barn. She returned a few seconds later with Bentley’s and Justice’s rope halter. “Up for some bareback riding?” she asked, already knowing the answer.

Jimmy immediately grabbed Justice’s sky blue halter before climbing the fence into her field. The mare was waiting calmly, and let her rider slip the halter on. Jimmy led her through the gate and into Bentley’s field, coming to stand beside them. Pen calmly slipped Bentley’s halter on and led him over to the fence, she easily mounted the large stallion and waited for Jimmy to do the same. The two both loved bareback riding, it was their favorite thing to do. The horses also loved it too and were always well behaved. Pen patted Bentley calmly and looked over at Jimmy and Justice. The boy had mounted his own horse and brought Justice to a halt beside Bentley. Bentley shook his head happily and neighed happily. He stamped his hoof impatiently while Justice simply stood patiently. Jimmy glanced at her and smiled. “Well lets go,” he said mew squeezing Justice with his legs. The mare immediately broke into a canter, with Bentley on her heels. Both horses were already warmed up and anything but stiff from their night in the field so it wouldn’t do any harm to let them set the pace. Pen felt the wind blow her hair all over the place and she laughed happily. The two horses now galloped side by side, their strides equal and neither one wanting to pull ahead. Pen pulled Bentley up as they neared the end of the field before spinning the stallion around and racing back down. This time, they were racing and all of them knew it. Justice lengthened her strides, coming up beside Bentley but the stallion quickly pulled ahead and put a few strides between them. She could hear the wind in her ear and Jimmy’s voice urging Justice on. As they reached the end of the field again, Pen pulled Bentley up and the stallion came to a graceful halt. “I win!” she called to Jimmy as he brought Justice to a halt. She smiled as Jimmy glared at her, but she knew it was pretend. She opened the gate from atop of Bentley and rode him toward the stables, Jimmy and Justice behind her. They quickly dismounted and led the horses over to the hoses. They hosed both of them down quickly as a taxi drove up the driveway. Both teens knew who it was and exchanged glances, Pen groaned and rolled her eyes while Jimmy sighed and made an attempt at fake gagging. Pen chuckled slightly before leading Bentley over to some grass and tying him up. She waited for Jimmy to do the same before the two began to walk toward the car.

“Now remember Jimmy, we must be polite and pleasant,” she said, trying to sound like her aunt. Jimmy laughed at her and pushed her arm gently. She stuck her tongue out at him childishly and glared at him. He looked at her and smiled. “Who says that I have to do that,” he asked and smirked mischievously. Penny shook her hand and ran a hand through her hair. Some said that she was the only one that could put up with Jimmy 24/7 and sometimes she thought they were right. Here cousin knew how to be incredibly immature and annoying when he wanted to be. She ignored his question and shoved him gently only to have him shove her back. She adjusted her hat before walking a few steps ahead of him. She stuck her hands in the pockets of her jeans and glanced over to spot her uncle on the porch of the house with a boy beside him. Pen came to a stop and turned her head toward Jimmy mouthing ‘That’s him?’. Her cousin nodded and Pen sighed. She had been hoping he’d be coming later in the morning but it seemed the trouble started now. However, the young lady smiled slightly and walked onto the porch. “Morning Uncle Rick,” she said calmly and then turned toward the boy sitting beside him. From her uncle’s expression, Pen knew that the boy was probably going to be a pain to live with for the next three months. And, of course, since he was close to her age, her aunt and uncle had put Jimmy in charge of him. The reasons had been that they were busy, Ben needed to relax, Kaya was too young, and Jason had chores around the ranch to do. So they got stuck with babysitting duty. “Hello, I’m Penelope Goldenrod but please call me Pen or Penny, though I prefer Pen. That’s my cousin, Jimmy,” she said, nodding her head toward Jimmy who nodded calmly to the boy. “We are going to help you get settled in and show you how things work around here, okay?”

Devon looked at the girl as she gave her name then pointed out the name of one of the males that she seemed to be close with. He replyed with a simple shrug before he decided to speak to her."Devon Loche, litte chica pen. And Yo Jimbo. And yeah whatever, I can pretend to care about what ya show me. Don't much like something that is bigger and stronger then me tends to start trouble."Devon nodded his head when he said hello to the cousin be seemed to not care much about this whole idea but said nothing more about it after the earlier statement. He turned towards the barn yard looking area ready to follow them around and listen to everything about this place he was forced to live at for three freaking months.

Devon smirked as he looked that land over shaking his head with a soft mutter of discontent. He walked off the porch and headed for the barn, figuring if she hadn't already been leading that is where they would head first. Devon glanced toward the two horses tied up and graze as he stood there watching them for a bit seeming to be amused by how they looked so peaceful there.
"Yo Pen, who's the mare? She is well defined in her muscles and seem level headed."He looked towards Justice, pointing at her as he looked over towards Pen, wondering if she even knew he would of study for this trip to hell not wanting to look like a completely idiot while out here.

Devon though kept his distance of the horses a bit nervous on if they would kick at him, sinces his pants jingled loudly and didn't know if they were accustomed to such a sound. He waited for Pen's answer still wondering if she was in a shock of what he asked her about the horse in front of him. He shifted slightly his pants jingling a bit as he did so, nothing but ears flicking towards the noise, or so he thought. Devon walked a bit closer towards the mares taking each step carefully letting them hear the jingles while he moved starting to talk quietly towards them.
"Shh girl, it's gonna be alright..I won't hurt you."He said with soft cooing to try and comfort the mare as he got close, not noticing he made on mistake and that was the crouching down and moving slowly towards the horse.

Devon soon was in kicking range of the mare as he cooed to her still trying to comfort her before he got to close and got a kick in the thigh from the mare, that thought he was going to attack her by the way he was crouching down some. He yelled out in pain as he fell to the ground in pain grabbing his thigh as the horse seemed to prance a bit and the nickered at Devon thought was a laugh.
"Why I should turn you both into glue!"Devon yelled out as he held his thigh tightly it hurting so bad as he laid there hearing foot steps hurrying over to check on him. He opened his eyes long enough to see the old man leaning over him asking him about if he was okay or something about walking his leg hurting so much that nothing said to him made much sense. Devon winced as he felt the old man pull him to sit up and looked towards Jimmy then Pen with a sigh telling them to help get him inside the house and to be looked at to make sure he didn't break anything.

"I am fine, just need to rest a bit before moving. So give me a few I will walk my own a** back to the house."Devon said firmly trying to push the old man away from him so he could do things on his own, ignoring the others around him and pushed away that tried to help. He staggered up wincing as he had to use the near by fence to get him up striaght. Devon, rubbed his thigh wincing some before hobbling back towards the house refusing the help from anyone or anything and pushing away anyone that got to close and tried to help him either way.
