I'm currently researching Breed Specific Legislation for ENC1101, we are to pick an issue and build on it the entire semester, and I'm quite appalled by these laws! I mean, I knew it bad, but seriously? I'm quite glad that only one city here in Florida has these laws (and its far, far away from me!).

Starting at Sect 5-17.1, are the laws about owning, confining, and identifying Pits. According to this, if the dog even looks like a Pit Bull, it must be a Pit Bull, even it its, say, a short muzzled, broad headed, stocky super-mutt. Ridiculous!

"In order to protect the public and to afford relief from the severe harm and injury which is likely to result from a pit bull dog attack..." What about that 10 pound family Pomeranian that went psycho and killed an infant in just a few minutes while the baby's Uncle went to make her a bottle and left her and dog on the bed in 2000? What about those crazy, inbred little Chihuahuas and Dachshunds that terrorize homes and neighborhoods every where because the dogs were too "cute to punish" as pups? The Golden Retrievers, America's #1 Family Dog, who actually scored lower on the ATTS Temperament Tests then Pit Bulls did? (http://atts.org/)

I guess the whole point of this mini-rant (that got a bit out of control, sorry >.<) is that I never realized just how extensive these bans and laws were. I've always been interested in BSL, ever since my aunt and uncle had to pretty much hide their Pit Bull, Roscoe, from their insurance company, or they would be dropped, or have their rates jacked up. They had 2 young kids (they're older now), and those kids borderline abused that dog (as kids do to pets, because they don't understand how to be gentile and nice with them at that age). They would lay on him, poke him, pull his ears, pinch him, all kinds of things, and he'd just sit there and take it. If they got a little out of hand, he'd first give them a little lick. If they kept going, he gently n** them, and beyond that, he'd simply just get up and leave. I've helped care for dozens of Pit Bulls and Pit Mixes at my local Humane Society, and most of those Pit Bulls were more well behaved, loving and loyal, then over 1/2 of the other dogs in there. I recently looked at the shelters web site, and 16 of the 24 dogs were Pits or Pit Mixes, and some of them, I even knew from volunteering, even though I have not been there since April or May. They are still there because of what they are, not because of how they behave (which usually isn't too bad, as long as there are no leashes involved rofl ).

Anyway, my mini-rants aside, I would like to hear your sides of BLS. Agree, disagree, neutral? Would also like some good web sites, article, ect, that I can build off of as my class goes on. I currently have PitBullsOnTheWeb, ATTS, and a bit I have gotten off of Wikipedia (great source, right XD).
