I was rummaging around on tv tropes and I quote:
Based on advanced knowledge of Skyrim, badly. Morrowind is destroyed by volcanic eruption, and what little remains have been invaded by Argonians and the Black Marsh. The Black Marsh and Elsweyr have succeeded from the Empire, the Nords are in civil war. Looks to be fun.

WTF? Has anybody else heard this noise? Red Mountain went up? gonk
I'm not a huge lover of the Temple loving Darkies but the Telvanni and the Redoran were all right! For the love of Nocturnal, Therana can't be dead! She's too batshit nutso to die! *sob* crying

I knew about this. What you just read is some plot, well more like back story for the Elder Scrolls Novel "The Infernal City." It helps set up what happened after the end of Oblivion and the 3rd Era with the start of the 4th.

Let's talk about Morrowind first. In Vivec's absence, whether he was taken by Daedra or not, his slowly draining god like powers that kept Baar Dau (The Ministry of Truth) from crashing into Vivec City. Because of Vivec's disappearance Baar Dau becomes unstable. To help keep the moon from crashing into the city A Dunmer called Vuhon creates an Ingenium that uses at first dozens of dying souls, then a small number of living ones to stabilize the rock. The soul of Sul's (another Dunmer and one of the "heros" of the book) wife Ilzheven was among them. In a fight to free her, the Ingenium is destroyed and the rock crashes into Vivec with all the energy it originally had. The impact causes Red Mountain to erupt and destroys the entire island of Vvardenfell, as well as causing massive destruction to the rest of the province.

Soon after the eruption the Argonians invade and conquer Morrowind driving what population of Dunmer that remained to Solstheim Island.

Okay now lets talk about the province's seceding from the Empire. With central power basically gone, a la no proper emperor, old grudges from ages past will always resurface causing fights and other things to break out all over the Empire. So it's only natural that each province would want to break away. Given all the crap that Black Marsh has taken from the Imperial control Empire I was not surprised that they rised up and took back Black Marsh for the Argonians.

The Thalmor seize control of the old Aldmeri Dominion (Valenwood and the Summerset Isle). So they took both of those province's away. The Thalmor was an Altmeri government setup in Valenwood during the formation of the Aldmeri Dominion (circa 2E 830) on behalf of the local Bosmer claimant, Camoran Anamexes.[1] The Thalmor kept order in Valenwood whereas before it had no true government. It was dissolved shortly after when Tiber Septim brought Valenwood into his Empire.

Shortly after these events took place Titus Mede (Before his reign as Emperor, Titus Mede had been several things, Colovian warlord, a soldier in an outlaw army, and a king in Cyrodiil. He took the Imperial City with less than a thousand men and seized control of the crumbling Empire.) is crowned the new emperor by conquest, and begins the task of bringing all the provinces back together again.

Oh and all of this takes place roughly 30-40 years after Oblivion ended.

I don't think the entire of island of Vvardenfel is gone, just loads of it is covered in lava and Vivec CIty is now a boiling lake from where the moon crashed into the city. So it's possible that Fyr is not dead as his tower was on a small island off the coast of Vvardenfel. Just like Barenziah and Helseth there were in Mournhold and Morunhold is on the mainland they could have escaped the city before the Argonian's took the city.

Indeed that puppet government is totally in control of both Valenwood and the Summerset Isle. Of all the enemies that Titus Mede has/had the Thalmor are the only ones that he could not crush when he took the crown by force.

I know I was all like O.O then sad when I read that in the book. I couldn't believe they would do that to my favorite race and place. A lot of things can happen in 200 years so the Dunmer may have breed themselves back into a populace people, hopefully they launched a counter-attack and took back the main land of Morrowind.

I suddenly have genocidal hatred for the argonians where there was once sympathy for their plight... Although I think the Dunmeri Diaspora could explain why the Bosmer and Altmer are looking a little greyer than they used to.

I never really like the Argonian's as a playable race, but now that they have done this well the Infernal City can take the whole lot of them. In fact I want to say it was The Hist that told them to do these things. That's one thing, The Hist that is, that get's explained a bit more in the novel. In a way the Argonians are like the borg that they are all connected to the Hist and the Hist is connected with them and can control their minds. It's almost like a moth to a bug light.

Well judging from the effects it had on the Blackwood company, I am not really surprised it has that kind of effect on them.

Well the Blackwood company was only using Hist sap to "work" a job, so those effects are a bit different than the natural connection that the Argonian's have with the Hist trees.

I think it's some kind of symbiosis. This is mostly conjecture, but from talking to and reading about argonians in the games there is some kind of ceremony where they ingest the sap at the beginning of puberty. My guess is this is the trigger for the link.

You may have something there, I'll need to go back and re-read The Infernal City again and check on the Argonian/Hist tree link.

Actually an NPC in Morrowind talks about it. Her name is "Travelling-New-Woman" and she's east of Vivec.

"My parents told me not to lick the Hist tree until my Naming Day, so I did. My parents caught me and a boy from my nest in a soft-leaf patch right before the naming ceremony. I feared I'd get more of a licking from my parents than I gave the tree... So I ran as fast as I could through the swamp and into the rest of the kids waiting for their naming ceremony. Everyone had a good laugh and the name stuck."

It's been awhile since I played Morrowind and I don't remember were everyone is and what they had to say. But I still think there is more to the Hist than just the sap being the main thing that casuse's the control over the Argonian's.

I love the Dunmer, but they got what was coming to them. Everything that occurred was a result of their own actions.
