~The Imperial Fortress of the Mori Shogunate~

What was once the Tokyo Imperial Palace and home to the Emperor Tenrai, now stands as the only remaining vestige of the current Japanese Government, and the dwelling place of the man who has effectively become the leader of the country in all but the title of Emperor, the Lord Shogun Motonari Mori. Once a warm and welcoming household, a stronghold of diplomacy between the nation of Japan and other countries, the Palace has been locked down and reinforced, security built up to such a level that the home has become a fortress, walls currently under construction to ensure that the 'next Emperor', whomever they might be, will never come under the same sort of attack that lead to Emperor Tenrai's death. With a small army of guards and soldiers patrolling the area and watching from all corners, and with the Seven Spears of the Mori currently watching over their Shogun to ensure that nothing goes wrong, the Shogun's fortress has become a symbol of the strength still remaining amongst the country's military, and while chaos may reign in some districts, there are none who dare to challenge the brilliant man who lay within, plotting for whatever challenge comes next in his conquest.

Lately, rumors have begun to leak out of the palace of some great undertaking in the lower levels of the fortress, some secret project for the country's defense under the direction of the shogun himself. Whether or not there is any truth to these rumors is debatable, but the most interesting question of all is...if there really is something going on down in the levels beneath the palace, why would the shogun allow any rumors to leak out of the palace at all?

It had been an odd day yesterday...But perhaps that was being an understatement. The school taken hostage, revengeful samurai looking for her to use as bait, the whole situation solved with the arrival of the Avengers, and her being taken away from there by Tatsuya Suou clad in this iron suit. It hadn't been until she arrived at the intimidating gates of the palace that she knew were she was, and why she had been taken here. It...hadn't really pleased her to know she was at the Imperial Fortress, the only thing she needed at that moment being to get back home and take a long warm bath, but...at least she needed to thank Tatsuya for pulling her away from danger, and well...thank him for it as well...she guessed. The night before she hadn't meet with the one who called her all the way here from Inaba, and to be truly honest, she was thankful for it. This man... she wasn't sure she wanted to see him again. Sure, it had been him who had saved her the day before,it had to be; and the one who had let her stay in this huge and beautiful room for the night... but, as much as that was true...he had also been the one who... Her heart sank at the memory, the girl shaking her head as if to wipe away the dark thoughts surrounding her. Green orbs shifted away from the window, snapping back from her thoughts, and back to the hall she was passing by. This morning she had decided to explore a little, noting the mixture of warmth the walls and everything inside seemed to irradiate and the cold feeling all the tight security brought to her...Though, it really impressed her how big and traditional this place was...and well, who would have thought she would ever be inside the emperor's household?

But...she would need to stop avoiding the courtyard sometime soon,(even if she had no idea of where the courtyard could be) wouldn't she? But, the idea of joining Mori for lunch... Why had she accepted anyway? To thank him? To tell him to get her home? To remember how much she hated him and then find her way back to Inaba by her own means? To...plead him to let her see her boyfriend, wherever he was? All those were possible, and none of them convinced her enough to go and actually do something, and they all passed through her mind in some way, but, it was also her mind that stop her from moving, stalling her time around in the hallways until she could come up with something to do. The blond sighed, her feet taking her to nowhere at all, just following the path as she lost herself on thoughts again, and it wasn't much longer before the sun shone down on her, making her to snap up, looking at the garden in front of her. Really legs? Of all the huge palace, you had to end up here at the courtyard? She tensed, knowing that it was probably too late to just turn back and run. And with a sigh, and a brush of her hand through her hair, she moved forward to meet Mori. "Good afternoon..."

Shogun Motonari Mori of the Mori Shogunate

It was difficult to predict the actions of fools at times, particularly when they were hiding like rats from the arm of judgment and scuttling about, vermin waiting for their moment to infest those who had been proven their betters with their stench. However, the Shogun had no reason to complain; the actions of the Amago crew had been well within the realm of his expectations once the news of his 'engagement' had been spread, and as a test run for the Avengers Initiative, the incident had provided the perfect result. No students had died, the collateral damage had been kept relatively to a minimum save for the front area of the school, and each of his team members had managed to overpower or drive away the samurai without having received any significant wounds. In addition, the side-mission of rescuing Minori from the school and extracting her back to the capital to meet with him had been immediately and completely successful, with her night in the guest room having only delayed the meeting that he had hoped to have with her last night. Unfortunately, business had delayed him then. Now, he was once again free, a table in the courtyard settled where he sat in a refined and entirely calm fashion, sipping from a small cup of tea as the blossoms fell all about them. The Estate was now a fortress, there could be no doubt, not with all of the soldiers who were scattered around them right now watching for any attempt at intrusion and ready to repel rebellion or attack at a moment's notice...but it was also still filled with the beauty that Emperor Tenrai and his family had sewn into the fibers of the building over the years, a serene locale to have a dinner beneath the warm sky without interruption from the bustle of the world beyond the walls. And it was here that he watched with an unflinching gaze as Minori tentatively made her way out to meet him, looking as though she would rather be any place else in the world than standing before him. He supposed she could be forgiven for that.

"There is no need to look to nervous. If I intended to harm you, I wouldn't have sent my Avengers to tend to those brutes who tried to kidnap you," the young man spoke calmly, evenly, a gloved hand inviting her to the small table beneath a small sun-umbrella across from him. All the while he took another sip from his cup, eyes watching her with some calculating interest, but perhaps a hint of something less rigid in the air between them. This was a moment of peace and relaxation, there was no need for things to be so stuffy and tense, was there? How many times would a man of his position have the opportunity to indulge in a meal with his lovely betrothed without work coming swiftly to whisk him away? How could a man hope to resist the call of work when one's duty was the protection and oversight of an entire country? No, this was a rare occasion. He motioned for one of the servants lingering around the edges of the yard to bring over a pot and pour the girl a nice cup of warm brew, eyes still expectantly fixated on her until she would take the seat that had been given. It was only polite, after all, and he had gone to such pains to bring her here. "Do not be troubled, Minori Koroko," the young Shogun spoke in his calm, even voice...perhaps not the most reassuring in tone, but then, if he could remain so calm and relaxed in spite of the tension then perhaps there really was nothing to be all that nervous about after all...and that, in and of itself, could be reassuring, couldn't it? "Of all the precious things in this country, there are none save of course for the lands of Chugoku which I would hold to me as dear than my own wife. You are free to feel entirely at ease with me. ...Or not, if that is your wish."

He seemed relaxed, removed from his usual armor and sitting at the table, sipping tea and waiting on a meal that perhaps was taking just a few moments too long, he seemed almost 'human' for the 'monster' that she had likely built him up to be inside of his head. He didn't seem angry or perturbed in the least, not vindictive, and with the sun on his cheeks a person could almost not be blamed if they mistook him for appearing...warm? No, no, it couldn't be. "I'm certain that you have things you would like to discuss. As do I..." he paused, setting down the cup for a moment as he watched her still, analyzing her movements, her expressions, the curve of her lips and the wariness in her eye telling him all he needed to know about how she was feeling, "So before anything else, I will permit you to ask me any three questions you desire. It is only fair, is it not?"

In the slim silence found between the shogun and his betrothed there came a curious sound to those within the courtyard. It sounded like the swishing of cloth on a laundry pole in midsummer, and as it neared another, even softer, sound could be recognized. It was a gentle clink of metal on wood as though the one approaching was wearing a thin vest of chain mail. The approaching sound came in through the great and expansive imperial fortress and it seemed neither rushed nor worried so it was likely that even if Minori were to hear it she would think it only another contingent of guards making their rounds. However the source of the sound was something she would have never expected to see, at least not under these circumstances. Stepping out of the shadow of the fortress' hallways and into the light of the courtyard Sarutobi Sasuke jumping monkey of the eastern devil kings was out and about. Stopping on the border between house and courtyard Sasuke quickly adjusted his headband and repositioned a few strands of hair which had fallen out of place; he had to look his best for the new boss. Taking one long, measured step into the courtyard Sasuke's lips curled up into an impish grin. "Long live the almighty Shogun rightful ruler of these lands and beloved general of the Japanese people." Sasuke bowed deeply fixing his eyes to the ground for as long as he bowed. Eventually he stood straight again and took long smooth strides out around the table so that when he stopped he was to Mori's right hand side with the table infront of him. "Pardon my intrusion great shogun Motonari Mori but I bring you a gift." With that the once great ninja knelt down and bowed himself forward. While he knelt down before his lord Sasuke reached into a pouch on his belt and drew forth a small package which he held out for his lord in both hands. "Ohagi for you and your beloved my lord, but a small part of my thanks for saving my life."

It was a lovely day. The cool breeze blew lazily, blossoms rained down all around the table almost artistically, and the sun brightened the entire courtyard in its warm light. It was perfect for a picnic, or to just spend some relaxing time with loved ones, but... somehow the girl couldn't shake off that wariness that took hold of her ever since she had stepped closer to the table. Just like she couldn't shake off the sudden flustered state when he mentioned her nervousness...She really looked as on guard and nervous as she felt? Well...it was a dumb question really, when she hadn't said a single word, her shoulders were tensed, and her gaze kept slightly narrowed in caution for anything he could be planning. Nothing escaped him, she had already seen how he seemed to think and planned ahead of anything coming his way...how he observed you and see right through you in an instant; it was probably not different this time, but... even so, the way he looked today, calmly sipping tea as if there wasn't anything better, was somewhat disarming. The blond looked away with a huff, taking a seat across of him, setting her gaze on her own hands.

It wasn't that she expected him to harm her right here and now... at least not physically; no, that wasn't what got her this nervous... it was what he could say or do that could puppetteer her into whatever he wanted or needed that scared her. He had already done so twice already...When he had completely broken her down back at the campsite and when he had made her choose between Duke's life or her own freedom... Green eyes turned back to him though, when he spoke up again, his voice keeping that calm tone, the coldness that always characterized him less noticeable now. It was completely different of what she had seen of him before, he didn't wear the usual green armor, or helmet, and he sat relaxed...he even looked...caring. Her lips curled slightly downwards, confused, not knowing if this was just a ruse...or maybe the trick had been what she had seen before? It couldn't be though...he had been so cold, so calculating and unfeeling...

And still, she found herself relaxing just a little bit, trying to ignore the tense and heavy air about her. The blond's attention was completely taken when he proposed her to ask some questions...questions that had been swirling inside of her mind for some time now. "Why..." Minori locked her gaze on his, conjuring all the courage she could, "I mean, why choose me? You were ready to kill me back then..." If it hadn't been for Woli, she could have died back during the nightmare of a camp out they had had. The girl fidgeted slightly, her mind whirling rapidly, thinking of questions...choosing only two more of all the ones she had. "My second question is-" she stopped midsentence though, a figure appearing at the corner of her eyes, making her to turn and face it. Eyes widened at the sight of the ninja, the one who had helped Amelia some times before...What was he doing here? Why was he calling Mori 'lord'? Wasn't he part of the Western Devil Kings? "Saved his life?" . . . She furrowed her eyebrows, looking at the small present before turning back to Mori, shaking her head slightly. "I didn't mean that to be a question, sorry. But, anyway...Could you...could you let me see Duke? I want to know if he's alright..."

Shogun Motonari Mori of the Mori Shogunate

"Why? the Shogun asked almost dispassionately, turning his eyes to the side and looking out across the courtyard casually, as though the question had been expected and the answer was so second-nature to him that he didn't even require thought to return to her the response that she so desired. Of course, it was around that time that the ninja from the Eastern Devil Kings arrived to bring them a gift, the young general nodding once and waving the ninja in to leave the pastries and leave. There was a story behind that, no doubt, and that the recognition in Minori's eyes did not surprise him made one to believe that he already knew about their connection as well. Was the very appearance of the ninja at all a calculated maneuver on his part? Did he want her to see that one of her friends, one of the Eastern Devil Kings that Amelia was so close to, was working as a part of his inner circle...that he had saved his life when he had every reason to leave him at the whims of a madman as a test subject to die? Minori would remember when he had been captured, though she was barely conscious at the time...she knew firsthand the dangers of that poison and what Zazi's twisted mind could conjure as punishment for him if Sasuke had stayed. And yet, Mori had saved him. Why? "You don't remember it, but this one was captured by a madman during your encounter with the World Serpent more than a week past. I felt it in the best interest of the country to liberate him, capable as he is. Unfortunately, he's not yet recovered enough to return to active duty, so we are keeping him here," Motonari answered her unspoken questions calmly, evenly, taking another idle sip of his tea as he turned his eyes back to her now, calling back to the question she had asked at first, "And with regard to your other inquiry, obvious though the answer should be, I can tell you that my sparing you that night was no act of pity. However, since then I must admit that I have had my eye on you." At that moment the lord turned slightly in his chair back towards the courtyard, the word still rolling off his tongue with a practiced, but fairly honest ease. There was nothing about him that screamed dishonesty. Though perhaps, if you were looking hard enough for a fault, that in and of itself was suspicious.

"As a general and the Lord of a decrepit clan, my personal options are limited, but my obligations are many. And as a member of the Devil King Special Forces, things that I could call my own were practically non-existent, while my obligations were the sort that kept me busy for far longer than any normal man should endure. ...When I made my move against Masamune, it was the first time I was able to step outside of my role as a strategist and take action on my own. And as luck would have it, it was there that I first saw you," the Lord explained, pausing to take a quick sip of his tea before looking over his shoulder through golden-looking eyes that reflected light like the sun, "even then, I thought inside my mind that it was a shame to waste something so fine as you were. However, my intentions at the time did not allow for exceptions. For me, however, your survival was fortuitous. After all, one of my responsibilities as the head of my clan is the prosperity and continuance of our name across the ages. Until that moment, I had never crossed paths with a single person who attracted my interest more than you. ...Do you not realize what you are?" His voice paused, his eyes turning to find hers precisely and hold them as he spoke again.

"You are a rare jewel. One that should be protected and treasured as such at all times. You are bright, intelligent, beautiful, and loved by all who come to know you. To be blunt, in this life I've never met a single woman to compare," the Lord explained easily, still holding that same cool but serious tone, as if straying or jesting in the slightest about such a thing was beyond his imagination, "And when I learned you escaped that night, I made the decision without hesitation. The one who kept you, and the one who treasured you...would be myself. That is all there is to be said on the matter." And indeed that was all he said, tipping the cup to his lips and taking a long drink of tea, replacing it on the table just as the food began to be set out on the table finally. His chopsticks between his fingers, he seemed content to wait a moment as long, smooth fingers laid out each dish one-by-one...his eyes never leaving the girl as he endured the wait.

"As for the other, I anticipated you might ask as much. ...You needn't worry about that, either. I told you before, I have no need to kill him. And so long as I intend to keep my word, I always do. That is another reason why I have arranged this meeting between the three of us...is that not accurate...Duke Devlin?"

A moment passed to let the realization sink in. The Shogun never averted his eyes from the girl, even as her thoughts sorted themselves out one-by-one, and he could see the gears just sparking to life inside of her. All she had to do was look to her right...the owner of those, long, smooth fingers...that tanned skin, the long, black locks smiling down at the two of them as he finished setting the table. It was...

"Of course, you are totally correct on that one, Lord Motonari. Though I had my trepidations, I can honestly say that you are truly a most generous host," he answered, and his smile was soft and easy...just the way it used to be...when his green eyes turned down to the girl, he saw her...but there was something missing in those eyes, a spark, a realization...or was it..."Hello" Was it? "...there..." Where was the...? "Minori.

...Where was the love?

They were cloudy thoughts, but she could recall glimpses of that day. Amelia had tried saving Sasuke, but returned to take care of her instead... So, he had been captured by that crazy clown? And...Mori had saved him. She listened to what the man in front of her said, but, somehow she couldn't help that nagging thought inside of her mind; that little something that warned her that something just seemed wrong with all of this. Though... at least he was out of that madman's clutches...so that at least meant something, didn't it? She wasn't sure anymore. Her mind had made it a habit... distrusting whatever Mori said, didn’t it? Perhaps she was wrong and…No. No, she wouldn’t even start thinking of that. Emerald orbs returned back to the ninja for a moment, just as he was ready to make his leave, still somewhat startled by the so sudden change. Then again, she couldn't really say she had spoken with Sasuke several times...she didn't know him as Ame did, and well...she didn't know what happened inside of his mind. Perhaps Mori saving him had been enough to shift his loyalty...Perhaps he was just moving along with the winning side, Who knew. But, thoughts were pushed aside as the matter about her question was resumed, the girl feeling uneasy just thinking of his answer. And... the blond wasn't sure if the uncomfortable feeling grew as the young man in front of her continue explaining his reasons, or if it was just the surprise of receiving an answer completely different of what she had expected.

No, the answer wasn't obvious. Or at least it wasn't to her. The thoughts that reside inside of Motonari Mori weren't ones she would ever guess, and she was right to think that this time wouldn't be any different. And...to listen to them, to the reasons given...the blond couldn't help the knot tightening on her stomach, the troubled knitting together of her eyebrows, or the frown on her lips. No evil plans, no random picking...they were just... normal reasons, if she could really call them that, and frankly they were hard to believe. Or, they would be, if he didn't speak with such easiness, and so honestly. The blond observed him, almost too closely, in search of anything that would tell her otherwise, without much success, and it was when his eyes found hers that the girl jumped slightly on her seat, darting her gaze away, unable to keep his. She was speechless, to say the least, and it bothered her. She shouldn't really even care about his reasons...She shouldn't wonder about his life or his thoughts...

Slender fingers fiddled with her own cup, unable to find words to respond, or just letting what she had heard sink in, raising her gaze only when the pause had extended a little more, and the silence spread around them. The food had arrived, and the girl didn't spare more than a quick glance in the direction of the one setting the plates on the table, absorbed in her own thoughts and nervousness about that could be said about her second question. Last time she had seen Duke...he had been terribly wounded; he had been left behind, and until this day, she could still see the blood, his blood, smeared on the floor and walls of the small karaoke booth. If only she could make sure his wounds got tended and that he would get better...if only she could...-Mori spoke up again, reassuring her that her boyfriend was alive, only to make the blond to shake her head, expecting him to say to forget about the matter, "But, you don't understand! I need to-" Wait...three of us? Her body froze in that instant, and her mind numbed, taking too long to understand what he had meant.

When it finally did, her movements were mechanical, head briskly turning to the other person standing just to her right...heart skipping a beat. He was here...He was here. No blood, no wounds or bruises, just the smooth, tanned skin she very well knew...the voice she could recognize anywhere...the soft smile she would never forget. He was unharmed, standing just beside her as if nothing wrong had ever happened, just as if there was nothing strange about all of this meeting. "D-Duke..." His words...his tone...It just sounded wrong. What did he mean? What was he saying?! And his eyes... perhaps it was his gaze meeting hers that finally made her crack down, the knot on her throat growing. His eyes...weren't...the ones she had known and loved. They didn't express the care that had been there before. ...Was he really seeing her...or was he glancing down at some acquaintance met once or twice...?

"...What...did you do...to him?"

Shogun Motonari Mori of the Mori Shogunate

"I healed him from his wounds. Tended to his needs and brought him back to health," the Shogun answered the girl's pained question evenly, and if she expected some sort of an evil cackle or proclamation of victory from him she would find that the ludicrously over-the-top villain she seemed to imagine him to be was still not there in favor of the calm, calculating figure that plagued their short history together...though he seemed not to take any pleasure in his words, they were merely a recounting of his actions. Was there perhaps a hint of sympathy in there for the girl as well, seeing her this way? One would have to look quite close to tell. "I have done more than just that, however. Because you seem to have such a fondness for him, and he has technically committed no crimes, I have allowed him to stay here inside of the Imperial Fortress alongside me," Mori informed her casually as Duke finished laying out the last few plates of food, nodding once in the direction of both his new lord and his old girlfriend before moving to a spot on the periphery of the courtyard and leaning against a wall in his usual relaxed fashion, "He has been given a life of luxury. He will want for nothing, and stand beside us moving forward into the new era. ...Is that not what you asked for?" He took a long, easy sip of tea as he watched her watching her former boyfriend, and if he seemed bothered by the obvious feelings inside of her expression he did not show it. He was exceptionally accepting of what he was seeing from the woman that was to be his wife, despite the obvious implications of it. It was the expression of a patient man who knew that the tides of fate were changing, the winds blowing in another direction...his own direction. And that it was by his own hands that the fates and the winds now danced.

"I've held to my end of our bargain. Duke Devlin is perfectly healthy, and he'll even be nearby where you can watch him and ensure it. You are here so that I might indulge you this and display my sincerity," the Shogun spoke as he set his cup back down on its small plate, waiting for the girl's attention to return to him at that, "However...there is a price yet to be paid for this. Once which you agreed to quite readily. I am certain you must remember it." It was with those words that he stood from his chair, setting his cup and chopsticks down at the table to stand and move slowly, in measured steps, around the table to the side at which the blond had taken her own seat. Behind him the blossoms fell like little specks, drifting back and forth from branch to grass, settling like a pink and cherry path from the table towards the walls of the fortress on any side of them, tinged by the greens of grass and the brown bark of the trees here and there. A beautiful, natural sight...with only the table and the guards and now, at her side, the shogun himself to offset it. He knelt beside her, eye-level with Minori, and he took her hand inside of his own. There was an intensity in his eye that was missing before. Something...different. It was perhaps the first genuine display of emotion (indecipherable as it was) that he had shown since she arrived, rather than that easy, impassive visage with which he could bestow gifts and strike down enemies, unflinching. "There is a war coming. Crows and Devils conspire where they believe I am not watching. However, their ranks are full of traitors," Motonari spoke again, telling her of things she had likely only suspected, if she had even thought of them at all, "I will be more than ready when the time comes. They have let their cat out of the bag, so to speak...while my secrets are guarded as the precious things that they are. ...And with them, I will overwhelm my enemies to become the unrivaled power in this country. I will not be the one who dies."

Calmly lifting her hand, the shogun set the back of it softly against his lips. It lasted for only a moment, chaste and formal as it was, before he released her hand and stood back to his full height once more. Looking down upon her, he looked as cunning and intelligent, intimidating as ever...only, perhaps for now, she would know that this intimidation was not for her. "When all my enemies are fallen, and this war comes to its end, I intend to retire to the lands of Chugoku. On that day, when the future of the Mori Clan is secure, I intend to hold you to your word. For your own happiness, and our future, you should cast aside all doubt that this will come to pass. ...You are to be my treasure. I expect that in time, you will feel the same about me."

"Come, Duke. I must return to my work," he spoke again as he turned away from the blond finally, moving towards the exit with his newest member of his regime in-tow. Sasuke would likely not be far behind him, and the Seven Spears were somewhere about as well. He was always well-guarded, all the country having become puppets bound by his strings. Or so it would seem. "Minori Koroko...your friend Suoh will take you wherever it is you wish to go. However, if you wish to remain in the Estate, I would welcome you. ...Do what pleases you." He turned his eyes from her at that and the guards opened the door back to the insides of the Estate. He moved without hesitation, entourage and all, and when the doors closed again as he passed through them he was gone. And Minori, still seated at the table, was alone once more.
