The ambulance skidded to a stop outside the hospital and the door flew open. The paramedics quickly got the gurney out of the truck and raced toward the hospital. They soon broke out into a quick run, racing down the hallway. The patient lay still, her eyes closed. Blood was still coming out of the one bullet wound in her chest as she was raced down the hospital hallway. One of the paramedics applied pressure to the open bullet wound on her chest as they continued toward their desination. "One GSW to the chest," one of the paramedics said as they reached one of the other doctors. They had soon reached the opperation rooms and she was quickly rushed into surgery.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The world was dark. Everything was dark. Her breaths came in slow breaths and the only noise in the room was the beeping of the moniters. She wasn't sure how long she had been asleep for but the last thing she remembered was being shot... She had been shot. After that, she just remembered bits and pieces. Mainly she remembered the feelings the pain, the fear, the panic, and the... happiness? She had been at a funral, her captains funeral. She had been giving a speech when she had been shot. She had been talking about her captain, who had died to protect her. He had died making his final stand while she was helpless to do anything. She had always expected to get shot as a cop but it wasn't something you thought about till it happened. In the instant the bullet hit her, she thought she was going to die. It felt like she was going to die. There had been so many things she had yet to do before she died. Like solve her mother's murder. They had been close, so close. Yet once again he had slipped from their grasp. If only Montgomery had given her the name of the man that had paid for the hit. She had just wanted a name. However, he died before he could tell her. Then, she had almost died almost a few days later. However, she knew she was alive right now. She could faintly hear a beeping sound in the distance along with her breathing. She wasn't in pain anymore and she felt relaxed. Her thoughts drifted back to the moment she was shot and one name came to mind. Castle. He had been right next to her at the funeral. He had called her name. He had tried to push her out of the way. He had been right over her as she faded into the darkness. He had said something to her before she had lost conscious. At the moment, what he said escaped her. It was like that one second of her memory was cloudy but she could remember the happiness his words ahd broguht over her. Overpowering the fear for a split seconds.
"Castle... the word fell from her lips as, slowly, Kate Beckett opened her eyes. The lights blinded her for a moment and she blinked a few times, her eyes adjusted to the bright lights. She glanced around the room slowly, trying to see where she was. The room was unfamiliar but it appeared to be a hospital room. A few needles were in her arm while her vitals were being monitored. She took a deep breath and tried to sit up, along to have pain in her chest. She slowly relaxed into the bed and looked toward the door. It wasn't long before a door open and a nurse walked in. She stopped in her tracks as she spotted Kate awake. She quickly turned around and headed out into the hall again only to return a few seconds later. She flipped through the file in her hand, which Kate guessed was her own. She remained silent until she noticed how empty the room was, something was missing. The room was empty, beside herself and the nurse. For some reason, she had always expected that, if anything was to happen, she'd wake up to find him in a chair beside her. He was always by her side, always, and she had thought he would have been sitting beside her right now. She glanced up at the nurse and opened her mouth. "Where is he?" she asked, her voice ragged and hoarse. The nurse glanced up and looked over at her. She closed the file and walked over to the side of her bed. She seemed middle aged with short, curly blonde hair and ice blue eyes. She smiled slightly at Beckett, like she was trying to make her feel relax and comfortable. "Detective Beckett, you were just shot less then twenty four hours ago. Now the doctor will be with you in a few minutes so if you will just relax I will-" she told her but Beckett quickly cut her off.
"Where is he?" she asked, louder this time. Once again, she tried to sit up and ignored the pain in her chest. The nurse looked down at her and placed the file down. "Detective Beckett, please relax. You've just been shot," she said and Kate slowly relaxed again as the door opened and the doctor entered. She reconized him right away. Josh. He smiled at her and motioned for the nurse to leave, which she did right away. He came to the side of her bed and stared down at her. Kate smiled up at him and sighed. She had met Josh while Castle had been in the Hamptons over the summer. They had gotten along well and soon he had asked her out for coffee after work. She had agreed since she hadn't expected Castle to come back to the precient. He was a good guy and he cared for her but he was rarely around. Either he had to work late or she had to work late. Besides, things had been different between them ever sicne Castle came back. "Well Kate, it looks like you're going to be alright. The wound came close to the heart but luckily didn't hit it straight on. You were really lucky. You may have some pain in your chest for a few days but you're going to be as good as new in a few days," he said with a smile. Kate shifted slightly in the bed and glanced around the room again, her eyes landing on the door. He should have been here by now. Maybe he was busy or had gone home to take a shower or something. Maybe Alexis needed something and that was why he wans't here. "Kate?" Josh said, calling her attention back into the present. She turned her head toward him and remained silent for a few moments.
"Where is he, Josh? Where's Castle?" she asked. Everybody looks like a killer to me, Castle. It's a job requirement.
This isn't one of your books, Castle. Out here, we find a guy standing over a body with a gun, He's usually the guy who did it.
Screw this up, and I'll kill you. Okay, Castle, but it's accompany and observe, Not participate and annoy.
I must have done something terrible to be punished with you.

"Kate! Kate, stay with me... Kate, I love you..." The words echoed inside famous crime novelist Richard Castle's head as his vision swam. One moment, he had he cradled in his arms, his eyes locked on her beautiful green and gold flecked hazel ones. The next thing he knew he was being tugged away by his mother and his daughter, staring blankly as the paramedics rushed to get Kate onto the gurnery and to the hospital. Rick was sent into a spiral of shock; all voices sounded distant and foggy. He couldn't think straight. All he could see was flashed of his own life, all their experiences together... And now, it could all just poof and disappear. Rick felt himself being pushed down into a chair while he could hear distant shouts. As he turned his head to focus his distant and glazed eyes, his jaw was still open. It was like his whole body stopped. Rick slowly blinked, trying to focus his vision. He could recognize some of the voices as he heard commands being shouted. As his vision grew less and less foggy, he could make out the concerned faces of his mother and daughter, their mouths moving but making no sound. Suddenly, like a blast of hot air, voices came rushing at him. "Darling! Richard!" "Dad! Dad!! DAD!!" Rick shook his head, trying to clear a sudden headache that had come on. "Where is she? Where are they taking her?!" Rick asked, his voice escalating as he struggled to stand up. His eyes grew wild as he tried to look around his mother and daughter, trying to catch sight of Kate.
"Darling, please calm down. You haven't been responsive for quite some time now. You're in shock. Beckett's on her way to the hospital. They're putting her in surgery right away to extract the bullet. Really, darling, you must calm down," Martha Rodgers explained quickly, her blue-green eyes focused on her son's face. She drew a hand down Rick's cheek, the other clutching Alexis's hand. Tear streaks ran down his daughter's face, and instinctively, he wrapped them both in a hug. Both for his comfort and their own. Alexis buried her face in her father's shoulder while Martha patted her son's back, After a shaky sigh, he released them. "And Ryan and Esposito? Where are they?" Richard asked, his voice gravelly and a little hoarse. Martha looked over Rick's shoulder and nodded that way. "They and some other units went after the shooter. They are sending at least three full units out to search the whole grounds and the area around it. I'm sure they will catch the shooter, darling. Lanie is waiting down the road a bit with the car to head down to the hospital. Come on, dear," Martha cooed in her motherly way. Rick stood and set his shoulders square, then wrapped his arms around his girls. He took a deep breath and glanced behind him, catching sight of Ryan and Esposito. They both saw him and nodded, and Rick nodded slightly in response. The man then turned back and started trudging toward the car with Martha and Alexix under his arm.
What seemed like eternities later, the small trio reached the long black car that Lanie had waiting for them. The medical examiner, dressed in a black dress for the captain's funeral, also had tear streaks down her face and a firmly pressed worry line on her forehead. Her black eyes were wet and worried, as her purse was clutched between her hands in a death grip. Rick nodded to her as Martha pulled open the door. Alexis slid in first, then Martha. Rick motioned for Lanie to hop in, then glanced behind him. Ryan and Esposito were jogging toward the car with their hats in their hands. Rick slid into the car beside his mother and his daughter while Lanie sat opposite them. Soon enough, detectives Kevin Ryan and Javier Esposito hopped into the car. Esposito took his place beside Lanie, placing aan arm gingerly around her. The medical examiner laid her hair against his shoulder, but her face was still etched with worry, as was everyone else's. Rick glanced around the car with dull eyes, his throat tight. Everyone held the same expression: worried for the worst. The car ride to the hospital felt like a million years and was in complete silence, except for the occasional sniffle.
As the car pulled up to the hospital, everyone hurried to scramble out. Castle hopped out first and held the door for everyone else. Once everyone was out, he slammed the door shut, and, as a group, they all ventured inside the white building. Scents of medicines and different sterility drugs soon overpowered Rick's senses. He hurried to the front desk, his mother and daughter staying back. "Kate Beckett. We have to see her. We need to know where her room is!" Castle demanded, his hands growing into fists. Ryan stepped up beside his and laid a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it slightly to tell Castle to back off a bit. "We're colleagues of hers and were witnesses to the shooting. Could you please tell us where she is?" Ryan asked the secretary a bit more calmly then Castle had. The girl, who looked no over twenty five, pushed her glasses up on her nose and shuffled through some paperwork. "Um, I only have records of her being put into surgery only a few minutes ago. I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait here until I can call down to the room and find out where she is going to be placed," the secretary answered helplessly, her brown eyes apologetic.
Castle took a step back, his hair falling down near his eyes. Ryan nodded and thanked the girl before turning back to the group. "We're just going to have to wait and see," he announced, his voice cracking slightly. Shock registered on everyone's faces. Soon enough, though, everyone had taken a seat. Castle was one of the last, because he was pacing back and forth. Eventually, after much pleading by his mother and daughter, he sat down in one of the hospital's chairs. But he fidgeted. He couldn't sit still. Doors whooshed open and in flew a blond haired and blue eyed girl, her eyes round and searching. Ryan jumped up and enveloped her in his arms. Jenny. She quickly asked what had happened and Ryan explained, only to have shock register on his fiancee's (wife's?) face. They both sat down again, hands clutched together. The phone rang at the desk and after a moment's conversation, the secretary hung up the phone. "Um, hello? If you would like, I was just notified that Detective Kate Beckett was assigned to room 32C in the west wing on the fifth floor. You can't go in yet, but there are waiting chairs in each hallyway," the girl called, pointing toward an elevator.
The group simultaneously jumped up and nodded, and with Castle in the lead, rushed to the elevator. Ryan, the ever gentleman, thanked the girl again and they all crammed into the one elevator. After a mile long elevator ride, the doors dinged and opened at a snail's pace. Castle was the first out, followed by the two detectives and Lanie. The other women followed quickly, eyees wide. As the hallway stretched out in front of them, the doors whizzed by. After what seemed like a thousand miles, they finally reached Beckett's room. However, the door was closed. As the group found a row of chairs close to her door, a nurse emerged from the room wearing a weary smile. Castle, who had been holding his head in his hands, looked up at the nurse. So did everyone else. Smiling brightly, the nurse announced, "She's stable. The doctor is in there with her right now, but I don't know when she will be allowed any visitors. You are alloowed to stay here if you wish." With that, the nurse nodded and headed in the opposite direction. A collective sigh emitted from everyone. She was safe. She was stable. She was definitely a fighter; she pulled through. I'm a wise a**, not a jack a**.

Kate watched as Josh’s face fell at her words. The slight shift in his expression and posture would escape the normal eyes but Beckett was a trained detective. She was trained to notice even the smallest of changes in someone’s body because that could make or break a case. You could tell a lot by someone’s posture and expression, including if they were guilty or not. Right now, it was clear that Josh wasn’t happy that she had asked for Castle right away. Beckett smiled softly at him, trying a reassure him, and touched his hand gently. Josh took her hand and held it for a few seconds. She could still see the hurt in his eyes but he was trying to hide it. He released her hand and ran a hand through his hair. “I’m not sure, Kate. I was immediately called into surgery when you arrived to do your operation. I can check if he’s here,” Josh told her calmly and Kate smiled. He was really a great guy and he loved her. She just wished he was around more so they could spend more time together. She nodded silently and watched as he left the room, probably off to find Castle. She hoped Castle would be waiting in the hospital but she still wished he had been sitting by her side when she woke up. However, that was in the past and right now she just wanted to get better and get out of this place. Beckett had always hated hospitals, ever since she was a little kid. She had once needed stiches and the doctors had wanted her to stay overnight but Kate gave them such a hard time that they just let her go. She hoped Josh would let her go soon, so she could go home and sleep in her own bed.
She figured that she wouldn’t be allowed to work for a few days but Kate could deal with that as long as she wasn’t stuck in a hospital. Beckett sighed and glanced around the room again. She hoped her father was okay. She knew he had been at the funeral, he’d come to support her, and he was probably worried out of his mind. She couldn’t really blame him after what had just happened. She’d be worry if she had watched Esposito, Ryan, or Castle get shot. There was no question about that. Probably as soon as she was allowed to have visitors, her father would be right by her side making sure she was okay. Beckett closed her eyes and tried to relax but her mind wouldn’t settle. It kept replaying the scene of the funeral. She should have seen the guy, she shouldn’t have let her guard down, and she should have worn a damn vest. She had known someone was after her and yet she had gone to the funeral unprepared. Probably because someone didn’t normally expect get shot in broad daylight or at a funeral with lots of people. Either way, she knew someone was after her because of her mother’s case. However, that didn’t mean she was giving up. She was going to find that killer, even if it was the last thing she did. Everybody looks like a killer to me, Castle. It's a job requirement.

Footsteps could be heard pounding down a hallway about five hundred feet from where Castle, his family, Esposito, Ryan, Lanie, and Jenny sat, their faces drawn anxiously. From the other hallway came a red-faced Jim Beckett, breathing heavily. Castle jumped to his feet, waving him over. Detective Beckett's father hurried over, trying to catch his breath. He looked at the door they were all staring at the questioned Castle with his eyes. Castle nodded toward the door, worry lines etched into his forehead. Beckett's father's eyes were haunted and hollow with anxiety. His daughter had just been shot. But at least she was safe now. Jim took one last glance at the group before pushing the door handle down and throwing open the door to the room. He caught sight of Kate's boyfriend, Josh, rising to leave. Then, with eyes wide, he let out a shuddering breath and rushed to his daughter's side. He grabbed her hand and squeezed it to the point of nearly crushing it, wrapping his arms around his daughter and burying his face into her shoulder. Silent sobs racked the man's body; sobs of relief. Jim squuezeed his daughter tightly, not ever wanting to let go. But, after he felt like she was crushing her, he reluctantly let go. He held her hand gently and studied her, his fatherly eyes soft. Lines had deepened in his forehead, and his eyes glistened. "God, Katie.... You scared me to death. I could have lost you! I couldn't.... Just couldn't l-" Jim's voice caught, and he blinked quickly as tears threatened to spill over. His blue eyes lingered on his daughter's face as he swallowed a lump in his throat.
Out in the hallway, Castle had begun his pacing again. While everyone tried to get him to sit down and just be calm, the man refused. He wanted to give Mr. Beckett his space with his daughter, but he really needed to see her. What if she thought he had abandoned her? What if she had expected to wake up to him next to her? What if's consumed Castle's mind. But just as he felt like he was going to explode, he nearly ran into Josh. Taken aback, Castle took a surprised step back. His eyes searched the doctor's face as everyone rose behind Castle. Each and every one of them had the same expectant look on their faces. Each of them were waiting for the news that could make or break them. Yes, she was stable, but what was going to happen to her? What had gone on in te surgery? Questions, questions, questions!
"C-Can we go and see her?" Castle stammered, his voice a bit shaly but his eye contact never wavering with Josh. I'm a wise a**, not a jack a**.

The door had barely shut behind Josh when it opened to reveal Beckett's father. Beckett smiled softly at her father and let out a soft gasp as he pulled her into a bone-crushing hug. She hugged him back the best she could, happy to see him. She was slightly relieved when she was released from his hug, since she had been beginning to find it hard to breath. She remained silent and smiled at her father. "I know, Dad. I'm sorry... I should have been wearing a vest... or been more observant... or..." Beckett said, trailing off in the end. He eyes once again found themself staring past her father and toward the now closed door. she wondered if Castle was sitting outside waiting to come in. She hoped he was, he better be. She smiled to herself and glanced back at her father. Her chest still felt swore but she was able to ignore it now, though she didn't want to try sitting up again.
Outside, Josh looked at Castle and the other people behind him. Mr. Beckett had already gone into the room and he knew everyone else was eager to see Beckett as well. He cleared his throat before speaking. "Miss Beckett is going to be fine. I'm sure she'd like to have some visitors, so you may go in one at a time. But don't stress her too much, she needs to stay calm and relaxed," he told them before walking down the hallway toward his next patient. He wanted to stay with Kate but he had work to do. He had already disobeyed procedure by doing an opperation when he knew the patient, he couldn't afford to get into trouble again today.
