The morning light slowly slipped through the windows of the small room. The room was fairly empty, only a bed, a desk, and a closet were in the room. A young woman rolled over in the bed and let out a groan. She buried her face against the pillow and kept her eyes closed. The last thing she wanted to do right now was wake up. She simply wanted to fall back asleep and pretend she was back at headquarters with her squad, who would soon wake her up with their load voices. That, however, wasn’t possible for twenty year old Kayden Bluestone. She was in a new room, miles away from her fellow rebels, and she was in this alone, except for the minimum reports she made to her commanders. It had been exactly four years since her life was completely turned upside down and she went from living a simply life to living a life of war. Ever since World War III ended twenty years ago, the world had been under the control of the Empire, ruled by the previous emergency dictator of England. The man had managed to rise to power during the war and had taken control of every government in the world by the time the war ended. He had claimed that the world would all be more peaceful if they were all ruled by one government. One that was fair, just, and gave freedom and independence to all. Kayden couldn’t help but roll her eyes at that thought. The rules of the Empire only benefited one person, and that was the Emperor himself. For years, people lived in silence as the Empire rose and it had soon become clear that what was developing was not what the Emperor had promised at the starts. Governors were elected to watch over the old countries and made weekly reports to the Emperor in England, the world’s new capital city.

It was seven years ago when people finally took a stand against the unjust government. Kayden had been thirteen at the time but had learned of the rising rebellion quickly. She had listened intently as the Rebellion grew in strength and numbers and longed to join in on the fight. However, she had been thirteen going on fourteen at that time and that, and other reasons, prevented her from joining the fight. So she had stayed loyal to the Empire, or at least pretended. She had always hated the ways of the Empire, even when she was very young. Kayden had been born the year the Empire rose to power. She had never experienced how the world used to be but she knew it must have been better then how things were now. She bet the world had problems, nothing was perfect, but the Empire was far worse. It was when she was sixteen that she finally joined the Rebellion. She never regretted joining the Rebellion but she wished she had joined on different circumstances. Her real name wasn’t Kayden Bluestone. She was born with the name Rachel Whitestone and she had been a governor’s daughter. Her father had been the first governor of America and she had been his only child. She had experienced all the way of the Empire, from how the richest were treated to how the poorest were treated. She had been extremely close to her parents, even if they didn’t always understand her at times. They had been the main reason she had been unable to join the Rebellion, because she didn’t want to betray her family. No matter how bad the Empire was, Kayden was loyal to her family above anything else and she would never betray them. Besides, she had doubted that the Rebellion would have even accepted her for one reason. Her gender.

One of the rules enforced early in the rise of the Empire was its view on women. It was clear that the Emperor had poor views on women and that was easily observed in his rules. Women were quickly stripped of their jobs and turned into house wife’s again. It was like they were going back to the old days. Women weren’t allowed to take jobs other than a job as a maid or a nanny. They had no voice in society and weren’t allowed to voice their opinion about laws. They were looked at as property, things to be owned, or that was how Kayden saw it. If a woman went unmarried, she became a shame to her family and to the Empire. It was worse being a governor’s daughter than anything else, though. Kayden had grown up in high society with her mother and father. She was lucky that her father didn’t share the same views on women as most men and he only married once, to her mother. Kayden watched as other men married multiple times but her father only did it once. Her father and mother always got along well and Kayden loved both of them. However, due to being the daughter of a governor, Kayden was expected to be an example to all women belong her. She was to speak only when spoken too, do as she was told, and keep her thoughts to herself. This never flew well with the blonde haired girl. She always seemed to be breaking those rules by speaking out whenever she felt like it, arguing when she was told to do something, and she never kept her thoughts to herself. Do to this, she never made friends with the other children of the governors since she was such a shame to her family. Her mother tried to make her in a “proper” lady but everything always went in on ear and out the other. It frustrated her mother, who was an extremely proper lady, and the two argued often.

Kayden slowly opened her brown eyes, waking from her thoughts. She rolled over and stared up at the white ceiling. She let out a sigh before sitting up and getting out of bed. She ran a hand through her blonde hair and walked over to her closet. She opened it slowly and looked around at the cloths on the hooks. She groaned at the sight before her. All that lined the walls of the closest were dresses, shirts, and acceptable shirts. Another thing that had changed with the rise of the Empire was what women could and couldn’t wear. Men could wear anything they wanted but women were only allowed to wear skirts that fell below their knee, shirts that covered their upper arm, and dresses that followed both those rules along with either flats or high heels. Kayden, who had always been a tomboy, had always hated wearing the clothes she had to wear. It was like torture for her. That was why she had been so thankful that the Rebellion didn’t care what she wore. For four straight years Kayden had been able to wear T-shirts, pants, and boots and sneakers every single day. It had been haven after being forced to wear “proper” clothes for sixteen years. The clothes before her were almost all the same colors, different shades or black and gray, but Kayden didn’t mind. At least the Empire wasn’t making her wear anything pink or purple. Grabbing a shirt and a shirt, Kayden slipped out of the T-shirt and shorts she had slept in before getting into her work cloths. She figured she’d have to wear the nightgown the Rebellion had supplied her with from now on but she had wanted to sleep in normal cloths one more time.

She quickly dressed and then looked at herself in the mirror. She ran a brush through her blonde hair before staring at herself. She had changed so much in the past four years, she didn’t even look the same nor did she have the same name. It had happened so quickly that Kayden didn’t even know how it all happened. All she remembered was being arrested one day and being brought all the way from their home in America to England. She was put in a cell with her parents and soon the torture began. She had heard rumors that the Empire tortured its prisoners but she had never considered it to be true until it happened to her. She remembered every little thing about the torture, but the pain was the biggest thing. It turned out that her parents hadn’t been as loyal to the Empire as they had claimed to be, they had been rebels. Despite the situation, Kayden had felt so happy to hear that her parents were fighting for the right thing. Yet it didn’t last long. Kayden had expected to be tortured and interrogated by the Emperor himself but had found that it had been his son doing the torture instead. She would never forget him as he stood before them, asking them questions and inflicting pain when they wouldn’t answer. Since she hadn’t even known her parents had been rebels, Kayden wasn’t able to answer any questions yet the most pain had been inflicted to her. Her parents had been strong, not saying anything even when the emperor’s son tortured her before their very eyes. She had stayed strong, not letting them see any weakness from her. They had been kept there for about a week before her parents were killed. She probably would have been dead too if it hadn’t been for the rebel spy in the room at the moment. He had saved her life and managed to get her out of the prison before it was too late. She had been taken to the Rebellion’s base and recovered from her ordeal. Shortly afterwards, Rachel Whitestone was declared dead to the public. However, the day Rachel died was the day Kayden was born. She joined the Rebellion as their first, and only, female member and her identity was kept a secret. She even dyed her short brown hair blonde and let it grow out. When she went into battle, she disguised herself as a boy and used fake names so no one would ever discover her gender and link it to her old life. This also made her perfect for undercover work, like this mission.

A knock on her door snapped her out of her thoughts and Kayden glanced over her shoulder. “Come in,” she called and smoothed out her shirt. A young woman about her age walked into the room and looked her over. Her face, which had been in a welcoming smile, soon fell into a frown. Kayden crossed her arms and eyes the girl. She was pretty, her skin perfectly toned and her hair pulled back into a neat bun. She wore a light gray dress with white high heels along with some make-up. Her green eyes looked Kayden over and she shook her head slightly. Kayden caught every movement the girl made and she could tell that the stranger wasn’t impressed with her. “You must be Kayden, the new handmaid. I’m Daphne and you’ll meet the other handmaids later,” the girl greeted and tried her best to smile. Kayden simply eyed her but didn’t return the fake smile. She turned away from her without a word and turned to fix her sheets. She took her time, just to annoy Daphne. She had met girls just like her has her time as a governor’s daughter and she didn’t want to deal with them. She hadn’t asked to be selected for this undercover mission but, when the leaders of the Rebellion explained what it was for, Kayden knew she couldn’t refuse. As acting to be a handmaid for the Emperor, she’d be able to get close to everything that went on. The goal was to get close enough that she’d be able to hear what the Emperor was planning and secrets that would lead to the downfall of the Empire. Daphne coughed loudly, as if to get her attention, and Kayden looked toward her, frowning.

“Look, you don’t have to pretend to like me. I get it, I’m not like normal girls so don’t go pretending you like me. I can see right through it,” she said firmly and glared at the girl slightly. Daphne look a step back, as if she was shocked that another woman would speak to her in such a way. Most women had a proper way of speaking but not Kayden. She said what she wanted to, not what people thought was “proper” and what wasn’t. Daphne narrowed her eyes and turned to leave. As she reached the door, she turned around and looked at Kayden. “Hurry up and get ready, you are going to assist Penelope in serving breakfast to the royal family,” she said before walking out the room and closing the door behind her. Kayden sighed and glanced at herself one more time. This was the beginning of her mission. She knew failure wasn’t an option since. If she was caught, she was dead. Taking a deep breath, she opened her door and walked down the hallway to the kitchen. She didn’t see any of the other maids yet and decided to get something to eat. She opened the fridge and glanced at it, only to find nothing appealing. Sighing, Kayden grabbed an apple and began to eat it. She leaned against the counter and stared at the clock. She figured that Penelope would be down soon and she’d instruct her where to go, hopefully. The last thing Kayden wanted to do was to screw up and then draw attention to herself. She simply had to stay in the shadows, out of the way, and just catch all the information she could. The better she acted, the better she chance at getting more information. Kayden ran a hand through her hair and began to hum softly to herself. Her gaze drifted to the one window in the room and she gazed out at the city. There were no trees in sight and it only reminded her of how much she missed the Rebel Base. They were hidden deep in a forest and the view out the windows was incredible. Here all there was in sight was building, streets, and more building. What she wouldn’t give to be back with her boys but she had a job to do and she was determined to do it.
