The beginning of the story
The sun was setting over the horizon, casting a wondrous glow across the ocean. The small port town of Alandria was peaceful at this time of night. It always has been, and probably always would be. By this time everyone had already headed home for the night. Although this was one of the safest harbor's in all the continents, considering the most notorious jail was located here, the fear of pirates attacking was still very real.
A young girl with long, dark hair sat there, eyes distant as her feet grazed the top of the water. A small smile played across her face as she thought of a different life on the open sea. With a sigh she stood up and brushed her skirt. It was about time that she got home. Her mother would be worried about her.
Before she could fully turn away, she stopped. Was that a ship she saw coming close? Her eyes widened as she began to back up. Even from her spot she could see the pirate flag sailing in the wind. With her hair flying behind her, she hurried home. Already the bells were ringing. The guards had seen the ship.
As she reached home, she slammed the door shut behind her and slid the bolt into place. "Mom!? Mom where are you?"
"Aurelia?" Her mother stepped into the room. "Was that the bells I heard?"
"Mom, it's pirates!" Aurelia said hurriedly. "I saw it as I was leaving the harbor. What do we do?" She stared at her mother silently for several moments. "Mom?"
"No time Aurelia." Her mother grabbed her arm and pulled her through the small house. I knew this day would come, I just didn't think it would happen so soon. There are things that I haven't told you. Things that you need to know."
"Mom, I don't understand," Aurelia gasped as she followed her mother. "Please, tell me what is going on?"
"You're father--he is a pirate. He's a good man Aurelia. It's his brother that we have to worry about. He..." She stopped when there was a loud banging on the door. "In here!" She pushed Aurelia into a hidden door and slammed it back shut. Aurelia listened from the other side of the door as voices filled the room. A man's voice broke out over the rest.
"Fiona, my dear Fiona. It has been a while. Tell me, where is your daughter? Where is my niece?"
"I will not tell you anything Brady. You think I will let you take my daughter from me? Turn her against her father? I don't think so."
Aurelia listened as a scuffle ensued, her hands covering her mouth. There was the sound of a something biting into flesh, a gasp and then a shout of rage. "You...will never know," she heard her mother gasp. "You will never find her."
"Damn it," Brady muttered. "Search the town! Find the girl!"
Aurelia waited several moments before leaving the hiding spot her mother and thrust her into. She gasped and stumbled back when she saw her mother's body on the floor. "Momma..." Tears sprang to her eyes as she hurried from the house. She needed to get out of here, find somewhere to go. The only thing that she could think to do was go to the harbor. The pirates were looking for her, but there were in the town. She needed to find someplace to hide. More than likely they had already searched there when they first came in.
"Need to find a hiding place," Aurelia muttered to herself as she hurried down the dock. Before she could move any further arms wrapped around her, pulling her into the shadows. A hand covered her mouth as she tried to scream. She twisted in the arm, trying to break free.
"Aurelia! Stop! It's me, Jonathon! I am your father." A man whispered in her ear.
Aurelia stopped struggling and slowly she was allowed to turn around. She looked up and her breath caught in her throat. Her mother had always said she looked just like her father, and she hadn't been lying. "Dad?" She said softly.
"Thank the God's," Jonathon said as he hugged her. "Where is your mother? Where is Fiona?"
Tears sprang to Aurelia's eyes again. "They killed her. The other pirates. She's dead. I saw her body..."
Jonathon cursed under his breath. "We can't stay here. Come, we will go to my ship, get out of here. We need to be long gone before Brady realizes I was here, and you are gone."
Moment's later Aurelia stood on the deck of her father's pirate ship, watching as the town she grew up in grew smaller as they got further away. She would never see it again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unknown to Aurelia, she had an admirer in that town. A young man whose father was the captain of the guard. When the pirates attacked and Aurelia was found to be missing, it was his passion to also become an officer. That way he could capture pirates if they cam near, and hopefully find the girl who got away.
You are that young man. It has been six years since that fateful night. And now one of the most feared pirates is held in your prison. Jonathon Shaw, the pirate. Unknown to you, Aurelia is returning to break her father out of prison. Although she hasn't been in the town in six years, she still remembers her way around. Your goal is to follow the pirate ship to get to her, with the aid of two of your best friends. What happens from there is yet to be told...
GN: xDrillbit Taylor CN: Michael Lane Age: 19 Gender: Male Appearance: Michael Lane stands nearly six feet tall, with a skinny and scrawny frame that does not convey the strength he truly has. His eyes are a bright, icy blue, his thin and angular face framed by an untidy mess of straw-colored hair. Bio: Michael always had a special place in his heart for that girl he often saw in town, the one with the beautiful dark hair that lived only with her mother. He often saw her sitting in the harbor, staring off to sea, and he would admire her as if she was an angel dropped from the heavens. When she disappeared, it was all over the town, and Michael was distraught. It was rumored that she had been captured by the pirates, so he made it his duty to attend the naval officers' school so that he could one day captain his own ship and hunt the seas, looking for his lost love. Other: Michael's father, though approving his son's decision to become a naval officer, does not approve of his reasons. He believes his son's chases after this girl are foolish, just the thing a young man would do. He tries all he can to deter his son from pursuing the navy for this reason.
((yay!! awesome! I love it. And now to start))
Aurelia stood at the deck of the ship, watching as her childhood town came into view. An hour earlier she had ordered the flag, indicating that this was a pirate ship, taken down. She didnt want to attract undo attention to them so soon.
She had never thought she would see this place again--not since the attack six years ago. But now she had to go back. Somehow her father, Jonathon, had been captured and taken to the jailhouse there.
"Aurelia, the men would like their orders."
Aurelia turned and smiled at the man who was her father's closest friend, and had quickly become the lovable uncle she had never had. "Everyone is to stay on board Sam. I alone will go ashore. It may have been six years since I have been here, but I remember the town and how to get to the jail." She wore skin tight black pants with a maroon belt, a black corset type top, black gloves that cut off at the knuckles and sleeves that went all the way to several inches below her shoulders. Because of this she pulled on a cloak that covered her clothing, as well as to hide her swords. It also had a hood that she pulled up over her head.
"Very well, " Sam said with a nod. Before she would walk down the ramp and onto the dock, he touched her arm. "Be careful Aurelia. No doubt the guards here are going to be on alert."
"Don't worry Sam, I will be as careful as I can be. Remember to keep the ship ready to sail. We are going to need to make a fast getaway." Aurelia gave him a quick smile before going down the ramp and disappearing into the town.
The young man stood tall and thin, his frame ramrod straight as he inspected the prisoner before him. He was Michael Lane, ship's ensign on his father's royal navy vessel, and behind the bars sat the infamous pirate Jonathon Shaw. Michael Lane, hands clasped behind his back, regarded the prisoner with interest. He had never aided in the capture of a pirate before, as he had only been with the navy for a short time, so he felt strangely proud as he studied the man before him. Michael had been on the ship and had aided in defeating the enemy ship, manning the gun crews for a short time before his father ordered him to the deck to manage the boarding of the pirate vessel. The men celebrated when they learned just who they had captured aboard the ship. But it had not been Shaw's ship, however; it was the ship of an entirely different pirate group, a load of novices. It was likely that Shaw had just been talking some sort of terms with them when he was captured, but those terms remained unknown. It had been a week since Shaw's capture, and the man had not spoken a word. He only moved to eat and relieve himself- he was still at all other times, and showed no inclination to speak when addressed. It was likely a matter of shame for the man, being a pirate captain and all, and Michael couldn't help but feel slightly rude at the way he gawked. So he strode quietly up to the bars, sweeping his cocked hat from his head as he figured he should, even if the man was a lawless pirate. "Would you like anything, sir? Food, a book, some rum?" Michael was trying to be polite and cordial to the prisoner, but was not rewarded with a response. Michael stood there for an awkward minute, hands clasped behind his back as he waited for some sort of an answer; the prisoner remained stonily silent. His eyes were cast towards the ground, his fists clenched in his lap. He would yield no answer. Feeling slightly foolish, Michael backed slowly away from the bars, returning his hat to his head. "Er, if you need anything, just... just say something, eh?" And before he could make himself feel any more foolish for talking to someone who would not talk back, Michael left the room to head to his small office in the front.
((I took a bit of liberty in saying that Shaw was on another ship, for I am not sure how he would have been captured while on the same ship as Aurelia without her knowing.))
((it's cool ^_^ sounds like a good idea to me.))
It didn't take Aurelia long to arrive at the jail, and exactly on time. It was meal time, meaning that there would only be one guard at the moment. She smirked and shook her head as she slipped through the entry of the jail and silently found her way around. She lowered the hood of her cloak as she neared the front office. She peeked through the doorway and saw a young man in there. He looked oddly familiar, but she just shook off the feeling and reached in the doorway, silently taking the keys that hung on the hook. This was almost too easy.
Before the young man could turn around, Aurelia was out of sight and heading towards the cells. It didn't take her long to find her father. She smirked and leaned against the bars slightly as she inserted the key. "Well It's hard to imagine that you were captured and brought here of all places." Aurelia made sure to open the door slowly so it wouldn't make any noise.
Jonathon looked up and gave a slight grin at the sight of his daughter. "Well it took you long enough to get here." He stood up and dusted his clothes off. "I was beginning to tire of not talking to anyone here. Their conversation is just...prattle."
"Yes, of course," Aurelia said as she locked the cell door once her father was out. "We need to get out of here. Don't want to be caught here by a bunch of guards coming back from lunch. I'm vaguely surprised there aren't a couple more keeping watch than that young man I caught a glimpse of as I was slipping past the office."
"Here, I'll take the keys," Jonathon said softly as he lead the way out. "Let's give the young man back his keys." He moved swiftly through the jail and stopped in the doorway of the office. "Here, thought you might want your keys back. I imagine you're gonna have a time explaining this one to your superiors." Jonathon grinned and tossed the keys. He hurried off before he could see the young man's reaction.
"Yeah, better luck next time," Aurelia said with a wink as she followed after her father, quickly disappearing out of the jail.
~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, as Aurelia was breaking her father out of jail, Sam and several others of the crew had moved to the only navy ship in harbor, and made it to where it couldn't be sailed for at least a week. Now they could get a safe distance away. Now they could get home without anyone following them.
((bwah ha ha...so it makes it a little harder which causes michael to get two friends to get a small boat and chase after the pirate ship!!! tee-hee...spur of the moment decision!)

((Haha, excellent decision! XD This'll be terribly fun!))
Michael sat down, having just returned from delivering meals to the prisoners. There were only a few being held there at the time- a couple of drunks sleeping the liquor off, a pickpocket that had been caught the day before, a man who had stolen someone else's livestock- and Shaw. As he sat down, Michael couldn't help but smile, remembering the battle with the pirate ship in which Shaw had been captured. It had all been so easy and routine, and it had been his first naval sortie. His father said he had behaved admirably, and so Michael's face glowed as he remembered. Michael turned his chair to the window, thinking of the day. He didn't notice as the girl slipped in and grabbed his keys, as he was deep in thought, his eyes closed. God, but he had done well! It would be no time before he could take his Lieutenant's Exams and become a lieutenant on his father's ship. That would be wonderful, terrific, glorious. Just then, there was a noise behind him, and Michael stood up immediately, reflexively catching the keys just as they flew at his head. "What-? Hey!" Michael's heart jumped in his throat. Shaw, out of his cell? How did he get the keys?? One look behind the smiling escapee showed him a girl with raven hair, who grinned triumphantly at him before the two ran off. "I imagine you're gonna have a time explaining this one to your superiors!" Shaw laughed as he turned to run. The girl hollered something over her shoulder as well, but Michael couldn't hear it, for he was suddenly weak and stunned. Holding onto the back of his chair with white-knuckled hands, he felt like his heart had stopped. That girl... could it be?? He had visions of the small, raven-haired girl he used to watch when he was younger, the girl that had disappeared so many years ago now. "Hey- HEY! GET BACK HERE!" Michael came to his senses as he heard the front jail door slam, and barreled through the office door after them. He ran to the door and seized the knob, fumbling with it for several seconds before he managed to open it, and burst out into the street. "YOU THERE, STOP!" That had to be her- and now she was back all the sudden, coming to the rescue of a pirate? This must have been the man who captured her. He must have pressed her into his service, likely doing terrible things to her he shuddered to imagine, and now she was brainwashed, made to believe that she must serve him. And now she was breaking him free? He tore down the street after them, his sword scabbard thumping against his thigh as he ran. "OI, GET BACK HERE!" They turned the corner, heading for the docks- they were trying to get on a ship! How could she do this? What kind of girl contemplated breaking a known pirate out of jail, let alone actually doing it? Michael ducked around a man, brushing against the brick of a building as he burst past. "STOP!"

"The boy is going to have the all gang of guards on us," Jonathon hissed as he and his daughter ran through the crowds of stunned people. Just the looks on their faces wanted to make him laugh, but there was no time to stop now. They had to get to the ship, and get to the ship fast. "Sam had better be ready when we arrive."
"Don't worry, he will be," Aurelia said as her cloak flew behind her. "The men are to have the ship ready for us to set sail at once." She ducked around a man who tried to stop her, kicking at his leg and sending him to the ground. She glanced over her shoulder at the young man that pursued them. Luckily none of the other guards were hot on his tail following them.
Jonathon could see the ship, and the men scrambling around on board. No doubt they had seen the two of them coming. The only problem was how close the boy was to them. He didn't think the young man was stupid, but he just may try to board the pirate ship.
"Keep going, I'll hold him off." Aurelia said as she came to a stop. "Just make sure you leave a rope hanging for me so I can get on the ship." She took off her cloak and threw it at her father. The sun glinted off the twin swords that she carried.
"Aurelia maybe this isn't..."
"Dad I know what I am doing," Aurelia shot him a grin. "Go and I'll keep him occupied for a few minutes." She took a sword in each hand.
Jonathon stared at her for a moment before nodding and hurrying on towards the ship.
Aurelia turned her gaze back to the young man as he drew closer. She took a deep breath, her raven dark hair settling over her shoulders.

Michael watched as Shaw ran on towards the dock, the girl turning around and pulling the twin swords from their sheathes. A frown creased his face as he ran towards her. She was going to try to hold him off while the escaped prisoner got away. She steadily advanced towards him, blades drawn. Did she really want to make a fight out of this? What compelled her to defend this man? "Stop right there and put those swords down," Michael called ahead to her, his own hand nowhere near close to his sword. He wouldn't draw a sword on a girl, especially her. It had to be her; his mind would accept no other alternative for the truth. Seeing the drawn swords, people backed up from the girl, not wishing to be maimed or killed. She appeared to know how to handle them. "Look here, I'm not fighting you," Michael panted, catching up to her. He brushed the hair from his eyes as he regarded her. "Just put them down and step aside."

Aurelia raised an eyebrow as she just listened to the young man before. He wasn't going to fight? Really? Well that was no fun. And she had no intention of setting her swords aside. She frowned slightly at the twinge of recognition coursed through her again. Why did she think she knew him. Aurelia gave a small shake of her head.
"I will not put them down, and I will not step aside. You think I would make it that easy for you after the trouble of breaking him out of jail?" She made a tsking sound and shook her head. "I thought guards were smarter than that." She backed up another step. Aurelia lowered the swords slightly. "It is very brave of you, following two pirates all by yourself, or is it very foolish?"
Aurelia glanced over her shoulder quickly as she heard her name. The ship was beginning to make its way away from the dock. "Sorry, but I have to go now. I'm sure you'll understand. After all, you wouldn't let your father rot in a cell, would you?" She quickly sheathed her swords and ran towards the docks, dodging around the people who tried to get in her way.
As she reached the edge, Aurelia jumped off into the water. Underwater her hand found the rope and she grabbed hold tightly, breaching the surface of the water. As she did so she felt it being pulled up. Soon she was on the deck and wrapped in her father's arms.
"Thought you weren't going to make it," Jonathon said as he let her go.
"Don't be such a worry wart Father. I always make it." Aurelia turned away from him and looked at the dock where she had left the young man standing. Her eyes found him before she turned and went to get some dry clothes on.

Michael couldn't help but smile at her words. "I'm not a guard- I'm an officer. A naval officer. And as for following you, whyever not? One of you is unarmed, and the other of you a girl. Why need I be scared?" He saw that she swords lowered slightly as she regarded him, and wondered if she remembered him too. Part of him longed to reach out and touch her, to be sure she was really there, but the other part of him told him to remain composed, that she was his enemy. She had jailbroken a known pirate, and was holding weapons against him. He saw out of the corner of his eye that Shaw was now aboard a ship, likely his own, and it was now leaving the dock, and saw that at the same time, the girl was looking at the same thing. He knew what she must have been thinking, and moved to stop her when she said that the pirate Shaw was her father. He faltered, now even more confused than ever, but quickly recovered himself when the raven-haired girl turned and ran for the dock. "Get back here!" Michael hollered after her, sprinting in her wake with his hand on the hilt of his sword. "Stop!" He ducked past a woman carrying a small child and narrowly avoided bowling over an elderly man who cursed at him and aimed a kick in his direction. Michael felt the foot brush against his thigh as he ran, but paid the old man no mind as he ran after the raven-haired girl. He couldn't let her get away- if both her and Shaw -her father- got away, he would be the laughingstock of the town. Michael ran onto the dock, catching up quickly on his long legs, but the next thing he knew, he was face against the planks sprawled out on the dock, his sword having gotten tangled in his legs. He hit the wood with a dull thud, head hitting the ground hard, and scrambled back to his feet, face violently red. The girl was already on the ship, wrapped in Shaw's arms- her father's arms. "No!" He couldn't let her get away, not now. She had made a fool out of him, and he couldn't let her get away with that.

Tyler sat in the back of the shop, tailoring a suit for a wealthy merchant who just happened to be in town. It was a demanding job. It seemed the man couldn't keep a stitch of clothing together. It made one wonder what the guy did to ruin such fine clothes. He snorted and shook his head. Hopefully the guy would be gone soon, and Tyler would be left in peace. That would definitely be a blessing.
He was so caught up in his work that he didn't hear the commotion going on outside. When he finally realized something was happening he just shrugged and went back to work. It wasn't any of hi business. Besides, he had a lot of work to get done. Tyler stood up and stretched. He was six foot tall, not skinny and not buff, but of average build. His dark brown hair was long enough that it fell into his face and he had to brush his eyes. His green eyes surveyed the room and yawned. Tyler really needed a break.

Michael was furious as he watched the crew ready the ship to leave. He had a throbbing in his temple, and he reached his hand up to touch the tender spot. He couldn't expect anything good if he were to climb aboard the ship. They would hold him for ransom, or worse, they would kill him. He needed a ship so that he could follow them. The only other naval ship in the harbor was his father's- he ran for it, jumping off the high dock onto the deck rather than take the time to walk down the gangway. His legs nearly buckled as he landed, but he managed to steady himself on the rail. He needed to commandeer the big ship to block the harbor so that they could not escape, for that was all he could expect to do. The ship was deserted- there was no crew in sight, which was very odd. A sense of dread rippling through him, Michael rushed down to the wardroom to find that the tilling lines had been cut. The ship would not sail. Cursing in his fury at the pirates who had rendered the ship immobile, Michael dashed back onto the deck, bursting through the steerage room, nearly tripping again over his sword. By the time he was back on the dock, the pirate ship was already leaving the harbor. What was he going to do? He hadn't enough time to get a crew out here to refit the ship, but he couldn't let them get away. He couldn't live with everyone laughing at him for being thwarted by a mere girl. He had to get her, and recapture Shaw. Michael looked around the harbor, desperate for ideas. That was when he spotted the only other vessel in the harbor- a small fishing boat owned by his friend John. It would have to do. The boat was small, a seventy-two footer with no mizzen mast, but he would still need others to help him. And he knew he couldn't expect his father to help him, or give him men. He would have to find a crew himself. Michael knew that John Crook would be aboard- he practically lived on the ship, as he could not stomach being around his father's new wife. The woman had come into his life immediately after the death of his mother, and had expected him to cater to her every whim. So he spent most of his time aboard the small fishing vessel making repairs and smoking his pipe. As expected, he found John in the captain's cabin, pipe stem in between his teeth. John looked quite startled to see his friend pop angrily through the door, but was eager and ready to start the chase when Michael told him what had transpired. "Well someone needs to get them, and I figure to be able as any," he said proudly, stowing away his pipe. John relished the chance at adventure, and immediately accepted. "We'll need to bring Tyler along, of course," John said, and Michael agreed. In less than three minutes, the two were banging on the door of the stitchery shop where their friend Tyler worked.
