i use my mules to kill pirates and aliens. Or i kill them on mules' islands. That way you can see how long to wait for a drop: when the sign pops up saying you helped, kill the next one. I get at least one drop every invasion that way. Unfortunately, i have not yet seen an alien invasion. Only Pirates.

BTW, what can be done with Pirate and Alien Collections? There are no buildings that need them...
