I believe you have to go to their island and collect every X hours or you dont get any money.
It's like collecting on your own island: If you don't collect it right away, it sits there, and you can collect it later.
True, but I dont think the owner collecting brings the renter any money.
If the owner collects, it doesn't count as it being collected for the other person. Same thing the other way around.
I confirm this...
I have rented in my friends islands... and they have rented in mine too.
The income marked on the building is shared by both... If I go to collect (in my island or in their island)... I take my part and his part is left for they to pick when they visit.
Same happen to them (my rentors).
In my island the icon advising i can take the gold is the same as in any other of my building.
In their island, when my rented building is ready to be harvested have an icon with th $ in it, once I have pick the icon change to one smily.
Is clear income of the rented building (for both...renter + island owner) is bigger as more upgraded is the building.
The one to upgrade the building is the island owner.

Out of contest now and not 100% tested. But I have noted... same my buildings or my friend buildings... rented or not, are ready to be harvested more frecuently if I log/they log on game. It we stay a couple of days without logging the game not much to be harvested.
Also out of contest because it happen to me but dont know to others.
In the second island, you can buy a little spot to offert to be rented, but in my case at least I dont see which building can be build in it. Sometime in some of your second islands I see little spot to be rented, but when I try...there is not any building available... only in the middle and big one are.
