Drumbeats and Bullets- A Civil War Roleplay It is June of 1864, and the American Civil War has been going on for three years now. Many have died, and still there are more deaths to come. The carnage is unbelievable. Cannons fire shrapnel, case shot, and solid shot at files of enemy soldiers, and these men, just boys, really, wonder if they will survive, or perhaps be maimed for the rest of their lives by an errant shot. Young boys and old men alike die on both sides by the thousands. Still, despite the horrors, despite seeing friends and family die, they fight on. It seems as if the war will never end!
Those in the Union army fight typically to bring the country back as one united nation, to put down the secessionists and return to a peaceful life. The Confederates fight for their freedom, for the right to do as they please- in their own country. Both believe God to be on their side, as how could they be wrong? Which side are you on?
Notes: We will be using just one company of a regiment from each army to reduce confusion as to units. (There were several hundred Union and Confederate regiments, and there are 10 companies in a regiment, so we'll just use one per army.) Those of you who decide to be Union soldiers will be known as Company A of the 140th Pennsylvania. Those who are Confederates will be Company K of the 62nd North Carolina.
Nobody is to be above the rank of Captain. There would be the following in a typical company: 1 Captain, 1 First Lieutenant, one Second Lieutenant, 8-10 Sergeants, 10-12 Corporals, and 80-100 privates. This means we have a lot of room for privates, but no more than the aforementioned amounts of those in other ranks!
PM me your profile, titled as "Drumbeats and Bullets," and I'll add you to the accepted characters. Also, Confederates post in red, Union in blue. If you for some reason, choose to be a civilian, post in bolded black.
Profile Skeleton: Name and Rank: Username: Which Army/unit?: Date of Enlistment: (Would typically have been between July of 1861 and April of 1864). Weapons: (please use weapons that were normal for the times! Some of those are: The Enfield Rifle, Mississippi Rifle, Austrian Musket, Richmond Musket, Whitworth Rifle, Winchester Rifle, Henry Carbine, Sharpes Carbine, D-Guard Bowie knife, bayonet, etc.)

Accepted Characters
Union:
Nobody Yet.
Confederate:
Name and Rank: Corporal Kevin Lynch Lane Username: xDrillbit Taylor Which Army/unit?: K Company, 62nd North Carolina, CSA Date of Enlistment: July 4, 1861 Age: 19 Appearance: Kevin Lane is rather small, at about five and a half feet tall, and weighing only about 110 pounds. He has dark brown hair, shaved close to his head, and sharp, gray-green eyes. His face, like the rest of his body, is angular and thin. He bears a number of scars all over his body as reminders of earlier battles. About my character: Kevin enlisted in the regiment on Independence Day of 1861 at the town celebration, as it would have been unpatriotic for him not to do so. He was only sixteen at the time. He was raised on a small farm by his mother and father, along with his younger brother, Michael. His mother died a few years before the war, and so he grew up practically raising his younger brother. Michael enlisted with him in 1861, despite having been only thirteen. The two brothers fought alongside each other until Michael was killed during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1862. Kevin has been lonely ever since, and can often be moody and aloof. This is not to say he is cold, however; he does have a heart, and can be very compassionate at times, particularly when dealing with those younger than him. Weapons: 1841 Richmond Musket, spike bayonet, and his father's old hunting knife.
Name and Rank: Pvt. Rufus T. Neale Username: Knight of LOR Which Army/unit?: K Company, 62nd North Carolina Date of Enlistment: March 16, 1864 Age: 15 Appearance: He is young, tan, crooked nose bent slightly to the right, a small scar on the palm of his left hand, green eyes, short black hair, beardless, confederate uniform slightly too large for him, with the pants and sleeves rolled up slightly, around six feet two inches, and a look of adventure in his eyes. About my character: Rufus enlisted as soon as his younger brother, who was nine when the war started, was able to help his mom's slaves on their farm. Before he left, he and his brother made a blood pact that they would both survive, and reunite after the war so their mom didn't have to worry too much. He wanted to grab a rifle, and kill as many Union soldiers as he could for his country. He wanted to fight for freedom, and for his country. He felt that he just had to show those Union boys that they had no right to force them to do anything. Let alone to deprive them of their means of survival. It would destroy the economy in the South, and yet they were going to do it anyway. Instead of getting a rifle like he wanted, he got a flag. He was assigned to be the flag bearer, and proudly display the confederate flag before the enemy. Weapons: Confederate flag, Sharpes Carbine, and a Sheffield Bowie knife

Current Events:
Daytime, roughly 11:00 AM. Weather is seasonably warm, skies are cloudless. The two armies are camped straight across from each other on opposite sides of the Susquehanna River. If one picket were to "halloo" across, they would be clearly heard, and likely seen, if it were daytime, by the opposing picket. At the moment, things are peaceful. Soldiers write letters home, mend their equipment, read books, hold prayer meetings, gamble, and even play baseball. Right now, things are very calm, almost as if there was not a war going on. But this cannot last. The officers are receiving orders to ready for combat, and so as always, the war will continue.

Posted 8.23.11- We need two more Union soldiers before we can start! More Confederates and civilians allowed, of course, but we must have at least two more Yankees to begin.
