I don´t think I am ever going to get French . . . D:
I don´t even know how it is considered a romance language.
Spanish and Italian pronunciation are NO problem . . . but then French . . . D´:
And worse yet . . . it is one of the three languages I am majoring in. HAHA

Mh!!! Stange! You said strange? how's strange!
I n France,there's a lot of advertisments which says "You want to tell her how you feel about her? And you don't know how to proceed? Send "poème" to 87532 and we will send you a poem so that you can express yourself to the person you're in love with." SO ROMANTIC!
Really, french is a good choice :p

You should look into historical linguistics to see how they're related. It's pretty straightforward and fun.

A fun thing:
it. ALbergo - fr. AUberge
it. montaGNA - fr. montaGNE

Therefore, alba - aube.

Sera - soir
notte - nuit
otto - huit

As soon as you get used to pronunciation, everything else becomes much easier. In fact, French grammar is a lot closer to Italian.

It may be easier to look into a dialect of Canadian French for learning pronunciation. I find it's much easier to distinguish phonemes in Canadian French than in European. Then after you've mastered that and become familiar with it, you can move on to European French.

@Mikagi:
You took me too seriously.
I understand how they are related.
All languages that stem directly from Latin are considered to be romance languages (simplest explanation). This gives them similar grammar rules and near-identical words.

You could even throw Spanish in for the montagna one since the italian gn is ñ in Spanish. I'm fluent in Spanish and I can easily understand written French . . . but there are all these extra letters that make no sound . . . WHY?! Haha.
I also have no choice over which version of French I start next year because I'll be in college.

@Louloumi:
French is considered the Romance language of love.
Spanish is the RL of poetry.
Italian is the RL of song.

I don't know how they consider French to be THE language of love though . . . x P It is too crazy for me. ;D

@Both:
This is mainly ranting out my fear of French.
Both Spanish and Italian will be very simple . . . French is the only one of which I am scared. xP

You're right that I took your comment too seriously. But I included the differences between the languages as a fun fact for anyone. smile We can included Spanish (and Portuguese) for "mountain", but I used Italian because the spelling between the two languages are a lot closer.

Fun fact, the word for "language" evolved in very amusing ways:
It. lingua
Pt. língua
Sp. lengua
Fr. langue
Rm. limba

I suppose analyzing Romance languages is more fun for people studying linguistics. razz I love how the silent vowels and consonants in French are still written in Modern French.

I hope you won't be too scared learning French. The grammar will be easier for you considering you speak Spanish as a native language (and learned Italian). As soon as you learn the basics, you'll most likely be the best in the class!

LIMBA?! HAHA
I like that one.
Those crazy Romanians.
I wonder what it is in Basque and Catalan.

AND I DON´T LIKE HOW THE SILENT VOWELS AND CONSONANTS ARE STILL WRITTEN IN MODERN FRENCH!! D;
-Dies-
Why can´t it be like the majority of other romance languages and just have (almost) every letter spoken. D:

I want to take Portuguese soooo badly, but my adviser (who decided not to show up and instead I got to talk to a grad student . . . URGH) suggested that I would have too many languages crammed into my schedule and thought I was crazy enough for taking three.
I´m so glad this guild exists so I don´t feel like a crazy freak for loving language sooo much. : D

And we got so far off topic. HAHA
Thanks Louloumi for putting up with my ramblings. : D

I googled it:
Cs. llengua
fri. lenghe
Basque isn't a Romance language, but what I found is "mihi"

It used to be like every other one, but then vowels become reduced and then eventually not even spoken.

Maybe next year you can take Portuguese. By then, you'll have a solid foundation in other Romance languages that it'll be a breeze learning Portuguese. A língua portuguesa é muito similar à língua espanhola. Será fácil!

here is : quebecois
here is : french
and here is french people who talk with quebecois accent (really funny for french people) : Qui veut gagner de l'argent en Masse

Don't mind the disccussion subject it's just to ear the accent.

There are other wonderful examples of the Québecois dialect. Tourisme Montréal (which is the city I recently moved to) has some great videos displaying Montréal in both English and French. Here's a video for you to hear more on Québecois: Hochelaga-Maisonneuve entre Ami

Don't forget to listen to Franco-Ontarien. There are multiple dialects of French in Canada.

French french sounds.... dare I say it smoother than Quebecois ;;
But I can hear the differences, not by much but it's there.

I find that European French sounds a bit more pretentious, while Canadian French is a lot more passionate. There's a book you should read (here's an interview with the author: D'où vient l'accent des Québécois? Et celui des Parisiens?), which tells you the truth and history of the dialects. In short, the Canadian dialects are closer to the historical accent than the modern French one (as the European French changed the way they spoke).
