The Eight and The Fire (the sequel to The Eight) are about a living chess game played out by the characters as pieces, the game centers on the existence and collecting of a fictional chess set said to hold the secret way.
I just finished reading The Fire. Personally I found it opening far more questions that it answers and thought it left off at an odd place. Granted, I loved The Eight and The Fire wasn't far behind.
I do have some questions though. I was unable to locate an online character list, nor a family tree. So I must ask, how are Solarin and Nim related to Minnie/Mireille? There is a gap between Tatiana (or the father of Solarin and Nim) and Charlot's son Alexandre Dumas de Remy.
