Samhain stalked her way through the underbrush of the woods, looking for a stream or something to distract her. She was in a rather bad mood, and for Sam, a bad mood was edging on serial killer. God, she better not run into Akua, or worse, some really friendly 'giet... like Sumitra... Ugh, even thinking her name made Sam want to find her and rough her up a bit. Braum might be the only 'giet she could deal with, and that's only if he were in a really bad swing towards the crazy. He was getting worse these days, and while most 'giets were trying to steer clear of him, it made her like him more.

Sam's ear twitched as there was a cracking in the underbrush nearby. A rabbit from the sounds of it. Sam began to hunt it, crouching low to the ground right near the bush the sound had come from. She pounced a moment later, a painful crunching noise coming from the bush. She carried the small brown thing a little ways to a clearing where she merrily, well, as merrily as Sam could be when she was grumpy, digging into her lunch.

User ImageDante’s sharp ears picked up the sound of someone enjoying a meal even before the scent of blood reached his nose. Ah. A fellow ‘giet. He had been wandering for quite some time, on this particular jaunt, without coming across anyone. Now, he had finally found someone. He could only hope they would make for a pleasant diversion from his rather solitary travels.

As he peered past some underbrush and out into the clearing, he paused.

Well, well. This lady was a sight to behold, indeed. She had a rare caliber of beauty, even as she tore into her meal. Such luxurious black fur with even darker rosettes. Such lovely orange accents. Dante was not merely impressed. He was intrigued. This was a lady that he wanted to know better. Someone he hoped he could share more than a few passing words with. Perhaps he would linger a little longer in this area than he had originally intended.

With plans and possibilities forming in his mind, Dante stepped out into the clearing with all of the grace and pride and charm that he could muster, which, to be perfectly honest, was quite a considerable amount. Certainly more than most males could ever hope to achieve.

“Greetings, milady,” he said, “I hate to intrude upon your meal, but I’m afraid that I could not help myself. Tell me, do you live near here?”

Sam looked up at the sound of Dante entering the clearing. What the hell? Just her luck, can't even enjoy a meal in peace.... She thought she'd finally found some time alone and now here comes this male disrupting her lunch.... She continued to fume as he began to speak and about choked on the chunk of rabbit she had just been swallowing.

"Are you serious?" she asked, her words slightly garbled by the slight laugh that she was having a hard time suppressing. "Who talks like that?" She was probably being unnecessarily mean, but she was extraordinarily grumpy today, and the hunger wasn't helping.

Dante was admittedly bemused. He had never had a lady react to him quite like that before. It was…a little disheartening, but at the same time, it also presented a challenge to him. Someone who did not fall at his feet or succumb only too willingly to his flirtatious whims. A rare beauty, indeed.

“You must forgive my manner of speech,” he said, “I’m afraid that it is a byproduct of my profession that I am unable to rid myself of, though to please a lady such as yourself, I would be willing to try.” He bowed his head slightly. “I am Dante, poet and minstrel by trade, wander and romantic by heart. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Might I have the honor of your name?”

Sam grinned slightly, it wasn't out of kindness but rather her effort to not bust out laughing. "Samhain or Sam. And I am by no means a romantic nor do I have much patience for poetry." she said through a laugh. She was down to cleaning off the bones of her meal by this point. She stretched as she stood, cleaning her paws before she blew off this mildly obnoxious 'giet, although it was probably more likely that he would just follow her.

“More’s the pity,” said Dante as he did, indeed, start following her. “Because you are quite worthy as a subject for poems.”

It truly was a pity, he thought, and he suspected that it would be an even greater challenge than he had anticipated to get to know her, if she was not fond or even tolerant of two such large parts of who he was. Still, as he watched her graceful, sinuous movements and considered her brusque words, he knew that the effort would surely be worth it.

“Samhain,” he said, testing the word, rolling it around in his mouth, making it sound decadent. “That is a lovely name.”

Sam scoffed, "I'm glad you like it, I think my mom must not have, as she didn't stick around to use it much." she said sorely. She was not at all sure why this particular insight into her past seemed to escape from her mouth, but there it was. She had been alone since she was a Literne, and she had come to prefer it. People just let you down, every time.

Somewhere along the line, she had become bitter. She hated groups, she always wandered alone and the one time she thought she had maybe found her match, Akua had just walked out of her life for no good reason. She should have known better than to trust him, she was angry and hurt, and terribly unhappy. She was probably taking a bit of this out on this stranger. She let the silence fall, hoping he would take the hint and wander off, but she doubted it, even as she hoped.

At her confession, Dante sobered slightly. The lady might be brash, but that did not mean that she could not feel pain. In fact, in his experience, anger often served as a mask for suffering. If there was any correlation between the two, then Samhain had definitely had more than her share of sorrows.

“I am sorry to hear that,” he said. “My mother did not, as you say, ‘stick around,’ either.” Then, in an attempt to lighten the mood, or perhaps because he could not help but to flirt, he added, “Obviously your mother did not know what a treasure she was missing out on.”

Sam rolled her eyes, He just couldn't keep from flirting, could he? She gave up and settled on ignoring the flirtation, maybe they could have an actual conversation between his incessant need to flirt. Or maybe that was the damn optimism she learned from Luneza peeking through again.

"Doesn't matter, I'm sure she's long dead now, and it's not like I need her anyway. I made it just fine on my own." she held her head high, keeping her eyes forward and it would seemed she might be trying to convince herself more than anybody else.

“I am sure that you have,” Dante said with a sad smile. This lady did not seem the type to be easily defeated, by life or any ‘giet in it. Still, “But I think we all get lonely once in a while, no matter how well we do on our own.”

He knew he did. That was part of what drove him back to civilization time and again. More than his need to share his poetry and songs with others, more than his habitual flirting, Dante simply wanted some company, however fleeting it may be. The knowledge that he was not alone in the world. The warmth and sounds of other ‘giet nearby. The simple pleasure of sharing a joke or a meal with others. Just a little company to stave off the deafening silence of solitude. A little light to ward off the darkness.

That was all he wanted.

That was all he needed.

Or perhaps he, too, was fooling himself. Perhaps what Dante really needed was more than fleeting interactions with society. Perhaps he needed a place to call home.

She snorted, "Seems like I never have time to get lonely. There's always somebody that seems to find me, especially if I want to be alone."

Her words were harsh, but she found herself reflecting much of the same thoughts Dante was. She always seemed to travel close to Luneza or one of the others when she was feeling too down. Even Sumitra's incessant babble could sometimes be a comfort, even if she didn't want to admit it. She immediately staved off that train of thought. That's stupid, she was awesome alone, being with other people just annoyed her.... didn't it?

She finally gave in, if he was going to follow her, she may as well get to know him, he didn't seem to want to disappear. "So," she said, thinking she was going to definitely regret this. "Where do you come from?"

“If someone is forever finding you, then you must be a very lucky ‘giet,” he countered, then allowed her to linger in her thoughts.

Aha! What was that? That was acceptance, that was! She had finally resigned herself to his company. Pleased, Dante grinned, his tail twining sinuously behind him.

“I was born in the mountains,” he said, “and I lived there for much of my young life, even after my mother abandoned me. But I must confess that as soon as I was able, I took to wandering the world; for, though the mountains may have bred me, they were not truly my home.” Not his favorite topic, but if she was asking, he was willing to talk about it anyway.

“But what of you, Samhain? Do you have a place to call home?”

Sam noticed his sudden chipperness and immediately wished she had not given in. Oh well, nothing she could do now. "I was born down here in the valley, but I don't really have a home. No point settling if there is nothing to keep me there. I wander, but I don't generally stay in one place more than a night at a time. It's dangerous to get too tied down." she flinched inwardly, a fleeting thought of Akua passing through her mind. She had been ready to get tied down to him, and look how that had turned out, she was still healing from that.

PostPosted: Wed Aug 03, 2011 11:20 pm

“Dangerous?” Dante wondered aloud. “I admit that I do wander quite a bit, but I do not see the danger in becoming fond of a place or staying more than one night. Perhaps you could explain, dear lady?”

In truth, he was puzzled. What danger was there in attachment to a place? Unless…it was not about a place, but its people? Hmm… Just what darkness haunted this lady?

Sam realized abruptly that she probably should not have said what she did. Now she was presented with two options.... spill her guts and tell him the truth, or find some crap answer to get him to drop it. She reflected on what had happened last time she spilled her guts, the last time she trusted somebody with the truth and instantly marked it as a bad plan.

"Um, It's just you know, dangerous. There are predators and stuff out there that can track you, people that can find you if word spreads that you are still there. It's just dangerous." This sounded lame even to her ears, but she stood behind it, ready to defend it when he called her out on it.
