When most people think apocalypse, they think "Where can I get a gun as fast as possible". Now, we've all heard that statement "sometimes the best offense is a good defense". Couldn't agree more. Now, this is not a zombie specific thread by any means. Honestly, the most dangerous thing you will ever find is Man. They have no teeth, no claws, they have mechanical minds that are able to adapt quite well. Most people are unaware of the abilities of their own brain since they are so focused on the media, but it's there, in some more than others, but it's there regardless. With that in mind, your defenses need to be a bit more clever than a fence with a bit of razor wire. Traps and such are a great idea, especially the older ones that people would not be expecting.

I think to start this off, we should begin with some of the common ones.
-Trip wires, a great way to delay and distract intruding parties. Finding wires to use can be a pain, so if you have something like a piano, it might be time to start taking that bad boy apart for it's wires.
-Bear traps, pretty self explanatory, and when combined with trip wires, can be extremely deadly.

The first trap I thought of while reading those was pitfalls, guess team rocket wired that into my head while I was younger. I think they could actually be useful as a defense though, given you know how to blend a bunch of sticks over a hole well enough to go unnoticed.

Snares. They're a pain To look for if they're done right and they can hurt pretty bad, especially when running. And I do love me a good pitfall. But some modern traps people might not expect either, like I wouldn't expect an explosive. If you can learn how to make them they could work.
