character -- Helena was named for the volcano
Mt. St. Helens because as a baby she was very vocal.
It started out as a joke, but then her geologist parents
were serious. She doesn't think it's funny.
what you first notice about Helena is that she doesn't
handle humor well. most jokes are seen as attacks.
maybe she'll grow out of it, she's still young and changing.
or maybe she's on a different wavelength than
other people. she wants to believe in something extraordinary
but is at a loss what. she makes up schemes in her head
but never acts on them. she needs an impetus to work
and she can work well, but she's a very comfortable
human being. she likes things the way they are and
prefers to enjoy the moment rather than act to change it.
she also doesn't get along well with boys.

Hartford, CT
Helena has lived here ever since she was young.
her parents take her on trips to the sea often
though it's usually for them to research geology
more than to relax. Helena plans on applying to
colleges that are out of state, or not on the east coast.
she wants a change. even though she doesn't admit it.
What's the Scoop
Helena's place of work in Connecticut,
an ice cream parlor of no small renown
in a suburb of Hartford. Helena has been
trained in the making of its ice cream
and works here part-time after school
or during the summer for extra money.
she just doesn't know what she plans
to do with all of it yet. it's currently sitting
in her bank account, unused.
New York, NY
the city of never-ending lights, sound, spectacle.
Helena travels here sometimes with her family
to see plays. Her class is taking a trip here soon.
