Background of Summanu Change: Degen's aren't actually granted their powers by the Prey/Pray, now. But by some mysterious higher force, unknown to many.
Summanu [sue-mah-nu]) is the realm where this story takes place. Summanu is divided into several different sectors (equivalent of planets/realms) divided by Tribune Gates. The two primary and major sectors are Vindelice [vihn-deh-liss] and Praestania [pray-stah-nee-uh].PoV - VindeliceThe Praestanians, or "Prey" as they are generally called by their enemies in an attempt to mock them, are beings that look a bit different from humans. They generally have rather wild and feral appearances having tails, claws, fur etc . . . (Mammal traits.) They're free-will loving creatures who won't hesitate to attack at the drop of a dime and are a great threat to all of Vindelice. The Prey implore the use of magic to assist them, a skill that the Vindelicites do not have.
The Vindelicites, or "Vines" [vee-nayz] as some shorten, are peace loving and in many ways equivalent to humans. They have a sturdy military system in place to assure that life moves along smoothly. Vines, in order to compensate for their lack of ability to use magic, are quite proficient in the development/wielding of weaponry of all sorts. Some that can even mimic/rival the magic that the Prey utilize.
In the past, the Vines and Prey, though they did not agree on much, lived peacefully in their separate sectors for many years. That was until Vines, content with their daily lives and wanting a peaceful vacation, began to visit Praestania. The Vines would establish vacation spots as to not impede upon the Prey too much, and would found rules and regulations for both the Vines and the Prey who came here. It was a mutual understanding that was to be followed.
But the Prey were infuriated by these rules and regulations, being the free-will loving people they are, and began rebelling, taking innocent Vines' lives and even taking some hostage. This is when the Vindelicite Army stepped in. Thus the start of the war between the two races.
It was a long and grueling war, with both sides taking heavy losses. But, the greatest blow to the Vindelicites was the discovery of the Degens [dee-jinz]. Degens are Vindelicites who develop magical abilities granted by the Prey. Degens could also infect others with D-genes by prolonged contact with other Vindelicites. Degens generally use tactics of trickery to try and gain their ranks back into the army, only to protect the Prey in times of battle, and were to be eliminated at sight along with the Prey themselves.
The war ended with both sides merely coming to a truce with the Lacertus [luh-sair-tuhs] Council stepping in and locking the Tribune Gate between Vindelice and Praestania. And now that the war is over, the main concern of the Vines is the Degens. Routine check ups are a must to insure that D-genes don't get spread around.PoV - PraestaniaThe Vindelicites, shortened to "Vindicts" [ven-diktz] by the Praestania (though some use the term "Vines" as well) are harsh and strong-handed beings who use military might to gain whatever they wish.
The Praestanians, or "Pray" as they often shorten it to, are freedom-loving peaceful creatures who may look more feral on the outside, but are more in tune with nature than the Vindicts and consider themselves far more peaceful than them as well.
The Pray got along with the Vindicts until they invaded their territory under the pretense of 'vacationing'. As, though some tourists did come along and seem to be there for that reason, the military escorts that accompanied them seemed to be exploring far too much, and it was eventually discovered that it was for the purpose of expanding their militarist reach. As, the Pray had much luscious landscape and bountiful food to partake in.
Finding this plan out, the Pray went to confront the Vindelicite Military head on at their base. Though, things didn't end well with the Vindelicites dismissing the accusations against them and accusing the Pray of being hostile. One smack of a gun in the face of a Pray is what dismissed the first shot of the war. The battle between the Pray and the Vindicts began there, some of the Pray trying to evacuate the innocent Vindicts out of the area to reduce bloodshed.
It was a long and grueling war, with both sides taking heavy losses. But the greatest hope of the Pray was the Degens. They were gifted with the power of Decet, the king of the Pray, and were told of how the Pray truly felt. Wanting to be intermediates between the Pray and the Vines, the Degens returned to try and make peace, but were eventually executed.
The war ended with both sides merely coming to a truce with the Lacertus [luh-sair-tuhs] Council stepping in and locking the Tribune Gate between Vindelice and Praestania.
