Thanatos

God of Non-violent Death

This cabin has scenes of gentle death literally sewn into the granite. It looks like a tall temple with two torches of black flames in front. The interior of the cabin is lit by numerous candles and has a long blood red carpet in the center. The beds sit to the right side of the room. At the back is an altar with two statues, one of Thanatos and one of Hades, on either side of a Stygian Ice Orb that should only be used in times of emergency. It is a place avoided by woodland creatures and the sort while hardly anything grows here, save for the occasional weed. The cabin is usually very quiet compared to others.

Kathryn walked forwards nervously, clenching her hand around her sole possessions: a whip-keychain and a handful of darts. She had no idea where she was, or how she had gotten there really, aside from what she had been told by the people in the truck and the people at the 'camp'.
Those weren't people. They looked like they were part animal, or something... and the Doctor, he- Kathryn shook her head, her eyes falling down as she continued forwards again. She hardly noticed the artwork on the walls.

She had noticed on her way in, however, the void of life. There didn't seem to be anything alive in this cabin aside from herself. Licking her lips, she walked towards a chair and sat; her legs together from her knees to her feet. In her open hand Kathryn found the keychain to glimmer in the light, and she stared distractedly at it with empty crystal eyes. Her mind drifted to her Mother, Rose, as her eyes slowly slid shut. Kat had always been a light sleeper, something which she had been thankful for when things went bump in the night, but she was exhausted. Today had been more eventful than any other day in her life, and all she could do (as well as what she needed most) was sleep.

As her face tipped forwards, her black hair fell over the pale skin. Her breathing became shallow, and with such a colorless complexion she may have even appeared dead to the unobservant. Her shoulder shifted and she collapsed sideways into the arm of the chair, her far foot sliding out and her keychain sliding almost out of her hand; it was hardly caught between her fingers. Her shoulders rose and fell silently as her breathing deepened. A sigh fluttered from between her lips before she fell silent once more.

In the dark cabin, Simon felt comfortable. So distorted had he become that the scenes of death depicted all over the cabin made him feel more relaxed. His eyes were on the computer screen before him, and he read over what he had written. He kept a very detailed website with every myth he learned, every piece of information about the gods and goddesses he was descended from and related to. He leaned back, eyes finally done skimming over the well-constructed paragraph. He submitted the change, rubbing his eyes and leaning back further in his seat. His head hung back as well, and he looked up at the ceiling. Very few dared to look at the walls and the ceiling, but on the ceiling was a series of images from the Fields of Punishment. His mind listed out the many prisoners. Sisyphus, doomed to push a rock to the top of the hill and have it roll back down so that he had to start over, Tantallus, doomed to stand in a lake under a peach tree without a drop of water or a bite of food for eternity. The obsidian walls of the cabin depicted similar tortures, but more a record of every death ever encountered. It was likely a depiction of the first time people had died as such. The detail in these obsidian etchings was surprisingly acute, and Simon had no problem picking out exactly what had happened.

Hanging, crushed under rocks, falling and cracking open the head, gunshots, sword stabs, and scenes too gruesome in nature to even describe. Simon sat himself back up, going back to his listing of Greek myths, deciding to go over a very popular myth; Poseidon and Athena's competition over Athens. He had made a promise to himself to include different myths every day, and he had realized he hadn't included this one yet. Thinking about Athena and Poseidon, he hadn't written the story of Medusa, either; the temple priestess of Athena, who was seduced by Poseidon and laid with him in Athena's temple. Medusa was more known for her curse; where her hair turned into snakes and she turned people to stone the instant they saw her horrifying form. "Hmm...I have to put that one in too. And then probably should start working on tales from the Odyssey...I need to reread that," the demigod murmured, more to himself than anyone else, since there was no one in the cabin. That was about when he heard heavy footsteps running to his cabin. He rose, knowing that those footsteps didn't belong to his sister or his charge, and walked over to the door. He had a feeling it was one of those stupid children's dares, where the kid runs up, knocks the door, and runs before the mean old murderer answers. Proving he wasn't afraid.

Just before the kid got to the door, Simon pulled it open, smiling. "Wonderful! Guests! Oh, do come in, I promise I won't bite! At least, not while you can feel it...~" The kid screamed, running away from the door, and Simon closed it, sighing to himself. Sure, he was playing the part, but was he really just a murderer to everyone? No one bothered to ask him his side, not even the friend he had found. Of course, he knew his sister didn't have to. She had already seen his life from beginning to end, literally. She could see from his birth, all the way through to now, and then his life would skip ahead before her eyes, all the way to his death. She knew it, not that she could tell him. He was internally curious, but it didn't bother him as much as it bothered other demigods. The curiosity simply irked at him every so often. He knew that if Amadeus was aware of her power and she had seen his death, it would be likely that Amadeus would try to force the information out of her, and he had his ways. Simon was learning daily that there was a lot more to the young heir than could be determined from a glance.

Glancing over his shoulder, Simon noted the disaster area of his bed. He hadn't made it today, nor had he bothered to fold up his pajamas. He sighed softly, considering he was in the middle of typing, but knowing if he didn't do it, Kathryn would the second that she walked in, and that irked him more than anything. She seemed to believe that he found her a hassle, and he couldn't recall ever acting that way. However, he preferred to make it so she couldn't do anything when she came in, so he left his desk in the corner, something only he was allowed to touch. He had made that clear to Kathryn, considering he didn't want her moving things around on his desk. If she did, he wouldn't be able to find them, and he had a certain amount of OCD anyway. He pushed himself back from the desk, getting up and arching his back to feel a relieving pop. He quickly made his bed, folded up his pajamas, and placed them where he put his dirty clothes. One thing he didn't mind her doing was laundry, because he hated laundry with a passion. His eyes scanned the cabin for anything else she was likely to launch into, and he nodded with satisfaction when nothing was found.

The demigod flopped into his chair, and yelped as the whole chair went backwards. His head crashed into the floor, not that he could feel it, and he lay in stasis for a bit. His vision had gone suddenly blurry, and he waited for it to clear. His hand reached behind his head slowly, and he brought it in front of his eyes, frowning at the sight of red. "s**t, I cracked my head open..." The demigod dare not move. Kathryn would be back soon, and she'd get an Apollo camper, or Chiron. Whoever was found first...He was kind of hoping Chiron, since Chiron didn't treat him like a second-class citizen. Chiron at least tolerated him and kept a neutral opinion, from what Simon could tell. After all, he'd never made a move to hurt anyone at the Camp, so why should he be considered dangerous? Simon closed his eyes with a soft sigh. His whole body was numb. Would he be able to tell when he bled too much? Time to see.

Shu listened to her explanations, groaning internally. He knew he had to follow her, make sure she got there okay. His brother would laugh at him, but it was how he had been raised with Lee (who was close enough to a girl at times). He was too courteous for his own good at times, and with a heavy sigh, he pushed himself to his feet, walking behind her. “Here, I’ll walk you there. It’s pretty close to the amphitheater, and I was going to go ahead and play some piano,” he said, delivering an excuse as he slipped his hands in his pockets. He walked out of the cabin with her, pulling the door closed behind him softly. He risked a glance at her, seeing that she seemed a little happier than she had in previous conversation. He smiled a bit, though it looked like a bit of a crueler, more mischievous expression on his face, like he was planning. He’d gotten used to this, considering kids used to make fun of him for it back in school.

“So, what’s your brother actually like? I mean, I hear a lot of stuff, but I’ve never really…talked to the guy. I’ve heard that he’s completely psycho in the head, like he was dropped on it as a baby or something like that,” Shu replied, but he knew for a fact that simply dropping on a child on his head wasn’t a definite cause of insanity. He once spent a week volunteering at a mental hospital as part of community service from a shoplifting he’d once committed back when he was about fifteen, and he would never forget the people he’d seen behind the glass barrier. There were times that he was almost manipulated, just from how deep a patient was in their reality. He could easily imagine this Simon being insane like these men, considering he’d just killed several people, including his own child. It was like he’d just snapped for no reason.

His eyes glanced toward the stables, where he knew there had to be some problem from the yelling and all-around chaos surrounding it. Of course, he was never one to visit the stables. He hated horses, really. They stunk, and when they kicked, they kicked hard. He didn’t really think about how he knew that – probably all the cartoons he’d watched as a kid – but instead looked at Kat. He tilted his head. “Is that one your cabin? It’s kinda…morbid…” he commented, pointing at the blackened cabin with engraved scenes that – as he got closer – appeared to be different sorts of tortures or deaths. It was quite unsettling, in his opinion, though he wouldn’t voice that aloud. Why should he be afraid of a cabin? He looked at his friend, then stepped ahead quickly to open the door for her. He followed her in, looking around, and then spotting a man lying in the corner at a computer – something not many demigods had in their cabins – with a pool of blood around his head. Granted, the pool wasn’t overly big, but that just meant he hadn’t fallen too long ago.

“And I assume this is your brother,” he muttered, walking over to the man, who had closed his eyes. He seemed to be asleep. “Hey. Wake up,” he said, patting the blonde on his face. The man’s eyes opened, and he looked at Shu, then at Kat. “That’s it. Now, we’re going to have to clean you up…Kat, can you get some warm water and some cloths? And if there aren’t any bandages here, there are a ton in the closet of the Apollo cabin. I need you to get everything quickly, since I don’t know how much more blood he can lose.”

“A lot,” the man murmured in reply to that statement. Shu rolled his eyes a bit, just for the fact that he really shouldn’t have been coherent with how hard he had hit his head.

Kathryn looked up towards Shu with a pleasant gaze, her vibrant eyes easily holding his gaze not that; really, she had nothing to fear from him. Not that it hadn't come at a rather high price—Kathryn would be kidding herself and everybody around her if she tried to lie and say that she’d be able to properly sleep that night. That wasn’t anything particularly unusual either; nightmares from the past and the present tended to haunt her, leaving her sleeplessly lying in bed. Although, she was arguably better off than Simon who never seemed to sleep at all.

A heavy sigh fell through Kathryn’s lips as she closed her eyes, shaking her head a little before an almost sad smile spread across her face.
”Brother is a very good person,” Kathryn slowly explained, a warmness lighting in her eyes as she held the gaze of the son of Apollo, ”He’s severely misunderstood, I’m afraid… but I think that he prefers it that way. Don’t tell him I said this but… I think he’s afraid of getting too close to people.” she sighed again, hugging her arms to herself, ”I have seen what he did, and I’ll admit it’s not pretty, but I won’t tell you exactly what because I want to respect his privacy… but he didn’t try to tell me it didn’t happen even before I saw. In fact, he blatantly told me when I got claimed, on my first night in the cabin, about the crimes that he did commit.” She sighed again, this time frowning a little, ”And he’s far from mad—at least I believe. He seems quite sane to me, actually. People just don’t get to know him. They judge him for his actions, not for who he is or how he treats people now.” After a pause she smiled up at Shu again, ”And if he is there, just treat him the same way you would treat anybody else and it should be fine!”

Kathryn’s eyes fell towards the ground as she instinctively drifted closer to the sun of Apollo, half skirting behind him every time they passed another demigod. She could hear the chaos that was going on, but didn’t dare look up to see what it was. She would probably hear about it one way or another later on, anyways. Her eyes moved up towards Shu’s, clearly making an effort to avoid glancing over towards the nearby movement, when he directed his attention towards the dark cabin that she called her home.
”Yup!” she chirped in a pleasant tone, clearly unperturbed by the dim and gloom of her cabin. ”I guess it’s really different from yours, huh?” she observed with a quiet giggle, shaking her head slightly, ”I honestly think the only reason why I managed to sleep in your cabin was because I was unconscious when you brought me there! It’s so bright… It’s nice and dark inside my cabin.” she mused lightly, rambling a little and giving Shu another rare smile when he moved ahead, opening the door for her.

The daughter of Thanatos could tell immediately that her brother was there, simply by the lived in feel the place could only have when there was somebody else there. She knew something was wrong because Simon wasn’t at his bed, or up and about, and she couldn’t hear him typing at his computer. And it was to that corner of the room where her eyes quickly fluttered. She saw the blood and the beginnings of Simon’s hair and his unresponsive face...
”Brother!” Kathryn voiced, her voice not quite at a shout, but still much more audible than the tone she took outside of her cabin as she moved towards him, glancing up as Shu strode up to him, tapping the eldest and only son of Thanatos on the face as if he were trying to wake a child.

Admittedly, she had doubts it would work; but, although Kathryn couldn’t hide the relief from her face when Simon’s eyes fluttered open, she didn’t release the breath she had been holding until Simon spoke. The daughter of Thanatos listened attentively to Shu, making a mental list as she rushed off to the back of the cabin, coming back with a rather large basin of warm water with some pristinely clean and folded cloths balancing over her arm. She set it down, careful not to spill, before looking up towards Shu.

”We don’t have anything like bandages here. Where is the closet in your cabin?” she asked, slightly breathless, listening when he answered and nodding her head. She paused, shooting up a quick begging plea prayer to he father to not take the life of her new friend, or her brother, more out of courtesy to whom she felt the cabin really belonged to than anything else. She moved towards the door, running out with surprising speed; if there was one thing she was confident in, it was her agility. She knew that it would take a few minutes to get to the cabin, and then just as long to find anything; and although the last thing she needed was for somebody to stop her from ‘trespassing’ with her luck she would be harassed… frankly, there was no time to waste on walking, jogging, or half-hearted running. Instead she went as if she were making an effort to break the world record, ignoring the stares of demigods that she flew past.
