Chapter One
“What do you think?” Taran quietly asked as he pulled his dark auburn hair into a short topknot, “I should go with him right?”
Arashi was silent as she considered it, “That's not a decision for anyone but you…”
“Your loyalties lie with him, then that is where you need to be,” Mamoru commented from where he was sitting cross-legged and checking his weapons, “My place is at Karura-dono’s side, so why question it?”
Both looked at the youth with the raven hair covering his left eye, “Your circumstances are slightly different,” Arashi pointed to the cross shaped scar on his right cheek, “You’re a born warrior, even though we’re called nin, we haven’t been in much battles at all because of Oji-chan and others protecting us, ours is a world of peace, while you and Yoru came into a world of violence. That place you have is because you appointed yourself her bodyguard when she was still in Auntie’s belly, the proof is on your cheek. Taran never really was in a fight, so how much help is he going to be?”
“You could have been a little less blunt,” the puppet master sighed at the midnight-haired girl, “But you’re right, what if I…”
“You will never know unless you try,” Mamoru said as he placed the inspected arrows into his quiver, “This,” he touched his cheek, “I earned the day I earned my name. It is a mark of my courage, one cannot call himself a man without either. Your Grandmother was a part of the Free Tribes, it’s time for you to undergo your own test.”
He placed his katana in it’s sheath and picked up his bow and got up to leave at that, and the other two watched him, “Mamoru’s right you know,” Arashi said, “You’ll regret it if you don’t go after him. And he needs the help training, that’s why he asked you to be at his side. Are you really going to just abandon him now that you know why?”
Taran stared at her, “You knew the whole time didn’t you?” he asked quietly, “What did you see that night seven years ago?”
She gave him a crooked smile and placed a finger aside her lips, “That’s a secret,” she said, “Come on, let’s go see Mamoru fail at conveying to Karu-chan how he feels again.”
“First tell me what you think of Yoru,” he said, his dark green eyes suddenly serious, “Rashi, I trust your judgment more than anyone’s…”
“More than yours?” she demanded with a hand on her hip, “You love him, you have since we were kids, what’s with all these doubts now? Spend every moment you have left,” her indigo eyes suddenly saddened, “Don’t let him disappear when he dies because you were scared. It’s up to you to make sure that he was remembered.”
“Maybe I’m tired of people dying on me,” he said, “Mom and Dad, and then Baa-chan…”
“Spent every moment she had with the ones that she loved,” she pointed out, “You could learn a lot from them,” with that she turned on her heel, “And you’re not the only one who lost people. So see you later. I’m going to watch the brave warrior get turned down again by his princess, you better decide what’s really important.”
He watched as she walked away, wincing as he was reminded that her fathers never came back from that strange mission, that she was not the same girl when she came back from wherever it was that she had disappeared to.
“What am I afraid of anyways?” he asked himself, the decision made.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I knew that I would find you here,” the small girl with curled crimson hair set in a loose side bun said as she walked out to the graveyard, “Daddy was looking for you.”
Chihiro nodded as her fingers ghosted over the memorial stone that stood in the center of the cemetery, “Keep an eye on us,” she said quietly before turning to her daughter, “Karura, are you ready for the journey?”
“It would be nice to see Grandfather Lee again,” she said thoughtfully, “He hadn’t been able to visit since my birthday…” her voice trailed off, “Mama, why are we leaving for Konoha now? Is it because Oji-chan died?”
“Suna is no longer ours to worry on,” she said sadly, “The council appointed someone very different from your grandfather as it’s Kage, and we’re the only ones left to remind them of his hero’s legacy,” she glanced at the inscription on the stone, “Already your cousins and aunts and uncles have left or are leaving.”
The girl chewed her lip, “But why chase us out? Wasn’t Oji-chan and Uncle and Auntie the ones that saved Suna all those years ago?”
“The Hidden Villages are no longer needed,” her mother said sadly, “Most of the other nations have reinvented them to be something else entirely, that is the price of peace. Suna didn’t have that luxury no matter how hard he tried. So when he was killed in the trade dispute, then the council took an opportunity,” her eyes closed as she remembered Kano’s ashen face when he had returned from the meeting.
“He saved everyone but himself,” he said quietly as he gave Mira the small bit of clay that had once been a part of Gaara’s gourd.
“His reactions were getting slow,” she whispered, “He…” it was Temari that wrapped her arms around her then, Chihiro was staring at the covered body as the tears came down her mother’s face.
“The sand went back to the desert,” she said, oddly calm at the death of one of her most beloved people, “It was what saved you and the others from the attack.”
Kano nodded then knelt with his head on the floor, “Chi, I…”
“What could you have done?” she asked, “We couldn’t stop Haru and Sora that day, what makes you think that you had any ability to stop Daddy from doing this?”
“The council is probably already meeting to decide on the next Kage,” Temari said, and both of them stared at the venom in her voice, “If things turn out like I think they will, I’ll be heading off to Taki, Mira, you come on with me, we’ll get Yuri and Chain to take care of us in our old age.”
“You think the council will absolve everything he’s done,” Chihiro said calmly.
“I know they will,” the blonde said as she closed her eyes, “It’s the perfect opportunity for them to retake power.”
“You go on,” Mira said quietly, “I want to spend the night vigil here.”
Temari gave her an odd worried look, perhaps because she guessed at what the fiery haired woman was going to do, but then slowly nodded and with a sorrowful face kissed her forehead and walked away.
“Kano, go and let the children know,” Chihiro said quietly, “I’ll spend the vigil with Mama.”
“Is Ara-chan coming with us?” Karura asked, breaking through Chihiro’s thoughts, “She acted like she wasn’t going to see me anymore earlier.”
“No,” her mother glanced briefly at two names on the memorial, “She has a quest to go on, and she decided that it’s time. Has Taran made his decision about it, do you know?”
“He’s not coming,” Arashi said as she came into the graveyard, “He’s got something too,” she smiled, “This is good-bye Auntie.”
“When you see them, make sure to give them my regards,” she said quietly as she turned away from the stone, “Are you certain about this?”
“The signs are all in place,” she shrugged, “And I’ll be going the first part with those two anyways. They need more help than they’ll admit.”
“Strange isn’t it,” Chihiro smiled sadly, “The ones that say that you have to find someone to live for are all gone now.”
“Not all Auntie,” Arashi said, then turned to Karura, “You take care of Mamoru, he’s going to have problems adjusting to the fact that there’ll be so much water there.”
“Among other things,” she said flatly, “If you and Taran are gone, then how am I going to keep him…” the older girl ruffled her hair.
“Let him worry,” she grinned at the glare, “You may not mind it so much after a while.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning Taran and Arashi watched as the last of their family left Suna, waving at Mamoru and Karura as they followed Kano and Chihiro through the trek to Konoha.
“What time is he meeting you here?” Arashi asked as the others moved out of sight.
“In less than an hour,” he said as he adjusted his black desert robes over his stillsuit, “I hope I was right in his measurements.”
“You were,” she said quietly, then her smile turned teasing, “After all, you did a very close examination of his body to take them.”
She laughed at his blush, then glanced behind them, “I’ll cover for us so they don’t know the direction we went,” she whispered, “Some of his spies are up there.”
“How do you know?” he asked with wide eyes.
“His brother spends every bit of time he gets here,” she pointed out, “If Sero hasn’t placed anyone, then he’s a bigger fool than I thought. And that’s why Yoru is taking this trip isn’t it? His brother’s getting a bit too powerful, he needs the training and what was left in the deep desert.”
“I know why he’s going, I know why I decided to go,” Taran stared at her, “Why are you going?”
Behind them the portal activated and both turned as Yoru stepped out, dressed in the same manner as Taran, and a serious look on his face.
“Because at the moment, we’re traveling in the same direction,” Arashi said with a smile her cousin had only seen on her face when she talked about that night seven years ago, one he knew was reserved for the strange being that he never met.

Chapter Two
“She’s weird,” Taran said quietly as he watched his cousin step away from the campfire to the desert beyond the cave they were staying in, “Sorry that…”
“I like her weirdness,” Yoru shrugged, “Besides,” his hand brushed against the other boy’s hand, “She’s considerate enough to give us some privacy.”
He turned bright red, “A…aren’t we a little…”
“Taran,” he leaned forward, “You know,” he breathed, “So let’s make every moment count, not worry about the small stuff,” he took his hand, tracing his own fingers around Taran’s, “We don’t have to go all the way,” he said quietly, “I just want to…” he blinked as the smaller boy suddenly embraced him, the tears that soaked through the linen shirt.
“Please don’t talk like you’re dying right now,” Taran whispered, “I promised that I wouldn’t interfere with that, but live… at least until that stupid fight and your body isn’t yours anymore. Promise me Yoru.”
“It’s a great honor…” his voice turned sad as he lifted the other boy’s chin, “Three more years, that’s all I can give you, are you certain that you’re alright with that.”
“So long as you actually live during those years,” he said in a low voice, “That way neither one of us will have any regrets.”
“Deal,” Yoru smiled as their lips met, his fingers danced over the puppet master’s hips, “Now tell me again why we bothered to get dressed in these linens after finally taking off those confining suits…”
“Do I get any chance to resist?”
“Not at all,” he licked the tear stained cheeks, “I only have three years to make sure that you never ever forget anything about me.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Going out into this deep of the desert without a stillsuit is asking for Death,” a voice said as someone stepped behind Arashi, “Even at night.”
“Which is why I came,” she smiled, “You’ve been avoiding me.”
“You’ve been becoming increasingly more suicidal,” Shi said flatly, “I figured that some distance might persuade you to finally acquire some common sense.”
She turned to him as she placed her hands on her hips, “You won’t let me back in your realm no matter what I do,” she snapped at him, “That’s why I have to go through all this trouble in the first place!”
He shrugged, “I promised them that you wouldn’t come to harm,” he nodded to the kitten on her shoulder, “That’s why I allowed you to keep him. Are you really so stubborn to insist on that delusion you had as a child?”
She crossed her arms, “I keep telling you that it wasn’t a delusion. I’m in love with you,” she smirked, “And I’m going to prove it by finding that sword you hid. And then you can’t deny me,” she placed a hand on his chest, “Or yourself anymore. So Imamiah, feel like a betting man?”
“I’ve already placed enough obstacles around it’s resting place,” he said as he opened his book, “Though in your case, I’m adding a condition. I have to Awaken to prove that what you say is true.”
“Which means that you’re going to have to break that promise and let me get hurt,” she teased.
“If you can manage to pull the sword from it’s resting place, then you will lose the protections I placed on you, excepting for the yokai guardian,” he said as he started writing, “You’ll have to somehow get through to me after that. It takes three days for the curse on that blade to fully take effect.”
“I refuse to go to your realm if you don’t recognize it,” she smiled, “So guess I’ll be heading off to where my parents are if you can’t Awaken, and we’ll just never see each other again.”
“Don’t be so arrogant,” he said as he started to walk away, “To go there you will give up every part that makes you who you are, my Sister’s realm is not kind even to those that she chooses. Are you sure it’ll be worth it?”
She watched as the wind picked up and he disappeared into the night, “Wonder if those two had enough time…” she said as she reached up to pet the kitten, “We’ll be going deeper in the morning, they won’t get a chance for a few more days,” Castor purred at her and she nodded, “Yeah, let’s give them a bit more,” she said as she sat down, “I want to watch the stars some anyways.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sero frowned as he looked at the information just given to him, “What do you mean by ‘they disappeared?’ I remember having no less than ten agents in place at those gates,” he glanced up at the shivering boy who was standing in front of him, “After that, it should have been a simple task.”
“T…there was a sudden sandstorm,” he wrung his hands, “A strange one, there was lightning that…”
“Are you suggesting to me that the reason my orders couldn’t be carried out was an act of god?” he said quietly as he raised an eyebrow, then slowly smiled as he held out his hands in defeat, “Well, in that case, I suppose there was nothing that could be done.”
The boy breathed an audible sigh of relief, “We were so worried that you would be upset Mas…” his eyes grew wide as he gasped in pain, his hands going to claw at his neck before he fell to his knees.
“How is it that you’re the only one of them that never disappoints me?” Sero asked of the red-haired girl that stood behind his dying minion.
Kotori reached up to place her hair stick back into one of her braided buns, “Probably because you have very little expectations when it comes to me,” she said shrugging, “Though to be honest, there is no real way of tracking them in that desert. Our intel does state that when Arashi stopped coming to school that she went to some sort of group that lives in the desert, and Taran spent much of his holidays the same way after his parents were killed. And no one could say for certain where the hell they were other than the desert.”
“Why couldn’t I get any followers to go after them?” he pinched his nose, “Do you realize that it’s possibly the only country that I failed to get a single permanent spy in? The ones placed in Suna were all placed there for that day only, visitors at the missions board posing as a group from River Country.”
She sat down beneath the tree with him, “There’s nothing but a wasteland there anyways,” she pointed out, “They might even get themselves killed.”
“Convenient as that would be, I still need my brother’s eyes,” a blade pressed against her cheek, “I suppose that’s another reason that you get to live. Your Uchiha blood makes you a nice little back-up,” he sighed, flipping the kunai away from her, “I’m torn now. He disappears in that desert or I kill him in three years. I’m actually not sure which outcome I like more.”
“You might be able to get a spy in there now,” she suggested, “The Kazekage did just die, I think he was the one making things difficult there.”
“It amazes me how that idiot brother of mine could just waltz in, but any of my agents were found out immediately,” he mused, then stood up, “No matter, we’ll move onto another plan of mine for right now and forget the cursed Wind Country. I always wanted to prove to Father that I could take over this place,” he looked around the gardens, “The Joint Academy would make an excellent base, so much better than the caves of Oto.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“It’s a dangerous wager Ariel. Imamiah’s right, I will have to destroy every bit of you, even if it is by your choice.”
“Don’t act like you don’t know what’s going to happen Mama. You predicted this years and years ago when you told me not to seek him out. ‘Only great sorrow waits for you there’ wasn’t that it?”
Yoru opened his eyes at the chuckle that came after that, staying very still as he listened to the two voices, one he was able to recognize as Arashi, but the other…
His arm protectively pulled the still sleeping Taran to him, something about that voice…
“Shall I make a new prophecy then? This journey that you find yourself on, nothing good will come of it. He’s one of the most stubborn people I know, even I can not promise that you’ll be able to get through.”
“Because you won’t tell me. And that’s fine Mama, I’m going to try anyways. I just want to be entirely sure what will happen if I fail, and I want you to say it where he’ll hear you say it,” there was a note of amused confidence in her voice, “And then, even knowing that, I’m going to prove that I am of Companion material. You said yourself that there’s a test, this one’s mine.”
“You drive a hard bargain little one. Fine, fail in this and you’ll go back to the peach tree that you were entrapped in before, only this time as a wraith waiting forever and watching forever and never able to talk or to do anything. He’ll pass right under your branches and never know. Fire and storm will not undo your curse, it is an eternity of silent solitude that will be yours alone. Arashi will no longer exist, the memories that will cement her to the lives she touched will fade away into oblivion. That is the price you will pay if you fail… an eternity of nonexistence that you will never escape from.”
Yoru sat up then, trying to see the cruel woman that spoke those words, and blinked to see Taran’s cousin sitting alone on the other side of the fire. “I heard…”
“We’ll need to be moving out soon,” she said cheerfully as she pulled on her stillsuit, “Did he tell you how we’re getting into the deepest part yet?” she checked the different tubes and then nodding, went to pick up the six long iron hooks that he had wondered at the day before when she had unrolled them from the scroll, “No, I guess not, since we’re hiding everything until it happens so Sero can’t find your plans out.”
“Who was in here?” he demanded.
“We won’t have a lot of time,” she said as she placed the hooks into three pairs, “You guys have the easy part, I’m the one who gets to summon it,” she shrugged, “My own fault for going with Auntie to the Free Tribes instead of going to school I guess. But wouldn’t change a damn thing anyways,” she looked up at him, smiling at the glare he was giving her, “That was my Mother. You want to see a life without any regrets? Then pay close attention to me, I’ll show you one that will burn out faster than a star, and I’ll love every minute of it.”
Before he could answer, Taran stirred, “Morning already?” he murmured, then blinked, “Arashi didn’t see us…”
“You guys looked a bit cold, so I covered you up,” she teased as he turned bright red, “And it’s not like I haven’t seen you naked before. Better make sure you clean up good before you put your suits on though, wouldn’t do to clog some of those tubes.”
“It wasn’t what it looked like!” he protested.
“A wild night of unabandoned sex?” she teased.
“It was exactly what it looked like then,” Yoru smirked, ignoring the blushing exasperated look that Taran threw him, “So how are we going into the deepest part of this desert?”
“Get in your suit, gather your gear, and take a pair of hooks and meet me outside,” she grinned, “You’re going to be in for a treat. And as an added bonus, you survive this, and you’re automatically an honorary member of the Free Tribes.”
“Of the lowest rank,” Taran said quickly, “You won’t be getting an army from this.”
“That’s fine, I don’t need an army,” he stood, “That’s what your puppets are for anyways.” He glanced over towards Arashi as she walked outside the cave, “Your cousin… has she always been a part of your family?”
“There was a storm a long time ago, and that was when the twins brought her in,” Taran went to clean up and get dressed, “I remember it because there was a tree in Yuri’s garden that I really liked and after that it was gone, struck by lightning or something like that. Why?”
“Did she say why she was helping us?”
“She said she was just going this way,” the younger boy looked up at him, “Yoru, something wrong? You can trust her, Arashi isn’t the type to betray family.”
“I don’t think that there’s anything that we can do anyways,” he said quietly then picked up his suit, “Help me get in this again? I had the hardest time yesterday.”

Chapter Three
“Your plan was a success,” Kotori said as she pushed up her glasses, “The Academy is now ours.”
Sero nodded, looking around at the ones gathered in the courtyard, “Almost too easy,” he said as he turned to go into the main office, now his own, “We would have had more of a challenge if the old headmaster hadn’t retired,” he glared at the man prostrating himself in front of him.
“It would have created a problem for me,” Kotori said as she crossed her arms, “We decided not to call attention to ourselves outside of the school, remember? And as easy as it would be to poison him, I would have upset some that I’m not ready to fight yet.”
“Shame that you cut your ties with Kiri, that might have been entertaining to overtake next,” Sero placed his foot on the man’s back, his eyes spinning red and black, “I suppose that I can leave Konoha alone for a bit longer, I want Otasan to watch me take it anyways.”
“So what is our next move Sero-sama?” she asked.
He looked at the calendar, “We overtake the rest of them. Starting with that cursed desert. I don’t want my brother being able to hide in a single sanctuary, I want him broken and laid out at my feet.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Just how far into the Wasteland are we going?” Taran yelled towards Arashi, “We’ve been on this worm for days!”
“Almost there!” she shouted back, “Yoru, you holding up back there?”
“I thought you said this was hard!” he tightened his grips on the hooks lifting the scale of the massive beast, “I can keep this up for another week!”
“That’s the spirit!” she laughed, “And look!” she pointed ahead of them, “That’s the resting place of Ketsueki-gatana! Remember, neither one of you touch it, I’ll make sure to lead you to something even more amazing!”
“Question! How the hell are we going to stop this thing?” Taran’s eyes widened at the drop-off looming ahead of them, “They don’t cover that in the legends!”
“This your first time too?” Yoru teased.
Arashi let go of the hooks in her hands, forming some quick hand seals, “Tenki!” she yelled as wind picked up around them, pushing forward into a wall that sparked with electricity.
The great sand-worm reared as it stopped suddenly, screaming as it started to head below ground, “Now!” she called, “Release the hooks from him or you’re dragged under!”
Both boys did as they were told, landing roughly onto the desert sands as they watched the last of the beast disappear beneath the dunes, “So you were busy in the last seven years,” Yoru commented, “And here we were being good about going to school. Seems like a waste.”
“Ara, you’re going to end up killing me on this trip aren’t you?” Taran muttered as he picked himself up, “And what the hell was that move?!”
She smiled, “We can’t go into the canyon yet, the path won’t appear during the day, only at the Soul’s Hour,” she narrowed her eyes, “There’s a good chance that Castor and I will be destroyed as we enter. Sure you want to come with?”
“I’m supposed to be getting stronger,” Yoru said shrugging, “And you promised to find me a powerful weapon, I figured that if this one rejects you, then I’ll just take it.”
She nodded, “Good! But I think that you’ll like the one I picked out for you a lot more.”
“In any case, let’s make camp and recover from the ride out here,” Taran sighed, “Maybe you should tell us more about this sword you’re getting out of here while we’re waiting,” he stared at her, “What did happen in that place that your fathers disappeared at? Chi came back and went straight to the desert with you and her family after that.”
“Not my place to tell,” she grinned as she took out supplies for the camp, “Besides, I think you two have more to tell me. I’ve been out of the normal world for a while remember?”
“I just think it’s weird that you guys returned three months ago,” he crossed his arms, “There’s a lot of trouble that might have been avoided if you stayed around in the first place.”
She looked up at him, “Like that mission that gone bad for your parents?” she shook her head, working on making the fire, “Exactly how would anything have changed?”
“Will you two stop arguing and fix something to eat,” Yoru said suddenly, causing both to stare at him, “We were on that damn thing too long.”
Taran sighed, “Fine, where the hell are we anyways?”
Arashi stood, her hands behind her back, “Haven’t you guessed? We’re at the entrance to the Valley of the Shadow of Death,” she smiled, ignoring the wide-eyed stares from the other two, “And the sword I’m getting was Shi’s first Companion. I’m going to wake her up and ask her to test my worth to become his second. This works out and she‘ll tell me where the most powerful sword that can be wielded by a mortal is.”
There was a long moment of silence before Yoru turned to Taran, “I’m beginning to see what you mean by her being weird,” he said quietly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“What do you mean we can’t interfere?!” Yuri snapped at the silver haired woman that was frowning as she sat on the branches of Taki’s tree, “We’re supposed to just sit back and let the world go to s**t?”
“I don’t like it anymore than you do,” Hoshi whispered as she gripped her naginata close to her, “But this time the gods aren’t involved, so I can’t be.”
“What about that crap saying that you’re supposed to keep the balance!” the green haired woman crossed her arms, “How the hell is…”
“There was just a golden age of peace,” the blond man sitting with them pointed out, “Almost thirteen years of it, so it makes sense that now there’s going to be a time of war again.”
Yuri clenched her fists, “So this is the same decision that the others like us make? We leave everything behind,” she glared at Hoshi, “This is what it means to be yours?”
“You can still choose to stay,” she said quietly, “I won’t hold it against you Ri-ri.”
“And leave you alone with my idiot brother,” she snorted, “Hell no. I’m just letting you know that I’m not happy with leaving things as they are.”
“We’re coming back to set everything right,” Chain grinned, “Just as soon as the time comes, isn’t that right Ho-oh?”
She nodded as she stood, “It might be a long while, centuries even, but we’ll definitely come back to this realm,” she swung her naginata, making a glowing silver door, “Still, I won’t force you to stay with me.”
Both siblings stood, each taking one of her arms, “We promised you a long time ago,” Yuri sighed, “Remember?”
“We were born together, we’ll all die together,” Chain added, “What makes you think that we’ll ever break that oath?”
Hoshi smiled, “Right,” wings unfurled from her back, “I don’t know why I bothered asking.”
All three stepped through the door before it disappeared into a brilliant flash of light.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Y…yoru,” Taran bit back a moan as his fingers intertwined in the Uchiha’s hair, “N…now might not b…be,” he gasped as he released into the other boy’s mouth.
“You were saying?” Yoru looked up, smirking as he licked his lips, “Have I ever mentioned how addictive you are?”
He blushed, “Every time you can,” he said with a small smile, then sighed as he was pulled down, their lips meeting as his hand was guided down towards…
Birdsong from around the camp perimeter sounded, and both looked up, a slightly annoyed look on their faces, “That’s Wren,” Taran said apologetically as he reached for his clothing.
“And she doesn’t make false alerts,” Yoru nodded, “You’ll just have to owe me,” he teased, smirking at the darkening blush on the other boys face.
They both were dressed and outside the tent in record time, “What is it?” Taran whispered, noting that Arashi had already put out the fire, and was pressed against a rock, looking away from the canyon into the deep desert.
She nodded in that direction, “We’re being followed, somehow they missed our camp.”
“I’m impressed that they made it this far,” Yoru said as he watched the two figures.
“They came in on a giant snake,” she whispered as she handed him the binoculars, “Recognize them at all?”
He frowned, as he looked through them, “Sero doesn’t have a spy that he trusts to summon… damnit.” he stood up, “Light the fire Arashi, and make sure we have plenty of food.”
“It’s not…” Taran started, staring at him with wide eyes as Yoru started waving towards the two.
“It is,” he said sighing as Arashi relit the fire, “And hopefully he had the good sense to get permission for this escapade.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“This is really good!” the boy with long black hair grinned as he ate the skewered meat that Arashi had given him, “Not as good as that fire-lady’s, but still, I’m happy, we were starving.”
Next to him the white haired boy nodded as he ate a bit more delicately, “How’d you not starve? It took a week to get out here.”
“You’re supposed to use the soldier’s rations,” Arashi smiled, “I didn’t know that Yoru had another brother, you’re not caught up in all of that mess are you?”
“Mess?” Doku asked as he took another skewer, “Oh, the fight?” he shrugged, “I’m not supposed to be involved at all, but it’s boring staying in Oto all the time.”
“You’re going right back,” Yoru crossed his arms, “It’s dangerous out this way.”
“I didn’t even know there was anything out this way,” Giri said thoughtfully, “One of Mom’s labs is a bit northeast of here, probably about six days if we walk, but I thought that was the furthest you could go into the desert,” he handed the rest of his food to Doku, “Besides, he has a training mission.”
Doku grinned as he handed a scroll to Yoru, “Dad’s orders,” he said happily, “Don’t know how, but Kimi-haha convinced him that you were best suited for it.”
Taran leaned over the elder brother’s shoulders, “That’s good news right? That he chose you over Sero for this?”
He chewed the inside of his cheek, “Maybe,” he glared at his youngest brother, “It’s still dangerous. You start falling behind in anything and I send you straight back to Lord Orochimaru.”
“You’re just mad that your alone time with Taran got interrupted,” Arashi pointed out as she stood, “Kinda wish that I got a few more hooks though, we’ll have to double up the next worm.”
“I suggest getting to that lab next then,” Giri said, “We can probably use some of the things left there. At the very least, restock our supplies.”
“Wait…” Taran stared at him, “Six days northeast of here,” he counted on his fingers, “You’re not talking about the area known as the Demon Sands are you?”
“Akira did mention that it had a weird nickname now,” he said thoughtfully, “Wonder why.”
“We’ll worry about it later,” Arashi said as she pointed towards the canyon, “Right now, we’ve got something more pressing.”
The others stared as the drop-off started to glow and a strange golden archway appeared.
“You coming?” she called as she headed towards the portal, “Better hurry, that door’s not going to be there long!”

Chapter Four
Kano walked beside his father as he looked around the rows of students in the courtyard of the dojo, “You have gotten many more students since the last time I was here,” he said smiling, “You finally achieved that dream then?”
Lee nodded, then leaned heavily on the cane that he had been using for the past five years, “Though truth be told, my greatest dream was achieved when you were born,” he said quietly, “Kano, how is Chihiro holding up?”
He was silent for a moment, chewing his lip, “She is withdrawing as she did when Haru and Sora…” he shook his head, “I am not strong enough,” he looked up as he felt the hand on his shoulder.
“It is not your strength that she needs in this time, but your heart,” Lee said gently, “That has always been why those three chose you as their closest friend.”
Kano’s eyes teared up, “Father…”
There was a loud crash before anything could be said, “Idiot!” snapped Karura as both men looked to see her placing her hands on her hips and glaring at Mamoru, “That was my sparring partner!” she pointed at the poor boy that was lying knocked out a few feet away, “He’s supposed to try and hit me! And did you have to destroy part of Grandfather’s dojo?!” she gestured at the shed that was in shattered timbers around the boy, the small ditch that now led to it.
“This one is too weak to train with the Princess,” he said as he sheathed his sword, “If you are to learn these techniques, then you should aim to learn from the strongest here.”
“I’m a beginner! You’re supposed to work your way up!”
“I am sorry about his behavior,” Kano started as he walked towards the two, “I will ask him to rebuild…”
“You know, he is correct,” Lee whispered to himself, “As she is my cute granddaughter, I should train her myself. I think Gaara would approve as well,” he chuckled, “I always wanted to see how well the taijutsu techniques I have work with the sand, and he never could withstand my training.”
“Her sand is a bit different from mine and Daddy’s,” he turned to see Chihiro standing behind them, her arms crossed, “It’s Grandfather’s gold dust that swirls in the grains she carries,” she nodded to the small clay jar hanging at Karura’s waist, “And I have only seen it used defensively, she hasn’t the ability to use it for attacks.”
“Then she is truly a product of love from your family,” Lee said smiling, “The powers of the generations choose to protect her. All the more reason for me to take on her as my student, I still have a duty of friendship to Gaara to complete.”
She smiled sadly, watching her daughter and foster son arguing with each other as Kano tried to calm them down, “Lee-tousan, he considered that duty fulfilled a long time ago.”
“My duty is to make sure that she receives the love and friendship that he once tried to deny himself,” he followed her gaze, “It is the sincerest hope that we have that our will is continued on through our children and children’s children.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“How deep is this canyon anyways?” Taran asked as he walked down the stairway behind his cousin, “We couldn’t see the bottom earlier.”
“I dunno,” she said sheepishly, “Last time I was here Shi teleported us in,” she patted the black kitten that appeared on her shoulder once they started down the stairs, “You can still go back if you’re scared.”
“No way,” he snapped.
“Besides, no telling what’s down here,” Giri said happily, “I’ve got to at least get a sample of the soil to bring back.”
“Think what she said about the place is true?” Doku whispered, “If it is…”
His friend smiled, “Don’t eat anything down here, just in case. And when we leave, don’t look back. This time we’ll just scout and come back later…”
“There aren’t any souls here, any that are still attached to our realm are all in Kin’ichi, and it’s buried far beneath the desert now,” Arashi called back, “Auntie was very thorough in that particular thing.”
“Is it possible then?” Yoru asked quietly, “My lord’s jutsu could become far more complete…”
She shook her head, “It’s possible, but not recommended. What you bring back might not be what you think,” her eyes saddened, “There’s a reason she did all of that.”
“Will you finally tell me what happened there?” Taran asked, and she shook her head, “Fine, so what is down here besides a weapon that you’re getting for yourself?”
“A pendant that gives immortality and eternal youth,” she said, “I figured that if you guys really do go through this thing, then you wouldn’t want him to just switch up in three years.”
“What?” the puppet nin turned to Yoru, “What’s she talking about?”
“How did you know that?” he narrowed his eyes, “That’s a secret known to only a handful that are alive.”
“Same reason that I know why your mom doesn’t have that problem, I have some information that I traded something for,” she hugged Taran’s neck, “Think I was just going to stand by and let my cousin follow you by himself? You guys go through this, I’m going to do everything I can for you. And that’s including making sure that your body isn’t just wasted and dumped.”
“Still want to know what the hell she’s talking about,” Taran said as he pulled her off, “You said that you told me everything.”
“It is something that doesn’t matter,” Yoru crossed his arms, “When my body becomes his, why should I care what he does with it?”
“Because I do!” he snapped, “And…”
“If it makes you feel any better,” Doku started before his mouth was covered up by Giri who glared at him before walking around the two and pulling Arashi with them to walk ahead.
“What if we got him the eyes another way,” Taran whispered, “If Arashi’s right about that pendant, then he won’t need to have your body.”
“There is only one other pair of Uchiha siblings left,” Yoru sighed, “And as willing as I am to fight my brother, my father is a good man that has already served his purpose for Lord Orochimaru,” he chewed the inside of his cheek, “And that’s if he and his sister fight in the first place, so far, he’s the only one that she hasn’t completely betrayed yet.”
“You won’t sacrifice any more than necessary,” the puppet nin looked down as his fists clenched, “But in the end I’m still going to be mourning you.”
“I promised you last night didn’t I?” Yoru wrapped his arms around him, “I’m living for you until that day. Lord Orochimaru will forgive this little escapade, even gave me an excuse to be gone until the time of the battle. Do you want further insurance that I’m yours until then?” he tilted Taran’s chin up to face him, “We…”
“The stairs are disappearing,” he pointed behind them.
The Uchiha whirled around, “Damnit!” he exclaimed as both started running down, “She could have mentioned that!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Karura picked up the ruby on her mother’s dresser, holding the necklace up to the light, “There’s a little bird in it,” she said, “It’s flying around… how’d they do that?”
Chihiro was quiet for a moment, a sad look in her eyes as she remembered the desperate pleas her aunt gave to the Eidolon who had merely bowed her head, taking her Beloved’s hands in her own and cast that final healing spell, one that took the last bit of light she had, sealing her away once again, and all to save him from the arrow holding the Heaven poison.
Instead of answering, she took up her shamisen, “It’s late,” she said, “Your Grandfather will pick you up before the sun comes up.”
“Can I have this?” the girl asked, “I know it’s Baa-chan’s, but…”
“Keep it safe,” she said quietly, “A dear friend gave it to her. Now you need to get some sleep,” her fingers strummed over the strings as Karura smiled and placed the pendant around her neck before leaving the room, “You go to sleep as well Mamoru,” she said without glancing at the boy crouching in the shadows, “Your training will start tomorrow as well.”
“I am uneasy about leaving her,” he said as he stood, “I promised that my place would be at her side.”
“And yet, she won’t be able to stand alone if you’re constantly protecting her,” the song on the shamisen intensified, “There is a war coming, the golden age is coming to an end, the signs are all pointing to that. It is why we came out of the desert after all. And you know next to nothing of this world, which is why I arranged for this. Karura will be safe here, you can rest easy and concentrate on this mission that I’m entrusting you with.”
He nodded, bowing, “As always, your wisdom is sound,” he said, then chewed his lip as he went to leave, “But this war, would it not be better to return to our ways of the desert?”
She shook her head, “We’re part of this world as well, it was something I was trying to tell the Tribes all this time. And since Taidana was sealed away as well, the protection he provided to the ones left is gone,” she sighed, “All the work my father and the others did…”
“I will retake their work back!” he exclaimed, “I won’t forgive those that waste the water of your parents!” his fists clenched, “Those who wasted the water of the Tribe…”
“Mamoru, your mission is to live,” she said, and he blinked in confusion at her, “The training that I want you and Karura to go through, it is so you are strong enough for this world. Rather than revenge, rather than justice, I want the two of you to carry on the water of the tribe entrusted to you, just simply that for the time being.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“How the hell are we going to get out of here?!” Taran yelled at Arashi as he pointed up the side of the canyon, “There’s no way we can scale that!”
“The exit is on the other side,” she pointed, “All we have to do is get through here and find the treasures before it opens again.”
He covered his face with his palm, “I’m going to end up killing you before this is over…”
“Do it by tightening up the puppet wires and making my limbs and head explode off of my body,” she grinned, “Make it nice and gruesome and completely unavoidable.”
“You have problems,” Yoru commented.
“Says the guy that’s on a quest to kill his brother and become the body to one of the Sannin,” she placed her hands behind her head, “Come on, the sword’s this way. Hear that humming?”
They followed her, “I kind of expected a bit more pizzazz,” Giri said as he looked around the stones that towered over them, “Not something that looked like a giant rock collection.”
“Looks more like a series of ambushes waiting to happen,” Yoru narrowed his eyes as they passed between quartz and obsidian, “There are too many shadows.”
Taran unfurled a scroll to let one of his mechanical birds out, “Sparrow will at least give us a warning,” he said as the bird flew over their heads, “Ara, I don’t hear that humming at all.”
“Shi’s playing with me,” she said, “Last time, it was a river with a series of islands.”
“It has occurred to you that we could be in the wrong place,” Yoru pointed out, “This…”
Sparrow cried out in alarm, “s**t!” Taran and Yoru backed against each other as the rocks started to move towards each other, “Damnit Ara!” the puppet master snapped, “You led us into a trap!”
“Not true!” her voice called out from the other side of the converged rocks, “We’re just looking for something different. Keep heading for the other side, be there by the time the door opens.”
“Like we have a choice,” Taran sighed, then looked behind them to see the rocks there had joined as well, “And we lost the others.”
“Not giving us much of a choice as to where to go is it,” Yoru nodded at the one path they had, “Might as well see if we can track down that pendant.”
From the other side of the rocks, Giri looked up in disbelief, “I wonder if this place changes all the time,” he said thoughtfully, “She said that we just had to be at the other side…” he turned to Doku, “Spit that out!”
“What?” the other boy said as he chewed on the rabbit, “I was hungry.”
“Didn’t you remember what I said!” he exclaimed, “If this is the land of the dead, you can’t eat anything here!”
“Why not?” Doku asked with wide eyes, “It’s good! Not a ghost at all, you sure you’re not supposed to eat anything?” he blinked, "Aren't you going to get a head-ache banging against the rock like that?"
"I'm trying to kill myself. Leave me be for a minute."

Chapter Five
"How can you say this is worth it?” the blond boy with ruby eyes asked from where he sat on the dresser, a book far too large for his small frame in his lap as he held a quill, “His name is already in here, if you deny your own prophecy, you know what will happen.”
Across the room the woman with long midnight hair stood over a cradle, a long dagger in her hand, “I thought that Death was not supposed to judge,” she whispered in a strained voice, “And I still say it is worth it, if only to set forward events that will return them to me.”
“Our kind are meant to be alone. We Awaken only at the destruction of our Companions, it is the curse that we have and the price that we pay,” he stared at her, the quill not moving for the first time since he had taken up the book, waiting on the decision that would be made today, “It is better to be alone.”
“There will be a day when even you find that eternity is too much to go through without the ones that will accept us,” she lifted the dagger, regarding it for a moment as the infant in the cradle started to cry, “If I choose this path, then you will find her along it.”
“I have no desire to bring another to my side,” he said, “That part of myself that I locked away a long time ago. None can retrieve it.”
She whirled to him, her amethyst eyes flashing with defiance as the first smile since her exile to the mortal realm, “I say that there will be one that does. Feel like betting on it Brother?” she tossed her weapon down, “This one that will cause such hardships, I give him and the rest of his race the power to escape their own fate if they can. I refuse to prophesize anymore for these mortals that do not heed my warning, let them reap what they themselves sow.”
The infant was screaming now, and the door opened as a man with strange eyes and a holy necklace ran into the room, “Oracle?” he asked, blinking at the empty room, then going to pick up the baby, “Has she…” he turned, his foot hitting metal, and he looked down to see the dagger lying on the floor.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He was certain that she didn’t see him as he watched, hidden away in the shadows of the caves. The quill moved as it always did, scratching it’s marks in the book, but for once he didn’t pay attention to the names and dates and facts listed.
At first the fascination was that she was a creation of Lucier’s, a strange use of powers that made no sense to him, why bother making something that would only be broken.
It was why he took her that night when she was a child, or at least that was what he told himself, it would only save a trip, logically she belonged to his realm already, when her world was exposed for what it was, she would join the ranks of the dead willingly.
He never expected her to have the strength or conviction to fight, not just to survive, but to transcend at an ability very few possessed. He had expected her to break… she instead saw him as the broken one, much as her “mother” did.
Her hair had gotten longer since the last time he had paused by her location, the dark seemingly purple strands flowed around her as she moved in the dance, her pale limbs had far more grace now than they did in her childhood, her blue eyes were just as bright, but now they had a strange wisdom to them, one that reminded him of Lucier’s, they seemed far too old for her small frame.
“Come on out Shi,” she said in a light teasing voice as she stopped her movements, and he frowned, wondering at how she sensed him, “How was my summoning dance?”
“It was every twelve beat that was repeated, still too rhythmic for the purpose that you have,” he came out of the cave, still writing in the book, “The worm will eat you without even rising to the surface.”
“It’s far easier for Auntie and Oji-chan to become a desert creature than for me,” she said smiling as she placed her hands behind her back, “I was told by the people here that my great grandmother was the last one that successfully summoned one, the dance is a tradition that no one here is willing to risk.”
“Failure does mean certain death that they cannot recover the water from,” he noted, “And risk of wasting water is more than enough to stop it, logically it’s the wisest move for a people that live in this harsh land.”
“Live or survive?” she asked as she unbuttoned her white tunic, letting it pool to the floor, then chuckled at his wide eyes, “Since you’re here, I’m going to try it again, without being hampered by it. Besides, it’s full of sweat, they’ll get onto me for wasting water there.”
“You’re still a child,” he said as he snapped his attention to the book, “Any and all eccentricities that you have will be attributed to that, at the most you’ll have to perform the cleansing ritual.”
“If they have that much of a problem, I’ll perform the changing ritual,” she said and he looked back up at her in surprise, “You didn’t think I knew about it huh?”
He stared at her, “That was a secret of the Free Tribes I had assumed lost. The last time it was done…”
“The entire clan that drank the result died, it was deemed to risky after that, the Aeon here found that he liked the mortals that served him,” she stepped into the dance again, “He is Sloth, and the ones that follow him have gotten too used to this trait of survival. I’m like Auntie, I mean to live and mean to fight for that life.”
“And yet, here you are, working on something that is only equal to certain annihilation,” he watched her movements, “Slightly better, but unless you can move with the winds and sands, you will never be able to control those creatures.”
“Show me,” she gingerly touched the book, “Will it matter if you place this down for a moment?”
“Yes,” the quill never once stopped, “The flow of time marches on, I must record it as it does,” he stood, “Perhaps if you learned to listen, you wouldn’t be as foolish.”
She raised her hands in defeat as she grinned at him, “You’re coming to see me again right?”
“There is no reason for me to,” he stepped forward, disappearing from her sight as the caves of the Wasteland faded, the dark coldness of his office coming into view.
Thankfully Kaze had finished his daily allotment of paperwork, he was gone, though the chaotic piles of scrolls and shredded parchment surrounding the desk remained until Shi raised his hand, letting shadows come and place the documents in their files, then retrieved a neat stack of fresh work for the next day.
As this was happening, he passed through an unseen door, walking through a seemingly endless hallway of shelves stacked with books and volumes that housed the records of time towards the last barrier to his own private area, only then placing the book down, letting it levitate in the darkness as the quill danced over it’s pages.
Why the obsession with her?
He stopped as the question hit him again, closing his eyes to see the girl that would not come into his realm despite the risks that she took, the accidents that should have resulted from her carelessness…
That strange grace she displayed in the dance made it’s way to his mind, yet this image was not of the child, but rather the woman that she would become in just a few short years, time that to him was just a breath away compared to the millennia that he had held his duties.
“She will pass into the realms beyond soon enough,” he whispered, “And then I will not be bothered by her oddities any longer.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She walked along the hidden path that led to the history of the world, a gift from her mother, one she refused to share the knowledge of with anyone.
The ones in the Tribes had enough problems with her Aunt, and those were merely memories carried in the sand, they were no where near the visions that she had.
Once again she found herself on the riverbank, this dream already known to her, but one that she returned to again and again, finding herself drawn to this point of time more than any other.
It was the birth of the one that she loved more than any other after all. His birth and his death, the beginning of the passage of time in the worlds, the first real battle between the Eidolons and the Aeons.
She never caught the exact moment of his creation, just that one minute he was there, staring with immensely sad eyes at the ones fighting in the skies above the river, his hand drawing out a blood-red katana as black feathery wings erupted from his back, he started to rise.
Death was born that day, and for a time he was uncontrolled, everything that he touched withered and decayed, anything he looked at was cut down. Even the immortals suffered, though he could not destroy them, not at that time.
It wasn’t until he found the True Names that Lucier interfered, something that made her wonder why her mother waited, why not act sooner.
So simple, she merely touched his temple, shared with him a prophecy of hers, one that Arashi could never see, and for a long moment he merely stood staring at her, “Even someone like me?” he whispered.
“Especially someone like you,” the small child-version of the Oracle smiled, “But there is a price.”
He narrowed his eyes, “It’s too high!” he cried, “Seal away the emotions, the part that longs for company, I don’t need that weakness any longer!”
“If I do that, then you really will become alone. There will be no place for you and the world will have to wait for another Scion for the balance to be returned,” her voice cracked with sorrow, “Do you realize the choice you make? The misery that you will have…”
“I seek to disappear from their sight completely. Misery has nothing to do with it,” he held out the sheathed katana, “Seal it in here. I’ll hide it away to ensure that the tragedy never occurs.”
“There is a price,” she said as she took the sword, “I will use a small bit of your power and emotions to create the missing realm. You yourself will create the land beyond the river, and take the souls of the departed there,” she unsheathed the blade, “Even if one comes that chains herself to your fate, you will never abandon your post… if she truly chooses your side, then she will stay there for all of lonely eternity.”
She always woke up from the dream crying, determined to once more find the sealed heart that she almost released years before.
Wiping a tear from her eyes, Arashi looked around, wondering just when she had fallen asleep down here at the bottom of the canyon, and blinked in momentary confusion as she saw that the giant rocks that had surrounded her were gone, replaced by a calm looking river and a few meters away, in the waters…
“Finally,” she smiled as she saw the island that contained the sheathed katana that held Shi’s heart. From her shoulder, the black kitten mewled, and her hand went up to pet him, “It’s alright Castor, I want to do this.” Placing him down on the bank, she undressed, folding her clothing neatly next to him, “No sense in getting them wet, besides, no one’s here to see,” she smiled as she knelt down and scratched behind his ears, “Wait here for me, I’m going to get it and come right back.”
He mewled once more in worry as she turned and stepped into the freezing river, the same that separated the mortal realm from the next.
Anyone else would have passed over as soon as their toe dipped into the waters. Arashi merely swum through, the protections placed upon her long ago still intact, until she stepped onto the sandy bank of the small islet.
The sword’s humming was the loudest that she had ever heard, and she walked forward, her hand outstretched to pull the blade from it’s sheath.
Her fingers brushed against the hilt, and then wrapped around it, she bit her lip to keep from screaming out at the sudden coldness and pulled.
“About time that you got here,” a voice said and she looked up to see the blond boy with red eyes that sat in the air above her, her eyes widening when she realized that she could see past him, “So you’re wanting to take that test that Sister set up. Simple enough,” he snapped his fingers and she felt a cold metal against her wrist, looking at her left arm, she saw the iron bracelet, the chain attached to it. “My other half is on the other side of that,” the boy said, “If you can manage to stab him with the blade, without harming anyone else with it… then you really are the one that we’ve been waiting for. Just one thing,” he smirked, “Your blood is needed to start this test. And blood must touch that blade, or it won’t be sheathed again.”
She nodded, hearing the unsaid rule, and turned the katana so that the point was touching the center of her chest, “So that’s how my protections are leaving me,” she said as she pushed the blade into her skin, letting the blood pour over it as she collapsed to her knees.
He didn’t say anything, just watched with his ruby red eyes as she picked up the sheath and snapped the katana back inside, then faded away as she flung the weapon over her back, wincing as she tried to stand back up.
“I really am dying,” she whispered as the world around her darkened, “Hate to break my promise to Yoru and Taran like this, but…”
“Oh, the test isn’t going to be that easy little girl…” a dark voice from the katana whispered, and suddenly she was aware of a giant beast next to her, her body being lifted up before her eyes closed and she surrendered herself to sleep.
When she awoke, she was back on the riverbank, Castor sitting on her chest where only an angry red line showed that she had ever had a wound there. He angrily mewled at her, and she sat up, looking over at her clothing and the sheathed katana lying peacefully next to them.
She turned to look at her left hand, tracing the bracelet and attached chain, “How long is it?” she asked herself, then stood, rubbing her shoulders, “No time to think about that now, huh Castor?” she asked as she started to get dressed, “We better hightail it to that exit so we can show the way out to the others.”
She looked downstream at the river, “I wonder how well they’re making out…”

Chapter Six
Taran whirled his head around in confusion as he found himself no longer in the canyon, but in his family’s home, sitting up in his own bed, “When did I…”
There was a humming coming from beyond the door, and he slowly got out from under the blankets, his green eyes narrowed at the slight glimmer of recognition at the song as he exited the room and went down the hall to the kitchen.
He stood at the archway there, frozen as he stared at the woman that was bustling about, “Mama…” he breathed.
Karin turned towards him, “Oh Taran! You’re up already!” she grinned, “I figured that I’d get a head start on dinner. Maybe this time I won’t mess it up, whaddya think?”
“But you’re…” he started, then jumped as he felt arms wrap around him.
“Isn’t it great that we have such a cute little brother Yomi?” sighed the elder of his twin puppet sisters.
The younger strawberry blonde placed her hand on his forehead, “You must have had one of those ‘nightmares.’ Yoshi, we might have to dissect his brain to see what was in there.”
“Nonsense!” the first twin exclaimed, “Taran, just tell us, or Yomi really will dissect you!”
“You’re all dead,” he whispered, his eyes wide, “Yoru and I…” he slipped out of Kiyoshi’s arms, “That mission that Dad and Mom went on…”
“Don’t be silly,” Karin said gently, “You know that I don’t go on missions, it’s too peaceful to risk my heart remember?” she placed her hand on his forehead, “Must have been some dream, you still feel a little feverish… maybe you should go back to bed?”
“Can you make me some of your ginger soup?” he asked quietly, and all three women blinked at him with wide eyes.
“You’re asking for Mom’s cooking?” Kiyomi asked in surprise.
Kiyoshi nodded, “Usually you accuse her of poisoning everyone…” she smiled, her hands going to her face, “Such love for his mother today!”
“Maybe you should skip school today,” Karin said in a worried voice, “Taran, you can’t be feeling well.”
He shook his head, “No, I better go in, Yoru’s waiting on me,” he turned and left the kitchen, completely missing the blank look the three shot at each other as he did.
When he was out of earshot, Kiyomi couldn’t hold in the question all three shared any longer, “Just who the hell is Yoru?”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He ran up to the hidden garden on the roof of the principal’s office, “Yoru!” he called, “You’ll never believe what…” he stopped as he saw the red-haired girl that pushed up her glasses as she looked over at him, “How’d…”
“Yoru? Is that your new pet name for me?” Kotori asked confused, “And Taran, you’re late! You said you would be here an hour ago!”
“How the hell did you find this place!” he snapped, his hand going towards his scrolls, “Did Sero order you to find all of his brother’s sanctuaries?”
She blinked in confusion, “Taran, what are you talking about? You showed me up here years ago, during the festival. Remember? You were the one that helped me out when I found out who my father really was.”
He stared at her, “The festival in kindergarten…” chewing his lip, “Where are Yoru and Sero then?”
“Who the hell are they?” she asked exasperated, “There was never anyone by those names here!”
He backed towards the exit, “That’s why they’re still alive…” he whispered, “That’s why you’re…” he turned and ran, “Kotori, we’re not friends!”
“What?” she followed him, “But we’re dating! You told me that you…”
“None of this is real!”
“How can you say that!” she yelped as they hit the hallways, “We…” he turned at the panic in her voice, “You said you loved me! That garden…” tears formed in her eyes.
He stopped, placing his hands on her shoulders, “You love someone else Koto-chan,” he said quietly, “Whatever memory you have isn’t real, this world isn’t real, it’s a genjutsu.”
“If this world is so fake, then why haven’t you tried releasing the illusion instead of running around then!” she snapped, “Gah! You’re such an idiot sometimes!”
He turned red, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head, “You know, that really is the first thing I should have tried…” he muttered, then formed a hand seal, “Kai!”
She crossed her arms, “Some genjutsu,” she huffed, “Taran, you’re just making this all up so you don’t have to admit that you’ve forgotten our anniversary.”
He shook his head, “No, this isn’t real,” he knelt down and pulled out his scrolls, “Did I ever give you a puppet?”
“Why would you do that?” she placed her hands on her hips, “You make chocolates and bento for me. I don’t want something like those dolls. Your birds are just too mechanical looking.”
He narrowed his eyes, “Then why would Nightingale still be missing if this world was real. That’s the one I gave to Yoru…” he looked up as he heard a very faint birdsong, “Koto-chan, I’ll catch you later. There’s something that I have to do.”
“But Taran!” she called as he ran off.
He stopped a few times, holding his hand to his ear whenever the birdsong seemed to fade, but he didn’t lose it, he kept following it until he opened a door and stared at the teacher that stood in the classroom.
It shouldn’t have surprised him as much as it did, considering everything else that had happened so far this day, but still… seeing Nikona-sensei give him the same heated glare that she always did before her death…
“Haven’t you figured it out yet?” a voice said behind him, and he turned to see the twin males with silver hair and fox ears, “Since Ara’s so intent on making sure that you’re happy before she finishes up with this world, we’d figure we’d give you a choice.”
Taran stared at the two, “Just what are you doing in my class Taran?” Nikona’s sharp voice asked.
“You can make everything like this?” he asked quietly.
“Not exactly,” one of them shrugged, “We can just let you stay here. It’s up to you though.”
“We can even make you forget,” the other added as he held up a vial of dark liquid, “So that you can be even more fulfilled. So what do you say? He worth all the lives that were lost since you met? The lives that will be lost in the future?”
A long moment passed as Taran looked at the vial, then he finally shook his head, “I’ll still regret it even if I do forget,” he said as he clenched his fists, “Yoru needs me… no, I need him. I’m not going to just abandon him for a dream, no matter how much I miss my family.”
“Good answer,” the two chorused, and the one holding the vial threw it behind him as the Academy faded away into a starlit darkness.
Taran’s eyes closed, and he started falling down, and the two fox-men watched him disappear from their realm.
“You would have had fun torturing him if he had chosen otherwise,” a voice above them said, and they looked up and smiled at the woman with the flowing midnight hair that sat above them.
“We would have really given your realm a reason to be called Hell,” they chorused as their lips curled into their trademark crooked smiles, “Maybe that’s why we made the test so damn easy.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Taran!” Yoru placed his hand on his cheek, “Come on, wake up!” His red eyes searched for any sign of life, the sharingan activated almost as soon as the puppet master slipped and fell into the river, he had managed to pull him out without touching the water himself, but the snake that he had summoned was now a skeleton.
The dead serpent that still laid halfway into the waters made him even more nervous for Taran’s life, on his shoulder Nightingale was perched, singing that reassuring lullaby that always seemed to calm him down, but even with the puppet, he was on the verge of angry tears, “You can’t die until after I do! You promised!” he snapped.
“Nnngh,” he smiled as he watched the younger boy stir, take a gasping breath as he suddenly sat up in a coughing fit, “Yoru?”
“How dare you nearly die on me!” the Uchiha said as he gathered Taran into a tight embrace, “I would not be able to continue on with my duties if I had to go at them alone, you’re not allowed to leave me.”
“Sure you would have,” he said, happily wrapping his arms around his waist, “If anything, I’m a distraction.”
“One that keeps me focused,” Yoru said, then reluctantly parted, “The time for the exit to open up is almost here, we still haven’t found that jewel Arashi told us about.”
“I guess at this point we should just hightail it to the other side of the canyon,” Taran sighed, “Sorry that…” his eyes widened and he reached into his pocket, pulling out a large jade-green stone, “The hell…”
The two exchanged a glance, “Maybe it got caught there when you fell into the waters,” Yoru started, then turned to look at the river, blinking in confusion when he saw the wall of the canyon that was previously far away from them, “How the hell…”
“That’s just how things work here,” a voice said and they turned to see Arashi perched on a large rock a few feet away, a strange sword slung over her back, “Now to wait on Giri and Doku to get here.”

Chapter Seven
Shi was in the library, placing a full volume on the appropriate shelf as another book appeared under his arm.
A crash directed his attention to the room before the library hall, and he sighed in defeat before walking to see what the commotion was now, not entirely surprised to see Hayato hanging upside down in a primitive rope trap, “Do I want to know?”
“I was trying to catch whoever leaves the paperwork,” Kaze said sheepishly, “I forgot to account for the chaos theory.”
“This is the Realm of Death,” Shi waved a hand and let the Uchiha come crashing down, ignoring the string of curses that resulted, “Why do you care about who the servants here are?”
“And you could have given me a warning,” grumbled Hayato as he brushed spider webs off of his arm.
“It’s boring here,” Kaze sighed as he leaned his head on his hand, “Can’t you give me something a little more…” he blinked, “What’s that?” he asked pointing at the chain now attached to Shi’s left wrist.
“Nothing that concerns…”
“Master!” a girl with disheveled raven colored hair and golden eyes ran into the room, “Mother just gave away the second treasure that’s hidden in our realm!”
“I’m well aware of the situation there Mnemosyne,” he said quietly, “Lethe has already left to retrieve that and to ensure that those trespassing will not leave.”
Her eyes widened, “But that’s cheating! It’d be like she never found the sword at all!” she turned to Kaze, “You agree right? He’s got to play fair!”
“Forgive me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it Sister that stacked the deck concerning the matter regarding the rebirth of her Companions,” Shi opened his book, “And if I remember correctly, you were the one she used to ensure that it would happen.”
“That’s something different! We had to do it to refill the Guf!” she crossed her arms, “Besides that was concerning the living. You’re Death, aren’t you the ultimate fairness?”
“Hey kid, if I take your side, you’ll nab me some of the sake left to the ancestors right?” Hayato asked, and she grinned as she nodded, “I agree with everything that she just said!”
“I just want to know what’s going on,” Kaze sat down cross-legged, “Why do you have that chain anyways?”
“It’s attached to his true love!” Mnemosyne said happily, “Except he’s such a poopy-face that he won’t let her do it,” she covered her mouth, “Oh no! You sent Lethe!” she grabbed Kaze’s arm, “Come on, we have to hurry!”
“You’ll give away the third treasure?” Shi asked as he started writing.
She glared at him, “If it’s give up the treasures or watch your loneliness for another few millenia, I’d rather give them up. Mother was right and you know it.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Hey! That rock looks like a giant p***s!” Doku said as he pointed, “Giri, I think we passed it already.”
“But wasn’t it to our left?” Giri frowned, “We’ve been walking in a straight line, so how did we…” he cocked his head to the side, “Hear that?”
“Sounds like running water,” his companion grinned, “A river! I bet we can follow it to the end of the canyon!”
“If it works like that here,” mumbled the white haired boy as he stuffed his hands in his pockets, “Better than wandering around here though.”
Doku nodded and both followed the sound, blinking when the rock formations completely disappeared, replaced by dark grass against a wide, seemingly black, river before they took three steps.
“If I wasn’t being crushed by an impending feeling of doom, I might actually enjoy this place,” Giri commented.
“Wonder what makes the river so dark,” Doku said as he tilted his head and placed a finger in his mouth, “Hey, think it’s blood?”
“It’s memories,” a voice said, and both whirled around to see a girl with a neat raven colored bun and spotless linen robe, “If you want to reach the other side of the canyon, you’ll have to cross. Luckily for you,” she pointed and as both turned back to the river, a dock with a boat appeared, “I happen to be the ferryman and guardian of this river.”
“We each have to pay two gold coins?” Giri reached into his pouch, “Doku, I’ll cover you.”
“This is one of those bad ideas isn’t it?” the long haired boy whispered.
“What choice do we have?” he hissed back, “The terrain is playing with us, this is the best chance we’ve got so far. You’re the one that wanted an adventure, remember?”
“This way gentlemen,” she said as she held out her hand, and both blinked, wondering when it was she had stepped past them to the boat.
Giri placed the four coins into her palm and helped Doku into the boat, “Do you ferry everyone across?”
“Grandfather has placed my sister and myself in charge of this, since he no longer cannot perform to the Master’s wishes,” she said simply as she began rowing, “It is luck that I am the one who saw you and not her.”
“How so?” Doku asked with wide eyes.
Her golden eyes began to glow, “Because she is entirely too soft to be a ferryman of the dead. She lets her passengers keep their memories,” she dropped the oar into the river, “I take the pain of those useless things away.”
Black water surged over them and suddenly both were beneath the current.
Giri looked wildly around in the dark water, seeing Doku drift away from him, and kicking his legs, started swimming towards the other, managing to grab hold of a pale arm.
“Why can’t I destroy yours!?” he turned to see the girl in front of him, her hands suddenly on his throat, “If I can’t take your memories, then I have to make sure that you never leave my waters!”
His vision darkened and he was only vaguely aware of her grip suddenly loosening and the sensation of being lifted from the river by talons gripping into the flesh of his shoulders.
“Who are you?” he wondered at the effeminate looking boy with dark hair.
“I could ask the same of you,” the boy said with wide gold eyes, “I didn’t think anyone was supposed to still be here.”
Giri’s eyes shot open to find the disheveled twin of the ferryman looking down at him, “You’re alright!” she said happily, “I knew it was a good idea to place the mirror in your eye!”
“Doku?” he sat up, rubbing his left eye that was suddenly stinging.
“He’s fine, I gave him some of my waters,” she smiled, “But you didn’t need any, even without me placing the mirror in. Guess that’s because of your mom.”
He stared at her, “You know my parents?”
“Wanna see them?” her voice dropped, “It’s a little against the rules, but I’m mad at Master, and I want to make a deal with you.”
A few hours later Doku stirred, slowly sitting up and rubbing his eyes, “Giri… what just happened?”
“A great many things,” his friend said wistfully as he stared off into space, then turned to smile at his friend, “Ready to meet back up with the others?”
He nodded and Giri took his hand and both started walking again, only to blink as the scenery changed again and they were face to face with the other three, and outside of the canyon.
“Now where are we?” Yoru growled.
Arashi pointed, “Near a battlefield, hear that? The air’s thick with blood and fire too, so it’s a pretty big one.”
“Wait…” Taran’s eyes widened, and he pulled Yoru after him as he climbed over the next dune, his green eyes widening with fear as he saw the burning stones, “Arashi… it’s Suna…”
She nodded, “Figured as much,” he glared at her, “You didn’t think that Sero was going to just twiddle his thumbs while Yoru was off training didn’t you?”
“He probably sent Doku after me to get rid of him as well,” Yoru frowned, “Now what?”
“That sword I promised you is in the ruins of Uzu no kuni, stuck in a stone anvil,” Arashi adjusted the strap to her katana and started to walk towards the fires, “This is where we part guys, someone’s waiting on me.”
“No,” Taran said, and she turned to him, “At least help me get my sisters out of the vaults.”
Her blue eyes were filled with a strange emotion as a long moment passed, “… alright,” she finally said.
Giri watched with wide eyes, remembering Mnemosyne’s words.
“Whatever you do, when she leaves, you must let her go. If she stays with your group, then she will most certainly fail… But if it can’t be avoided, then make sure that she does nothing to defend herself or others. If she raises a hand to fight, then she loses everything, and I will come and take the mirror, your friend, and your memories that Lethe could not retrieve."

Chapter Eight
The three moved quickly and quietly through the now decimated village, Taran leading the way, as they headed towards the Kazekage tower.
When they got across the street, they stopped, staying in the shadows of the alleyway as they surveyed the damage.
“This is a trap,” Yoru said quietly, “Specifically aimed at us, they knew that you would try and retrieve them if their resting place was compromised.”
“Just how did they find it though?” Taran frowned, “Dad said that no one knew of that place.”
“They don’t,” Arashi whispered, “They were trying to smoke Yoru out of the desert, figuring that you would come here if the village was burning, they hedged a bet on something being here that you didn’t want to lose.”
Both boys stared at her, then turned to each other, “Maybe we should have…” Taran started.
“I’m not risking Doku’s safety,” Yoru interrupted, “I already did enough by allowing him to follow us into that canyon.”
“Not like that they’ll easily find that camp,” Giri piped up, “We can still help though.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Yoru crossed his arms, “I…” he whirled around to see the two younger boys behind them.
“It was boring there Aniki,” Doku grinned, “And if I wanted to be bored, I’d have stayed in Oto.”
“Do you have any idea how dangerous it is here?” the Uchiha hissed, “I thought at least Giri had some sense…”
“Can’t be helped,” Arashi said as she rubbed the wrist where the invisible chain was, “We better get going, not nice to keep them waiting.”
“If anything happens, we regroup back at the campsite?” Taran asked Yoru, who nodded, “Doku, he’s right, you could get hurt.”
He stuck out his tongue in response, “I’m tired of being left behind by everyone.”
“We’ll stay out of the way,” Giri added, “We might even be able to help in the fight.”
Yoru sighed in defeat, “Fine. We’ll call this your first lesson then,” they started to move across the street, “Stay with me. Taran, you and Arashi run ahead to where they are. If it’s a trap, there’s no reason for us all to get caught.”
“I’m leaving Wren with you,” Taran said as he pulled out the scroll containing his bird puppets, “If anything happens, she’ll let Sparrow know, and vice versa. That way, none of us will get caught for long.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arashi opened the door to the Elder’s room, “Clear,” she said turning to Taran, “How long will you need?”
He held up the two scrolls he had taken out, “Just long enough to seal them here,” he whispered, his green eyes resting on the stone marker with the rune that stood in the center of the room, officially a memorial to Chiyo.
Blinking away tears at a happier time, he stepped forward, lifting up his hand to touch the runes on the stone…
“Seems like we need to give that person who gave us the information a treat,” a voice said and both looked up to see Kotori leaning against the far wall.
“I thought you said it was clear,” Taran hissed to Arashi.
She looked past Kotori, “The curse really is taking effect,” she whispered, “I can’t see anything but the other realm…”
“Still the same weird girl that she was in kindergarten I see,” Kotori reached up to her hair and pulled out one of her sticks, “Doesn’t matter, I kill you, then Yoru suffers and I prove my worth to Sero-sama.”
“Koto-chan, you were so cute once,” Arashi said as she stepped forward, her eyes still unfocused, “What happened when I was gone?”
“Don’t even try it Ara, she’s too far gone to his side,” Taran reached for one of his scrolls, “You’d think as much as she hates being lied to, she wouldn’t go for him though.”
“On the contrary, Sero-sama has been completely honest with me. I know I am absolutely nothing but a pawn, that all he cares about is proving himself capable of ruling his father’s empire,” she laughed, “Look around, he’s the one that did this! This is all the truth I need, absolute destruction of everything that was held dear by those that hurt me,” she lunged towards Arashi, “And you hurt me the most! You were my best friend and you abandoned me!”
The midnight haired girl stood there, “Was I?” she asked, “I don’t remember anything that happened before my fathers went away.”
“You lie!” she exclaimed, “Where were you when I found out why they hated me?!” she stabbed the stick forward, blinking when she saw that it went into Taran’s shoulder, not Arashi.
“Why didn’t you avoid that?” he winced as he pulled the stick out, “Ara, you’re going to die if you don’t get it together.”
“Isn’t that my plan?” she chuckled as she tore a piece of her shirt to wrap his wound, “I want to die, remember?”
“What does she mean by that?” Kotori asked as she stepped back, “And why aren’t you dead from the poison?!”
“You ever had his mom’s cooking?” Arashi paused for a second, “He’s close…”
“You gonna tell me why you’re acting weirder than usual?” Taran asked in a worried voice.
“I never told you, did I?” she smiled wistfully, “Better not lose him Taran,” she drew the sword, rushed towards Kotori, swinging it forward.
She brought up a kunai in defense, her eyes wide with surprise as Arashi went past her, driving the sword into an invisible enemy, “How the hell did you miss?” she hissed as her weapon drove into the girl’s chest.
“Not aiming for you,” she smiled as she collapsed to her knees, “Did my part Shi…”
The blond boy invisible to all but her eyes glared at the sword that had impaled the large book in his arms, “I still haven’t recognized you.”
“Not much time left,” she whispered, barely aware of someone gathering her into their arms, the warm liquid pooling around her.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“If you two had waited where we left you, they wouldn’t be in danger!” Yoru snapped as the three rushed after the bird puppet.
“If we had stayed behind you would be caught in the trap as well!” Giri pointed out, “You’re just mad because you’re worried about him.
“Besides that, I’m tired of everyone treating me like I can’t do anything,” Doku added, then looked over at his white-haired friend, “Everyone besides you I mean,” he turned back to his brother, “Aniki, I really can help!”
“Why is it that you want to help him so badly and not your other brother?” a voice said, and they looked ahead to see Sero standing there, “Doku, don’t you think that you can better learn to rule from the one who already has an army?”
“I’d rather have followers like Dad’s,” he said, “They love him. All of yours but one fear you and talk about you behind your back.”
“They’ll leave you at the first chance,” Yoru said as he stepped between Sero and the younger two boys, “Do you really want to have our fight now?”
“They won’t have any place to run to,” Sero laughed, “While you’re training, I’m taking over the world! At the meeting in three years, I’ll lay it at Father’s feet along with your eyes and I’ll be the one chosen to rule over his empire!”
“You do this for your own purposes,” the elder Uchiha smirked, “I won’t have any guilt about defeating you then, you’re still not worthy to be the new vessel.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Stop crying,” Kotori said as she took the kunai from Arashi’s chest, “You’ll be joining her soon enough anyways.”
Taran hugged his cousin’s body, “You people don’t get family do you?”
“My family betrayed me!” she snapped, “Keeping the truth from me while my stepfather and stepsister gave me nothing but hate and misery!”
“And yet your brothers tried to protect you because they loved you,” he said, brushing the hair from the fading blue eyes, “Hang on Ara, I’ll get an antidote.”
“My poison kills instantly. It’s a wonder that she’s not dead already,” Kotori said sweetly, “I didn’t know that you two had such a good resistance to it,” she placed the kunai back on her belt, “I’ll just have to think of another way to kill you. Sero-sama said to make it as painful as possible.”
“Have you slept with him yet?”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” she snapped.
He glared at her, “Exactly what I said. Do you even know who he is?”
“So he’s the son of the snake sannin,” she shrugged, “No big deal, in fact I can appreciate everything he does even more.”
“If he’s Orochimaru’s son, then where did the sharingan come from?” Taran asked, a slow crooked smile forming on his face, “Yoru and Sero have the same mother, and the same Uchiha father. So have you slept with him yet?”
She frowned, “He was grown in a tube. The labs in Oto had some Uchiha dna, it’s simple to do that. My mother grew fetuses all the time.”
“Neither one of them were grown in a tube,” she took a step back, not liking the strange look in the green eyes, “Answer my question.”
“I…I don’t want to,” she said, then reached in her pouch for a weapon, gasping when her arms were grabbed by invisible wires.
Taran picked up Arashi, “Hang there and think about it,” he said as he flexed his fingers and she was lifted up.
“When the hell did you set this up?!” she yelped and he gave her a sorrowful look.
“When you were killing my cousin,” he adjusted the midnight haired girl, “Hang on Arashi,” he whispered, “Giri’s got some medicine, he just has to.”
She didn’t respond, her eyes stared at a point past his head, at the invisible boy that kept writing in his ruined book, her hand reaching out to him.
“…please…” her breath was ragged as Taran ran through the corridors.

Chapter Nine
“Do you think me cruel?” the snake sannin said as he stared at the eldest of his Uchiha sons.
“Yes I do my Lord,” Yoru said truthfully, causing a collective gasp from others in the audience chamber, “And yet I still offer my life to you.”
Orochimaru smiled, “There is a chance that you will lose this game. I can give you an advantage.”
“Give it to Sero,” he said, “I will not be worthy unless I earn the right to be your vessel on my own.”
“You and Kimimaro are like broken records, talking about worth and vessels,” Sero snorted, “I suppose I should be grateful that the two of you are so blinded in your loyalty, it makes it easy to predict your moves.”
“And yet you still resorted to this when you lost my movements in the desert,” Yoru pointed out, “Our fight isn’t for three years, even you won’t go against our Lord’s wishes. So what was your real goal here?”
“Simple. I have a rare chance to make you suffer. Kotori should have finished the job by now,” he looked past Yoru to Doku, “It’s time to come home little brother.”
“I’m not,” he said as he grabbed his eldest brother’s arm, “Dad said that I could come out and train.”
“Exactly what will that loser teach you?” Sero stepped closer, “He refused to even learn how to give the curse mark, he only has one minion.”
“I have no minions,” Yoru corrected, “Those that come with me are my equals, and I only ask that they offer their loyalty to our Lord upon my death.”
“Then you admit that you will lose to me! Why drag things out any further then, just hand over your eyes now so that I can offer them up and receive my position as ruler of this world.”
The eldest brother’s eyes widened, “You have no idea…” he whispered, “Kabuto never told you just what it was that we’re fighting for.”
Before anything else could be said, there was a loud bang and the room filled with smoke, causing Sero to burst into a coughing fit, growling when the room cleared, and the other three were no where to be seen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“This is not honorable!” Yoru snapped as he followed Doku and Giri.
“Think of it this way, we’re going to rescue Taran!” Giri called back as he drew another smoke bomb from his pouch, throwing it down a corridor as they passed it, “You heard what he said!”
“Besides, you’re still fighting him,” Doku pointed out, “Just in three years, like you’re supposed to,” he grinned, “This is getting even more fun! Giri, let’s go to that lab next!”
“We might have to,” Giri whispered as the three saw Taran running towards them, the all-too still Arashi in his arms, “Doku I need some of your chakra,” he said as he reached into his pouch again, drawing out a scroll, “Uncle Akira said I could only use this in emergencies but…”
“Do it,” Yoru said as he ran forward to Taran, taking his lover’s cousin from him, “Are you hurt?”
“Just a wound on my shoulder,” he panted, “It was poisoned, so we probably should check it,” he looked at Arashi, “I sealed up the wound as best as I could, and she’s still conscious… barely.”
“Hold on!” Giri said, “Both of you touch Doku’s shoulders,” they did so and he formed some hand seals, opening the scroll as he nodded to Doku who took a deep breath and bit down on Giri’s shoulder.
A flash of dark light later, and they were blinking as they looked around the laboratory that they were now in.
“Put her on the table,” Giri said, “Doku go get Uncle,” he rolled up his sleeves, “You two wait outside the room.”
“Is there…” Taran started and the younger boy glared at him, “Right, going,” he said as he and Yoru started out.
“Wait a second,” he looked back, “Go with Doku and get Uncle to look at your wound.”
He waited until they left before lifting up the cloth sealing the wound, “Yup, that’s fatal.” he said, then looked up to the blond man standing across from him, “You’re bigger.”
“Shi,” Arashi panted, “Please, all you have to do is say it.”
He ignored her, turning a page in his book, “Uh, wouldn’t that be easier without the sword sticking in it?” Giri asked, ignoring the glare he received for the comment, “And why can’t you say it? She’ll be gone soon.”
“Then she’ll be one less nuisance for me to deal with,” he said as he wrote, “Your parents are bad enough,” he looked up, “I’m not going to have to deal with you as well am I?”
“I’ve got a nice snake all set for Doku,” he said grinning, “And I was thinking of getting something for Yoru so Taran won’t be all sad.”
“That whole thing is gonna end so badly,” Arashi agreed.
“Weren’t you dying?” Shi snapped as he went back to his book, “Ah. Sabaku no Arashi, time of death was three seconds ago. Great. Because of you, I’m behind.”
“So I’ve got two more days to convince you? Or just a few minutes?” she asked as a black cat appeared next to her, “Hey, Castor! I haven’t seen you since the canyon!”
He meowed angrily at Shi and she went to scratch him behind his ears, “I’m still in my body?” she asked.
“Looks like it,” Giri said, “So at the rate of decomposition, you should have until your brain decays,” he tugged at the chain connecting the two, “But it looks like he can’t go anywhere right now.”
“I’m going to have to punish her for giving you the mirror,” Shi muttered, “Ariel, I have no problem with you disappearing from my sight completely.”
“Then why are you still here?” she asked, “That chain can’t hold you,” she smiled, “You even used my real name that’s not even in your book.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Ouch,” Taran winced as Akira stitched up his shoulder.
“How many times have you bitten him?” Yoru asked Doku as the two sat across the room.
The younger boy scrunched up his nose in thought, “Uh… about seven times now I think,” he shrugged, “It’s the easiest way to give him chakra.”
“And you’re not worried about what the consequences of having at least seven curse marks will be for him?”
“I’m more worried about those nightmares that he has,” Doku said, “Four of those were to wake him up. I don’t think the curse mark affects him like it’s supposed to,” he chewed his bottom lip, “You can run away. I won’t tell anyone where you are.”
“That isn’t an option for me.”
“Dad has all sorts of Uchiha DNA,” he exclaimed, “Kabuto showed me all the test tubes! And besides, Dad wants you to…”
“These eyes belong to him,” Yoru said as he ruffled Doku’s hair, “Running away is not an option, I’m honored to give my life to my Lord,” he looked up as Taran walked to them, “Were you able to retrieve them?”
“I had just enough time,” he said as he patted the new scrolls on his belt, “Luckily I already had Dad’s notes,” he frowned, “I want to go check on Arashi.”
“Can’t rush Giri,” Doku commented, “Though he might be embalming her right now. Or barbequing. I’m never sure which.”
“You’re not eating my cousin,” Taran said, then turned to Yoru, “What’s our plan now?”
“We go and find that weapon she told us about,” he said quietly, “And then, we’ll train. Now that I know that Sero isn’t simply waiting around.”
“You knew that beforehand…” Doku started.
“I want to win this fight honorably, even knowing that he’ll cheat,” Yoru continued, ignoring him, “I want you to promise me once more Taran, under no circumstances will you interfere,” he turned to Doku, “And I want the same promise from you.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kotori cried out as she was slammed against the wall, “It was such a simple job for you!” Sero snapped at her, “Kill Taran. A weakling that has never been able to stand on his own!”
“I’m sorry milord,” she gasped, “I…”
“Useless,” his hand grasped her neck, “Though I do suppose you took care of one rat. That’s enough for now at least,” his lips brushed against her ear, “I’m going to give you something that I never give out… a second chance.”
Her eyes widened, “Sero?”
“Don’t get me wrong, for failing me, I’m going to break you,” he hissed, “We’re going to Kiri next, and I have a very special job for you.”
“Anything,” she breathed, “Just name it.”
“You’re personally going to kill the Mizukage,” he smirked, “And to make sure you don’t fail me a second time,” he bit the area between her shoulder and her neck.
She screamed, wondering if this sensation was pain or pleasure, a small part of her confused as to why she couldn’t even tell the difference anymore.

Chapter Ten
“Giri, open up,” Doku called from the hallway, “It’s been three days.”
A long moment passed before the door to the laboratory opened a crack, “She’s almost convinced him,” he whispered, “I want to see how it ends.”
The long haired boy blinked at him, before looking past into the room, “Giri, no one’s in there.”
“Sure there is, you just can’t see everyone,” his friend smiled, then quickly his face grew worried as he glanced back, “Her body’s already disappeared, if she can’t get him to admit it, then she’ll be gone. Taran’s already forgotten right?”
“Forgotten what?” Doku asked in confusion, “Who’s body?”
“See!” Arashi called from where she was sitting on one of the counters, “The living ones already are acting like I never existed,” she crossed her arms and smirked at Shi, “Told ya Mama doesn’t play around. You heard what would happen if…”
“You are sadly mistaken if you think a threat like that will move me,” he said as he wrote in his book, “If anything, that’s an incentive. The paperwork will even take care of itself.”
“Yeah, but did it ever occur to you that my Dads would still remember and probably would have permission from Mama to wreck havoc in your realm?”
“They can’t do any worse than what Kaze and Hayato do on a daily basis.”
Giri chuckled and turned back to Doku who looked at him with confused eyes, “Oh right…” he rubbed the back of his head, “Hey, Mom said that it’s alright that we date, and Dad’s good with it so long as I keep offering the good sake to his shrine.”
“And I mean the stuff from my secret stash,” Hayato called out, “There’s still enough to last another hundred years. I can’t drink Charon’s moonshine anymore!”
“Does give new meaning to the term ‘rotgut’ doesn’t it?” Kaze mused, “It’s nice to see that you’re so happy.”
“I think Akira cleared out most of the stash,” Giri smiled, “But I can go and get some good sake easily.”
“You tell that scorpion brat that he’s to pay back every ounce!” Hayato yelped, “I spent almost all of my money and way too many favors to build it up!”
“I actually specifically ordered him to do that,” Kaze pointed out.
“B…but… why?” Hayato asked with wide eyes, “You died first!”
“Giri, what’s going on?” Doku asked quietly, “You keep spacing out… you’re not having a dream are you? I mean, you’re awake, but that thing could be…”
“I’m wide awake,” Giri said, leaning over and kissing him on the cheek, “It’s just that something really big is about to happen in the underworld…”
“If Imamiah ever stops being such a prude,” Arashi called out.
“And if it does, then it’ll happen here,” he tapped his eye, “You don’t remember the canyon anymore do you? I have something here that lets me see.”
There was a tugging at his elbow and he looked down to see Mnemosyne grinning up at him, “If you want…”
“But wouldn’t that be against the rules?” he asked with wide eyes.
“Who’s he going to tell?” she placed a finger on her lips, “You should share things with the one you love…” she blinked, “Oh wait, that’s it!”
Doku stared with wide eyes at the seemingly sudden appearance of the gathering of the denizens of the Underworld in Giri’s lab, “What…”
“Big Sister, you gotta kiss him!” Mnemosyne called out, “He won’t admit to anything!”
Hayato raised his bottle of sake in agreement, “Forget kissing, go straight to the…”
“Kissing’s fine!” a bright red Kaze interrupted.
“Don’t you dare!” Shi squeaked as Arashi flashed him a crooked smile, “Not in front of…”
“If you say it, then I won’t do a damn thing,” she examined her fingernails, “Can’t make any promises if you’re going to be an a** and let me vanish into the void though…”
“I…” he groaned, running a hand through his hair, then stood up, placing the large volume in Kaze’s hands, and taking the sword from it, “I, Imamiah, known as both the Scion of Darkness and the Reaper, accept Ariel as my Companion.”
“That was a lot less romantic than I was hoping for,” she teased as she rested her chin on her hand, “Beggars can’t be choosers huh?”
“Ara, since you insist of making my life a merry hell,” he glanced at her, and both Doku and Giri wondered when he suddenly became an adult, “I might as well let you get it out of your system. Kaze, you watch over the book until I return,” he glared at the white haired man, “And every name better be written clearly with the time and cause, else wise, I’ll be adding a few more millennia to your sentence.”
“Master! You can’t leave him in charge!” Lethe cried, “Why not Uncle instead?”
“What, worried that he’s going to let me do some of those things that I threatened you with?” Hayato growled in undertone.
“Charon is far too blind to write down the names,” Shi said, regaining his former composure, “And he’s the only one not meddling in my business right now, judging by the fact that he stayed behind. I’ll need him to make sure that there is some sanity still left in my realm.”
“Shouldn’t we get married before the honeymoon?” Arashi asked with a raised eyebrow, and Shi paused, seeming to count to ten very slowly, “And you still haven’t said quite what I wanted you to.”
“Careful. I might just impale you and leave you in a dark cave for a few centuries,” he hissed as he took her arm, and suddenly the two boys were alone in the laboratory.
Doku rubbed his eyes, “You didn’t slip me any experimental drugs did you?”
“Yoru and Taran aren’t going to remember her,” Giri said, “So it’s up to us to get them to go to Uzu for that sword,” he turned to his friend, “Come on, I need to go get Uncle Akira to buy some sake for Dad’s grave.”

Yuko placed the last of the paperwork in her outbox as she stretched and rose from her chair, “Seems like there’s nothing but bad news lately,” she sighed, “Suna’s burnt down from riots after Gaara’s death, the Academy’s closing it’s doors…”
There was something scratching at the back of her mind about the seemingly unlucky events, but she shrugged it away, instead wondering why it was so quiet.
Her eyes narrowed, unusually quiet… and this was one of the busiest time of day for Kiri, she walked to the door, her hand reaching for the knob when it opened.
“Mom!” Kotori said happily, as she ran forward, her arms wrapping around the Mizukage’s neck, “It’s been way too long since I came to visit!”
“My little bird!” Yuko smiled as she returned her daughter’s embrace, “I heard that you graduated! I was hoping that you would come and visit before you went to report to…” Kotori broke away and Yuko froze as she felt the pin p***k as Kotori’s nails scratched against her throat, the rush of some sort of medicine entering her system.
“It’s too late to try and close off you veins,” Kotori smiled sweetly as her mother fell, “And to think, once you were a member of the organization that almost took the world… falling for such an easy trick.”
“Ko…” Yuko gasped as she felt the poison rushing through her, “Wh…” she yelped as she was kicked in the stomach.
“If I were born first instead of Karasu, I would have been loved wouldn’t I?” she snapped, “Instead I became the b*****d that you hid! Were you worried about what the village would think if you had been caught cheating on that weakling?”
“No, that’s not wha...” she reached up as her eyesight dimmed.
“Too easy to take care of this entire village,” Kotori laughed as she placed a hand on her hip, “Just a little drop in the water supply and everyone’s dead,” she kicked her mother again, “Go join my father. I’m heading to the capital next, there’s a little matter of getting my eyes permanently fixed.” she threw down a pair of glasses, “No more of this. You won’t control me anymore.”
With that she whirled out of the room, leaving the Mizukage staring blindly after her, a hand outstretched to try and reclaim her lost child.
