I would like to introduce to you what I know of the Elder and Younger* Futhark Runes, The tradition covers a span of time ranging from approximately 50 CE to about 800 CE. The oldest set of inscribed Elder Runes is upon the Meldorf brooch (50 CE), on a coast west of Denmark. Soon, carvings became abundant as early as 250 CE, an alphabet of magic that had certainly caught ablaze. What the energies, powers and order represent is something uniquely Germanic.
The word Rune itself possibly derived from two Proto-Indo-European sources; in the one, reu> "to roar", and "to whisper", referring to the vocal processes.

An added word; Beyond all academic theories and explanations as to the origin of the runes, one refers to the mythical Hávamál explanation, Words of the High One, whence Óðinn's sacrificial moment, hung upon Yggdrasil, in his initiatory 'journey' in taking up the hidden knowledge of the Runes.

* More information will be added of the Younger Futhark in time, for they are less used/known than the Elder Futhark and getting images of the earliest manifestation will be difficult. Time, friends.

Ordering of the Elder Futhark

1. There is only one Elder Futhark inscription with Dagaz and then Othala, and that is the Kylver stone ca. 400 CE, and in addition to this, Perthro and Eihwaz were flipped. This was actually a burial stone, possibly giving explanation to the flips.

2. There are two Elder Futhark inscriptions with Othala, and then Dagaz. This may be significant, because Dagaz is the rune of the paradox, giving a fitting end. (Vadstena bracteate ca. 450-550 CE, Grumpan bracteate ca. 450-550 CE)

Notes: 'j' is pronounced as 'y', whereas 'ð' is pronounced like a buzzing 'th' sound.

And now, the alphabet.

f

Description: The nature of the first rune revolves around wealth - in the general sense, meaning to be abundant in something, or wealthy in something. Lust, in all of its forms is also associated with this rune. One must take caution, for if used improperly, Fehu can be dangerous. Greed can overcome the individual if acquired wealth is not apportioned out evenly. With greed, comes a sense of power, causing one to lose sight of their goal.
