Okay, so I am a newcomer and a little lost. I started my own book of shadows but everytime I decide to work on it a bit and do research I get mixed information on everything. I really have nobody to ask because my family is Lutheran and I am not in a coven. I am completely on my own in my worshiping and I just feel like I should be working harder at it but I am having trouble doing so. Any suggestions? It would be greatly appriciated.

Without a tradition or set path, there's no real reason for a book of shadows. I think there are some newbie books that push it unnecessarily; for a lot of people, it's not that important. You seem to be more interested in forming books of notes and so forth at this point, which is great. What may be of the greatest help to you is a ringbinder with sheets of refill (or whatever it is you call writing paper where you come from). That way you can organise your notes, re-organise them, replace old ones with new ones, chuck out ideas or concepts you no longer agree with, and so on. Eventually you may end up with certain pages you would want to go in an official book of shadows - but that will take years. You will definitely grow as you go and change your mind about things (and discover that things are fibs or based on false history and so on) so it's best to start with something like a ringbinder or a folder on your computer where you can change things easily.

As the poster above me has already stated, if you have no set path or tradition you are following then you do not NEED a Book of Shadows. However, I do know several solitary and self-taught witches that do still keep one if for no other reason than to record what they have learned as a sort of journal.

May I first ask, what do you think a Book of Shadows is/should be?

I, personally, agree with Ren. A book of shadows (to me at least) is a book that keeps record of your journey in spirituality and your knowledge. I know of self-taught witches that keep a book of shadows so that they can jot down their spells, recipes, and other such information.

I have a dairy, I write my personal stuff in it, and my experiences.

If there is a spell/information/recipes/etc I want to keep I either keep it on my computer or in a small book.

The readings that I've found along my journey have said to go with what feels right so long as it harms none.
And my book of shadows is a three ring binder. It's full of information that I've found useful. The three ring binder does offer the capabilities of editing easily, for example I'm going to have to move something in mine...I had accidentally put it in the wrong place when I first stuck it in there.

A lot of people always forget that last bit - they do what feels right, regardless of who it hurts. sad

you dont need one. its just used to keep record of your rituals. for example you write if u had more success if it was a full moon. you can write plans for a future ritual or ideas.

I am also begining my book of shadows, which isnt coming along too quickly emo . But, I would definitely use a large notebook, or binder in case your tradition changes. I also am not in a coven, but I find a book of shadows to be very important.

I am also a solitary practitioner. I have two books on hand always. My Book of Mirrors and my Book of Shadows.

The Book of Mirrors is where I record my personal journey. Everything that I do and what happens to me on my Wiccan path.

My Book of shadows is where I record information. I keep the Wiccan Rede, 13 Goals of a witch and the three fold law. I also keep useful spells and potions. If i use a spell, ritual, potion, oil or incense recipe more than once. In the BOS it goes. Essentially it is a little witchy text book that you write.

I wouldn't mind what people say about you having to be in a coven to have one. If you are the first in a family line to write a BOS, than you have given your kids and grand kids a great gift.

Really a BOS is something personal. YOU dictate what it is. Put what you feel is right into the book and simply follow your heart. heart

my main book is scrapbook style, its more like a prayer/poem book. It contains mostly incense recipes for specific situations, chants, teas to heal certain ailments, so on and so forth. I'm not one to add e v e r y t h i n g into a book of mirrors/shadows. I don't add much information about the topics i'm already familiar with (wheel of the year, divination, altar setup and tools, etc.)
I also keep a journal solely for writing, but there is not much written aside from my psycho jargon, lol.

I have a 3 inch 3 ring binder I use to record info I have come across and feel like I would need it later. Such as spells I like anduse, herbal info ( Scott Cunningham's encyclopaedia of magical herbs is a good book but don't write every herb down just the ones available to you or you use the most), planetary hours, color correspondences, aura colors, divination info on tarot and runes, meditations I use, chakra info, different gods and goddesses, gem magic, incense & oil recipes and anything else I could want. I also have a book of mirrors that I use as a magickal diary, anytime I preform a spell or a sabbat or esbat ritual I record my thoughts and feelings there. I also have a book of divination I use to record any readings I do with divination tools. I hope this helps.
