I am taking an English course this summer which focuses on a number of rather random things, not the least of which is the verb "to be." This program encourages us to not use "to be" at all. At first, I thought it would be easy. I could not have been further from the truth.
So, how do you feel about to be? Have you ever considered writing without it. One thing I must say is that it does strengthen my papers. I can use verbs that are more precise and always active. This has its pros and cons, but I think the pros have it.
Let me know what you think, because, personally, I find this quite fascinating, challenging, and, above all else, fun.

Since I don't write papers or write in present tense (much), the verb "to be" seems easy to go without, but I can understand how it might be a nice challenge for those who do. 3nodding It does sound fun to try, though!

I don't write in present tense too much either, my problem is with the passive voice. Typically, I just fall into it, but I can't with these papers. sweatdrop
