I don't hate dubs unconditionally, but I think they sound awkward. It sounds unnatural listening to people say Japanese names and words in english, and there are a lot of puns and jokes that cease to make sense and ultimately end up just sounding stupid.
Plus, there are certain animes where effort is actually put into finding a competent cast for the dubbing and time is put into recording it (like Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, and a lot of the really mainstream ones), but most of the time they tend to be really lazy and half-assed. It's hard not to prefer the Japanese when you hear dubs like Kuroshitsuji, who take a character voiced by a talented seiyuu like Ono Daisuke and make him sound like some gay clown doing an awful job pretending to have an accent.
So yeah, I prefer to read subs. If I could, I'd rather watch raws, but I don't speak Japanese. >.> There are some english voice actors out there like Vic Mignogna and Johnny Yong Bosch that I respect and think are genuinely talented, but for the most part, the Japanese voice actors tend to be more talented and more experienced. I guess it's only natural though that the acting would be better in the country it originated from. >_<
