When she was only a young child, Haruhi's mother died, which left her dad to raise her. However, he worked nights and slept during the day, so she tended to get by on her own. She enjoys her studies and is irritated when they're interrupted. One day, while trying to find a quiet room, she entered the Host Club. Caught off guard by the members, she unintentionally knocked over a vase which was estimated to be over 8 million yen. To pay off this debt, Kyoya proposed she work for the Host Club as its dog {servant}. During this time, they groomed out her disheveled look and took her in as a member, keeping her gender hidden.

Despite Tamaki being president, Kyoya truly runs the club and plays the role of a puppet-master behind the scenes, earning him the nickname “Shadow King”. He takes care of the Host Club’s expenses and will even sell items belonging to the host club members (such as Haruhi’s pencil) for profit.
In his words, “use whatever is at hand, be it friend or foe.” Almost everything he does is for his own benefit, but he can occasionally display a selfless side. He is the third son of his very wealthy and influential family; thus, if he wants to take over his family's business, he must work extremely hard to meet his strict father’s high expectations. Also, Kyoya's bad temper when waking up in the morning has earned him the name “Low blood pressure Evil Lord”.

Kyouya Ootori is the vice president of the Host Club, founded by his best friend Tamaki Suoh, who is the president. Kyoya is the one who basically runs the club, paying for expenses, buying costumes, and balancing the checkbooks. Kyoya is sly, clever, and mysterious, and will use others as he sees fit. As he says, "use whatever is at hand, be it friend or foe."
Kyoya is the third son of his family, trying to prove himself to his father so that he can inherit the family business, which includes hospitals and other medical establishments.

Tamaki grew up in France but moved to Japan(his real name is René Tamaki Richard Grantaine) because his grandmother would refuse to treat his mother's illness if he stayed with her in France. He was also forbidden by his grandma to ever see his mother again. Tamaki has, starting in middle school, created the host club. Since then, it has grown into what it is now.

Mitsukuni (who is called "Hani" by everyone other than his cousin, Takashi, or "Mori."), as a part of the Haninozuka, has been raised to be a strict, self-restrained martial arts master. However, his love for cute things have put him in a tight spot, seeing as cute things are frowned upon when it comes to Haninozuka males. Tamaki approached him one day and suggested he use his love for cute and sweet things as a selling point for the Host Club.

The Morinozuka family have served the Haninozuka family for generations. However, due to a marriage between the two families, the servitude should have dissolved. Despite this, Takashi still acts like a servant to Mitsukuni. Takashi is very skilled at martial arts and kendo. He takes care of a chick named Piyo and a tanuki (a raccoon dog).

When Renge's father showed her a picture of the Ohtori family, she immediately made the connection between Kyouya and the character from the dating game she was playing (Ichijo Miyabi from Uki Doki Memorial). Her obsession for Kyouya originated at this point. She flew from Paris to Japan and enrolled in Ouran High School Host Club. After trying to change their characters, she settled for being the Host Club's manager and developed a crush on Haruhi.

Umehito and his sister are polar opposites. He hates the light; she's scared of the dark, he reveres cats; she's afraid of any animal, especially cats. In an attempt to get closer to her, Umehito overcomes his inability to be in the light, pointing a flashlight straight into his face and even going out in broad daylight to save his little sister Kirimi from a stray cat. Since then, Kirimi and Umehito have been closer and she has accepted his dark side.

A majority of the time, she's hyper, sweet, bubbly and just like her good friend Honey-senpai, but when she gets upset, she becomes cold, distant, and often hostile if you bother her. She's always been loyal to her friends and family, and like her close friend, she is small for her age and has a strength you simply wouldn't know was there just by looking at her, so don't be mean to her friends, family or her puppy Cookie if you know what's best for you. She and Honey share a love of cute things and sweets, but Yuri is also a thrill-seeker, and likes the feel of a good adrenaline rush. She's a friend to all living creatures, and if she sees anything bad happen to an animal of any sort, she's certain to take action. She doesn't think things through most of the time and usually acts solely on emotions, but when she actually takes time to think about what she's done, she'll go back and correct it if she feels the need to. ⓢⓞⓜⓔ ⓗⓘⓢⓣⓞⓡⓨ
Yuri and Honey-senpai's families were similar and very close, so they got to see each other almost every day when they were young. In spite of the two being best friends, Honey-senpai didn't know that Yuri's parents fought constantly. One night, Yuri tried to stop their fighting, but this resulted in her mother losing her temper and almost beating her to death. The woman was so ashamed and humiliated that she ended up running away from the Yokoyama household and was never seen again.
In response to this, Yuri went to Honey-senpai's home and begged to stay there; both of their fathers agreed and Honey-senpai's father had him train her in martial arts so what happened with her mother would never happen again. She eventually became as dangerously strong as Honey-senpai, but that didn't stop her love of cute things, sweets, animals and thrills anymore than it stopped his. They now attend Ouran Academy together, and she is a frequent visitor of the Ouran Host Club; she's close to them to the point that she even knows the secret about Haruhi being a girl, and even helps as if she was a member herself so as to try and keep/help the boys and Haruhi out of trouble.
Yuri's family is close to Honey's because they're so alike. The Yokoyamas are a martial arts-based family as well,but Yuri didn't take part as she didn't like violence. This changed after the incident with her mother, though; after she was out of the hospital and fully able to move, she asked Honey's father to train her in martial arts, and this resulted in her becoming about as strong as Honey was.
