Although New York is not the first state to legalize same-sex marriages (it's the sixth, actually), it is the largest in population and fame, and this is a monumental achievement for civil rights and equality that is sure to cause a ripple effect strengthening the movement across all fifty states.
The bill was passed on June 25, 2011 and will go into effect in July ('within 30 days', anyway).
Right now, I'm very proud of my country, and felt like sharing.

I live in New York and all of us were watching the bill with intense interest. Almost everyone was extremely happy when it passed. Even with all the religious nutjobs writing Letters to the Editor about how bad it is. This is one of the few times I have felt proud for my state.
