Welcome to the Gaians in College Guild. Thank you so much for signing up and sharing you college experiences! This thread was created as way for ME to get to know YOU. Just post a little about yourself in this thread such as your major, college, etc and, who knows, we might even bump into each other someday IRL through a shared interest or major.

In this thread? Alright.

I attend Canadore College. It's different than in the US - colleges here are basically the equivalent of US community colleges, so we don't have majors in college but rather programs. Majors are for university students here, just as we only get diplomas when we finish our program, degrees are for university students. Either way, my program is social service worker - so basically social work - and this is the page for it on my college's website. As you can see, there are only two years, and of the four total semesters, only three are really at the school. I've already done my first year, and am going into my second year in September - so I'll only be away at college one semester, since my field placement will be in my hometown. Then I get to graduate and get my OCD (Ontario College Diploma) in social service work.

it doesn't seem that different from the US. in our 2 yr college system (Junior College, Community College) you get certificates or Associates in the things you study there while Bachelor and higher is awarded from Uni or 4 yr colleges. Here, you can study to be a Social Worker at a 2 yr for an Associates Degree but most ppl want a 4 yr degree to show that you have dedication. Your "field placement" sounds a lot like "Clinicals" which is where nursing students spend one class a more in through their second year (at a jr college) working with a nurse at a hospital. Similar programs are available for all 4 yr students but they are called Internships and its basically legal slavery xD! The college systems between our two countries sound a lot alike!

No, I just mean that when we say 'college' it's different than the US, because we are very specific about the difference between college and university. The word 'college' can apply to universities in the US as well, as I've noticed. We just stress it more here - people have assumed I'm talking about some university when I mention I'm in college, and always ask my major or what I'm getting a degree in. It's become tedious to explain that we have programs, not majors, and that I'm not getting any sort of degree, just a diploma. XD

Okay, I can understand that. Here, when ppl say that they are in college, we get all excited and ask where and then they give a jr college's name we say "Ooohhhh," with a little bit of a pout on our face. We still value the 4 year Universities over everything else although, in today's economy, any education is great.

I'm knocking out my cores (like math, etc) at a Jr College and I'll be taking my minor and major classes at the University of Alabama located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Hi Everyone!! Im YetiBear, but you can call me Yeti for short. wink

Hiiii
I'm Megan! =-]
I'm 18! I started my first year of college last Fall at the age of 17 surprised
Yeah, I'm a youngin ;]
Youngest in my class but still playing with the big boys! (figuratively)
My major is Business! and my minor is Music. I plan to be a Booking Agent. I have yet to decide whether I want to work in a Music Venue, an Agency, or for a band itself.
Working for a band would be less stable.... and so I'm very certain I won't choose that. Even though it'd be crazy fun!
Agency would have a lot of routine, and I enjoy routine
I've worked at a Coffeehous.Music Venue and that was seriously so amazing. I want to do that but an Agency would be better pay...

I'm not great with decisions but I have a few years to figure it out.

Currently I am a waitress at a Diner in the small town in which I live. I get shitty pay and still live with my parents. I don't have a car or a license to drive. I'm a hot mess!
haha

Ladies and Gents,
I'm Matt Sakai, Or just Matt.
23 years old, was previously undecided in major until I said to hell with it and took that leap of faith. Well rewarded for my time, in my opinion.
I'm currently enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at one of the Art Institutes of America here in the States. I'm just just fresh out of my first quarter.
I plan on making something out of myself in the field(at least, thats the idea.)
Possibly working for some snazzy big end banquet hall.
The final goal is though, once I'm sure enough that I can support my own business, I'm going to be opening either my own shop/restaurant or(preferably) a catering company. smile
Guess that's about it for schooling. I'm sure you'll find out more about me as everyone chats more.
Feel free to message. :3

I hope things get better for you soon!!!
Luckily, my parents wont charge me rent because unlike my siblings, I already help around the house. I pitch in when I can and I do chores and such. Neither of my siblings do anything like that! =-[

hey, I hear you on that one! the only reason why i'm going is because they have the best foreign language department in the southeastern part of the states. Trust me, I am not a fan of the elephant or the houndstooth in ANY way. I drive an auburn blue car with a tiger in the front glass, one in the back glass, and an auburn decal on the back glass. WAR EAGLE BITCHES. Tide, meet impenetrable levy. lol.

Hey everyone! People just call me Kay.
I'm 22 (my sister calls me "old balls" because I have no more fun birthdays to look forward to).
I'm also a creative writing major and popular culture minor. I don't know quite what I'm going to do with it yet, but I'm keeping my options open to everything with only the requirement that I must love what I do. I'm definitely feeling a future in editing, but who knows, maybe I'll write a book or just silly greeting cards. biggrin
