Wow. Now this was pretty cool.
He had absolutely no idea where in the hell he was, but stretched out before him was a table that seemed to stretch on for miles and miles-- so far, he couldn't even see the end of it. Covered by a thin, plain white tablecloth, the surface was piled high with mountains of delicious, delectable entrees, most of which were his absolutely favorite: raw fish, sushi, among hundreds of other dishes he would gladly devour right then and there. Everything looked so good, and he swore that it smelled even better. He couldn't remember how he had gotten here, but he wasn't sure that he even cared. There was a giant freaking buffet in front of him, why should he be worrying about anything else? An escape plan was the last thing that was crossing his mind right now.
Olive hues scanned the edge of the table closest for him and soon caught sight of what he was seeking- a small, cloth napkin wrapped tightly around a set of silverware, positioned right next to what he assumed to be his plate. Immediately seizing it and tugging the fork and knife free from the fabric "holster", he leaned forward in his seat, mouth watering and extending a fork towards the nearest plate of raw fish. "Better dig in before all of this food gets cold.. --"
Suddenly, the shrill, obnoxious ring of Shibusen's bell broke into his mind, and he found himself shooting up in his seat, eyes darting from side to side as he surveyed his surroundings. There was no food, there was no delicious smell ... it was just a dream. He had fallen asleep in class .. again. Great.
Groaning in dissatisfaction and moving a hand to rub the back of his neck, he slumped down in his chair, watching as everyone seemed to leap from their seats, springing to action and racing towards the door, eager to escape this classroom that they had been stuck in since early, early this morning. This was great, he was going to have to ask Sophie for her notes .. and, as usual, she would lecture him about how he needs to be paying more attention. It wasn't like he ever listened to her, he wished she'd just stop wasting her breath. Unfortunately, he knew that she never would shut up about it-- she was just as long-winded as his mother, Maka, was.
Oh, that was right! He had almost forgotten- he had to put in a rather .. odd request to his teacher. The whole reason why he hadn't even skipped class today- asking him for a little help in hand-to-hand combat. He had heard a lot about Stein's abilities from both his mother and his father; if anyone was going to help him in this area, it would be him. There was no way he could go to his partner's father- he was absolutely sure that Kid would have no qualms with murdering the young man, especially now that he had become Aly's meister.
Surely Stein would be able to give him some help, surely his teacher would be able to at least bring him a tiny bit closer to her level .. He felt so bad every time he went to train with her- she was so powerful, she was so good with her martial arts, and he couldn't even land a single hit on her, he was so ... weak.
He stayed put in his seat until everyone else had vacated the area- there was no sense in trying to talk to Hakase when there were others around to hear him. Besides, he didn't want Sophie seeing him go up to their teacher. She would get curious and try to find out what, exactly, they had been discussing. It was his business, not hers, and it was going to stay that way. The moment the last student had left, he pushed himself to his feet, snagging his notebook before heaving a big sigh. This was awkward to him, he didn't know Stein well, not like Sophie did .. but, both his Mom and sister had spoken so highly of this man, and it wasn't like Matthew had never talked to him before. He still remembered this guy from when he was just a little kid, from when he and his sister would go to visit "Stein-hakase" at his lab. From what he could recall, he used to like hiding in the scientist's coat, absolutely fascinated by how big and roomy it was.
Either way, he was going to trust his Mom's words about the professor. Tucking his notebook under one arm and adjusting his tie with the other, he trotted down the steps to the front open area of the classroom, pausing as soon as he reached his teacher's desk, clearing his throat.
"Hey, Stein-hakase. I've got something to ask you."

"... so in simple terms, that's why a Meister and Weapon are supposed to view each other as partners even before battle."
This final piece of education had drifted from the elder Meister's mouth as if on cue. Why? Well, as soon as each word rolled off his tongue, the bell rang. Funny, the bell had such a different ring than other's. It wasn't some kind of sharp buzzing - it was more of some sort of tune. .. Didn't Sid always talk about that bell?
Oh well, it didn't matter. Stein's olive eyes scanned the room in a rather lazy fashion. Scratch out scanning, it was more like some low drifting of sorts. The alignment of his vision had mainly focused on the huddle of students, each getting up from their table like structure of seatings, and shuffling towards the classroom's exit. They all looked so eager to get out - not that he could really blame they. They were just kids, they probably found class boring.
Though a majority of the large classroom's population had shifted from where they once originally sat since the early morning, Stein hadn't moved from his chair. Not one bit. Simply, he just kept his position in the green-and-white stitched up swivel chair as always-- the chair turned backwards to where it's metaphoric spine was, having himself propped onto it where both of his legs just kind of tucked under the head of the chair, free to push him where ever he liked, arms rested on top.
Sluggishly, his hand maneuvered to the back of his skull, running a hand through his silver hair, "Alright, class dismissed!" The statement was a sure way for the kids to get out of the room, kind of like a Ready, Set, Go term. Surely enough, he observed as the sea of students began to stroll out of the door without a care - a bit of chit chat here and there with each other, but mainly all just waltzing out. It wasn't like some sort of single filed line -- like a certain person he -knew- would prefer - just a whole mess getting out at different intervals.
It didn't take too long for them to scramble out though. Well - most of them, anyways. One decided to stay a bit behind, which surprised him a bit when he heard lone footsteps tap against the tile flooring. And then the voice that had spoken his name caught his curiosity a bit more. It wasn't any of the students the had talked to him after class like usual, but someone he would of never expected.
One of the Evans' children - Matthew.
What -would- he ask him about? He dozed off in class earlier, maybe he wanted notes? No, he could of asked his sister for that. Sophie always took notes - it kind of reminded him of Maka. I guess Matthew was more like Soul - which was pretty much the obvious. Before responding, the scientist had blinked a bit, "Yes, Matthew? What is it?"

He swallowed hard as soon as his professor replied, feeling a wave of anxiety strike him. This guy was formerly Shibusen's strongest meister, right? Wasn't that what his mother had told him? And if he remembered correctly ... this guy had cut up his no-good-grandfather, Spirit, on multiple occasions. He remembered his grandfather talking to him about how his life was complete and total hell on earth when he was partnered with Stein-hakase, droning on and on about how he had developed mysterious wounds and scars, only to find out that the mad scientist had been experimenting on him during the night.
He also managed to recollect Maka talking about the time she and Black*Star were assigned to "take Stein down" for murdering Sid-sensei and turning him into a zombie .. apparently, during that time, he was able to stop her witch hunter with his hands alone, and able to negate Uncle Star's wavelength attack without even breaking a sweat.
There was no doubt about it, this guy was going to be one hell of an opponent, but ..
He had to get better. He couldn't keep holding Aly back by being a complete and total idiot when it came to hand to hand combat, he couldn't keep being a moron and force her to teach him every single little thing that he didn't know .. surely she had to be getting bored with it. He knew that she was one of, if not the, strongest weapons in his generation, while he was probably one of the weakest meisters in his classes. It was unacceptable, not when he had such an amazing weapon.
"You might find this request a little odd, but ... I want to get stronger. I don't want to hold my partner back anymore." He paused there, struggling to formulate his question. What was the best way of putting this without sounding dopey?
"I want you to train me. Do you think you can?"

A little curious, the older male's eyebrow rose upwards a tad. It was an odd thing to do, but he observed what Matthew did. From the pause, to seeing him just swallow whatever was stuck in his throat. Was he nervous?
It seemed like the most plausible answer, but that made him wonder again. What exactly did this kid want to ask him? What was he so afraid of? Deciding to let his natural wonder of being a scientist take over for a moment, his expression - more so his eyes - softened. Why they did such was for a good reason, he was observing what his soul was doing, if it was acting normally or not. A soul didn't just show characteristics, but emotions at times.
Ah .. there it was. It was trembling a bit.
Though he was wrong on some kind of scale -- it wasn't exactly nervous, more so of tense. Though, that still didn't answer why the young Evans was tense. The ungodly silence sort of made this worse, seeing as it was a rather long pause.
And then finally, Matthew broke the said silence. And Stein? Stein's attention was caught, frankly he listened to each word that sort of staggered out. So he wanted to get stronger, huh? Funny, he remembered the young Meister's mother always saying that kind of thing. That they wanted to get stronger, that they didn't want to hold their partner back, things amongst those lines. So, looks like he got some traits from her after all, huh?
It took Franken a moment to process all this -- focusing on it, while trying to push away the feeling of what was it? Nostalgia? Out of his head, his brain, his thoughts. For now at least, anyways, "What kind of training exactly, Matthew?"

A strange sensation suddenly washed over the young meister, and he narrowed his eyes at his professor. It almost felt as if his teacher was staring through him, as if he could see everything he was thinking and feeling ... It wasn't like he hadn't felt that before, he often got it whenever Sophie or his mother were trying to get a secret out of him, or trying to trip him up when he was telling a little, tiny white lie. Not only that, but he had gotten the same sensation when talking to Uncle Kid from time to time ....
This was Soul Perception, wasn't it? Wasn't this the ability his mother was somewhat "famous" for?
He, himself, didn't have a handy little ability like that. Sure, he could feel a few wavelengths here and there, but he wasn't able to sense them in a vast range like his sister and mother could. That certain genetic trait had almost completely passed him up, much to his dismay. He always thought it would be pretty neat to be close to a human radar ... Sighing there, he shook his head. Complaining about it wouldn't change anything, and he had managed fine without it so far. It wasn't a big deal, he obviously didn't have to have it in order to survive.
Setting his notebook down on his teacher's desk, he moved to look the older man in the eye, ignoring the strange feeling he still had. "What kind, you ask? I was thinking something along the lines of plain old hand-to-hand combat training. As of recently, Alyssa Death has become my weapon .." He paused there, taking a deep breath.
"I'm tired of being so far behind her. I feel like she could have such a better meister, and I want to do everything I can to at least get a tiny bit closer to her level. My Mom has spoken a lot about you, and she's mentioned how fearsome you are in battle ... so, I can't think of any better instructor for me to have. " At that point, his nerves had certainly calmed down now that he had gotten that off of his chest. Now was just the matter of his professor agreeing to this ..
"I figured I could trust you to help bring me up to speed. I know you've done training with Uncle Black*Star, too." After that statement, he immediately moved his hands to his side and bowed to his teacher, now keeping his eyes locked on the floor. Damn, this was embarrassing .. was he really going to beg this guy for training? Just how desperate was he?
"Please, Stein-hakase. I'm not sure who else I should turn to with this request."

Stein had noticed Matthew's eyes narrowed - though his vision wasn't exactly focused, nor locked with his student's, he still noticed it when he had seen that light . . what was it? Twitch? Flicker? One of those described what had happened with his soul for a minor second.
Speaking of his focus, it wasn't exactly pinpointed or targeted on anything for a few moments. The narrowing kind of scrambled and toyed with what he was paying attention to at that dire moment. And of course, listening to the light pat of something being flopped up onto one of the wooden desks had practically broken his alignment of thoughts. It seemed like even the lightest thing could readjust to what captivated his interest.
Stein hadn't rushed to see what the sound was - it's not like Matthew had anything on him. He wasn't the kind of kid to place something threatening or even just something dumb onto a flat surface he could obviously see. Thing was, he had to figure out where said object was placed. As the noise bounced off the walls, ringing in his ears, Stein had tried to figure out what its distance was, with the volume. It sounded close.
The most obvious place was at his desk. It wasn't like Matthew somehow skid to the otherside of the classroom, throwing whatever item he currently held onto one of the student's desks or anything. An eyeball slid to scan and note what was on his desk. .. Oh, it was just his notebook. I guess he couldn't hold it forever.
Without hestiance, Franken inched the direction in which his head was turned back over to Matthew. Still interested in what kind of feelings had dwelled over the younger male, his eyes shut and blinked back open in an instant - it seemed like a normal blink, but it wasn't. He just reactivated his Soul Perception that was all.
.. You know, he never had studied the personality and characteristics of Matthew's soul before. Then again, he did sort of already have a guess from what he witnessed when Matthew was in class, or leaving and entering. But that wasn't enough to get a define answer, was it? Maybe, maybe not.
Oh, but of course, he didn't have the time to do that. Not right now, anyways. Besides, Matthew had spoken up again. Considering he was practically asking for some kind of training, he had to listen. And that he did.
Hand to hand combat training, huh?
Now, that made him wonder. Had his mother informed him of what he could do? It still did remain fresh in his memory, when the group were still a bunch of newbies, on a remidial class to take his soul, under Shinigami's orders. Of course, it was just for training, and Shinigami had asked him before hand to do such a task, as well as become an instructor at the Academy.
Wait -- yes she did. He should of figured that she would tell her offspring, considering she had a first hand experience seeing some of his abilities.
Complete focus was drawn upon everything the white haired teen said. He listened to how much determination was there in the words he spoke. Of how wanted to get closer to his partner's level, as if he didn't want to let her down. In return, this earned him a bit of a smile - a corner of his lips had lightly tugged upwards. It wasn't a big smile, just a very small one - hard to see, but it was still there, glued to his face.
Each word was intaken, and processed, and stored somewhere in his mindset for later. While listening to his his request, he had noted the mention of Black*Star, who was .. affectionatly given the title of Uncle. Did Black*Star brag, and let that information out to him? Or maybe Maka knew? He wasn't too sure at that.
Stein was a tad unexpected at the bowing. Not many had done that before - but it had equaled a large amount of respect, right? Right. This kid .. he was serious, determined, why turn him down? Slowly, one of his hands shifted off of its comfortable resting spot on the chair's head, moving upwards towards the bridge of his glasses. Lightly, the spectacles were shifted upwards, the ceiling lights from above captivating a gleam on his lenses. With that, he began, "Sure, that's fine, Matthew. I suggest that you don't be late, though. We'll be training in the forest near the school - and you may run into someone else training if you're late."

Seconds felt like hours as he remained frozen in position, eagerly awaiting the answer to his question. He suddenly felt like a complete fool-- what in the hell was he doing here begging to this guy? What in Shinigami's name had possessed him to ask this guy, the one who had threatened to turn his Mom's skin into sandpaper, the one who had beaten the crap out of his Dad ... the one who had been feared by enemy organizations for years and years, and the one who was such a valuable asset to Shibusen's forces. Without this man, the school would not have been nearly as prestigious and revered as it was today ... Besides, even if he agreed, what stopped that guy from tearing him into a million bloody pieces? If he wasn't nearly as strong as Aly was, then he had to be a thousand light years behind Stein.
He had to start somewhere, right? Sure, he had gone over the basics of hand-to-hand combat with Aly, and he could build on that from his training with Stein. There was no sense in his partner backtracking so much in order to bring him up to date, and who knows. Maybe this teacher of his could bring out something in him he didn't even know he had .. Then again, that was a pretty slim chance. Either way, he was determined to do this, and he was determined to get better.
He'd have to watch out, though. Stein knew how to use his soul wavelength just like Uncle Star did-- attacks like that could easily incapacitate him, especially when his soul wasn't extremely powerful. If he remembered correctly, Aly also used her own wavelength in her attacks, and those always packed one hell of a painful punch. Luckily, he never had experienced Black*Star or Stein's wavelength attack, but ... he had a feeling that he would know what, exactly, it felt like soon enough. After all, hadn't Stein used that against his mother and father a long, long time ago? Not only that, but he really didn't seem to be the type to hold back when it came to training.
His train of thought was brought to a complete halt when his professor agreed to the training regiment and he immediately shot up, flashing him the biggest grin he could manage. Yes! This was his chance to finally get better, to finally catch up to that extremely talented weapon of his. He couldn't wait to see the look on Aly's face when he would finally get to the point where he could take her down in the dojo ... but, he knew, that was a long ways off. He also knew he would have to work very, very hard with the professor, and would probably end spending a majority of his weekends training. As long as it meant that he would eventually be on Aly's level, he wasn't going to complain.
"Thank you, Hakase! I'll repay you for this, somehow. This really means a lot to me." He snagged his notebook from his professor's desk there, tucking it back under his arm while Stein continued, setting the date and place for them to meet. "Alright. I'll be there first thing in the morning. Thanks again!"
With that, he nodded to the older man and quickly made his way to the door, immediately letting out a huge sigh as soon as he was out of sight. Damn, that guy was pretty intimidating up close ... He'd have plenty of time to get used to it, though. For now, he needed to get home, rest up, and get ready for the next day: a good night's sleep would be needed, especially when he was almost 100% sure that he would be working for a majority of the day.
The walk from Shibusen to his family's apartment was not very long-- at most, it only took about ten minutes. He never thought he would be so relieved to see the front of his apartment building, practically flying through the doors and up the stairs until he reached the right apartment, rummaging through one of the pockets on his jeans and tugging out his key before pushing it into the keyhole, giving it a quick turn to the right in order to unlock the door before pushing it open, removing the key right afterwards.
From what he could see, his mother and father were still out ... Sophie was probably out with Alex-- after all, it was Friday, and the two of them tended to go on dates and sleepovers, since his sister was usually busy studying during the weekdays. Dropping his notebook on the kitchen table and hurrying into his room, he busied himself with writing a note for his parents. Chances were, they would be asleep when he was waking up to go meet Stein ... but, there was no way he could tell them what he was doing. This had to be kept secret for now ...
After finally coming up with a legitimate reason to be leaving early on Saturday morning, he placed the note on his bedside table. Whenever he got up tomorrow, he would just leave it on the table in the kitchen-- his mom wouldn't miss it if he put it there. Finishing up everything he needed to for class on Monday and getting everything in order for the next day, he gladly welcomed sleep by that point, drifting off in order to rest up for the next day's events. He knew he would need every minute of rest that he could get.
- - - - - - - -
For once, things had gone smoothly through the morning. He never was much of a morning person, but .. excitement for his new training fueled him, woke him up, and motivated him to move quickly in order to get to the forest. He had left the note on the table, like he had planned, for his mother-- he'd said that he was going to the arcade for the day, and that he'd be back later that night. Sure, it was strange for him to be waking up that early for something as simple as the arcade, buuuut ... his mom knew how much he loved video games, and he was sure that she wouldn't put it past him.
With a small backpack in tow, it didn't take him long to make it to the designated forest. He had made sure to pack a couple of first aid supplies; he was almost certain that he would end up bleeding in at least one place, and if he came home a complete bloody mess, his parents would have a heart attack. Sophie would, too, if she was even home by then ...
So far, he didn't see Stein. He hadn't ventured very far into the wooded area, maybe only about 15 feet or so, but he had to be careful. The last thing he needed to happen was him getting lost here. Wouldn't that be great? Hakase's new student to train gets lost in the woods, never to be heard from again. Chuckling at his own thoughts, he stopped in front of a rather large, thick oak tree, dropping his backpack against the trunk before leaning against it, surveying his surroundings. The professor had Soul Perception, and he knew that he would be able to find him in an area as open as this.
There wasn't any sense in him risking getting lost when his teacher could easily find him here. Not to mention, it wasn't like Hakase wasn't expecting him ... he would be keeping an eye for his student, right?
At least, he hoped he would ...

It’s kind of interesting to see a kid’s reaction to the littlest things you’d say – well, for him at least. They’re so full of energy, and things like that. Matthew’s soul seemed so tense earlier – but when Stein told him yes, it just got filled with such a large amount of eagerness from what the scientist viewed. And of course, seeing the young Albino spring up from his once bowing posture, with the largest grin he’s ever seen on the boy’s face assured him of that too. He could hear the thanks he was babbling out, only to return such with a rather small smile himself, with a little comment of, ”Yeah”, pausing for a moment to see the notebook snagged from his desk – not like Matthew would forget he put it there and accidentally left it there. That wouldn’t be too good, now would it? Of course not.
Said miniature smile had stayed glued onto the scientist’s face as Matthew trotted his way out of his classroom. As soon as he left, it dropped in a heart beat. It wasn’t at the displeasure of Matthew asking him for training or anything, he just didn’t see a reason to keep a goofy grin onto his face all day. A glance traveled over to the entrance – or exit, whichever floated your boat – of the large instructing room, listening to the tapping of footsteps against Shibusen’s tile flooring. It was a constant tapping that just kept getting quieter and quieter every second.
Once the constant noise died out to nothingness, he finally just breathed, running a hand through his hair. Well, it looked like he’d have to cancel out any sort of plans – namely research – for that day. Not that it was too big of a problem – he was curious on how Matthew fought. He spoke so . . . unconfidently of himself, maybe he could do somewhat decently? Matthew could do bad, he could do swell – he’d just have to see for himself. Though, he had to admit he’d miss research – he had to finish up some notes on a certain study of a Chain Resonance link. It was only drafted and written onto paper – which was probably in an unorganized stack right now, somewhere, ontop of his desk – and had to be transferred to his computer documents for later.
Still, he hadn’t helped train a student in awhile – it could be fun. Matthew would just have to be careful, that’s all. Be more on guard . . things like that. Stein’s hand retreated from his silver locks, inching towards one of the pockets sewn onto his lab coat, snuggly placing it in like it just belong there. It started to dig around in there for a bit, before fishing out a red and white, rectangular cartridge full of his favored brand of cigarettes. Eagerly, he tugged on the flap of the box, bending it back a bit to see a grouping of his cigarettes. Fishing one out, closing the box, and putting it away, he popped the stick of poisons and cancer between his lips, now scrambling for his lighter. He really had to organize his pockets, if that was possible. Time taken, he pulled out the lighter, holding it near the cigarette tip, flipping off the cap, clicking a button, and inching the ember towards the cigarette. With it lit, the flame was died out, cap flipped back on, and lighter put away. Breathing in, he reached for the cancer stick, before tugging it out, and letting an easy wave of smoke flow from his pursed lips, ”Well Matthew, let’s see how you’ll do.”
- - - - - - - -
Rolling on the green, lush, forest grounds was a small, used cigarette. It came to a slow halt as the energy was sucked out of it, before being crushed by a gray boot, and a digging heel putting it out. With a rather tired grunt, Franken had leaned his body against one of the trees. His vision skimmed around the forest a few times, before just focusing on the morning sky. He had told Matthew to come early today, but where was he? He was probably on his way, right? Stein would have to listen for him, if he took too long.
Or he could have been asleep and forgot. He didn’t know.
Sleep. Stein actually had gotten some last night, surprisingly. As of recent notice, he had been staying up most nights, typing up his beloved research documents, surviving off of coffee. Which as always, got Marie suspicious on why all the coffee was gone on shorter notice. Eventually she had found out, and pretty much nagged him on how he shouldn’t do things like that, he needed more sleep since he was a teacher, all the things he’s heard over and over again. But no, much to her pleasure, he actually got some sleep. He’d need it for this kind of training, he couldn’t fight well when lacking sleep for so many days.
For the most part, the forest was mainly quite – save for a few birds here and there. That was just nature. Well, the silence didn’t last for too long at that. A sudden chuckling rang throughout the doctor’s hearing, the voice that spawned the element of laughter soundly oddly familiar. Like he hadn’t heard the laughter its self before – but the voice sounded like he had heard it before. After the chuckles had died out, there was a light little thunk, like something had leaned against a tree. A tree near him.
He could of guessed who it was, but he had to check just to be safe. Sluggish and almost cautious, he examined his surroundings, left and right, and in most directions. Yeah, he could feel a soul on the opposite side of the tree. And it was exactly who he was expecting – Matthew. Sliding off of the surface he relaxed on with a minor grunt, Stein casually strolled around the tree – possibly scaring him at that, spotting his student with ease, and trotting on over, lifting a hand slowly to give a rather casual wave, ”Hey there, Matthew.” He began, with a simple greeting is all, before eyeing the back pack a bit, ”What’s the backpack for?”

Ha. Just as he had expected. It didn't take long for the professor to pick up on his arrival, and he jerked his head up to stare at the older man the moment he heard that familiar voice address him, unable to suppress a small smile. Leaning over to pick his backpack up, he tugged on the zipper and held it open, holding it out to his teacher in an attempt to display the contents to him. "I just brought a few medical supplies, I had a feeling that I would be needing them .. besides, my mom and dad don't know I'm out here training. They'll freak out if I come home in a bloody mess, so I'll have to do my best to clean up any injuries here." He gave himself a satisfied nod there.
"Who knows, Teach, maybe you'll be needing some of them~"
Yeah, right. Who was he kidding? Shibusen's strongest meister versus a small fry like him ... the outcome of this was rather obvious. Stein wouldn't be walking away with even so much as a scrape or a bruise ... In fact, he, himself, would be lucky to get away without any broken bones.
Briefly shaking his head, he stepped away from the tree, glancing over to his teacher. Thinking about the worst possible scenario wasn't going to help him any-- if anything, it would only weigh all of his limbs down with fear, cloud his mind, and ultimately make him that much worse in battle. Moving one hand to the back of his neck and kneading the muscles there, he tilted his head to the side. "Are we going to be training right here?"
It was kind of sorta crowded around here ... he couldn't imagine a congested area like this to be the perfect spot for hand-to-hand combat training, but it was ultimately up to his professor's judgment. Stein had far more experience than he had, namely in the teaching field ... his final word was certainly backed with plenty of knowledge; he wouldn't make a stupid call. He was the type to think everything through thoroughly, to analyze every detail, and then make a rational decision from that point ..
"Or are we heading to a clearing or something?"

Oh. That's what was what inside.
Just some medical supplies, was all. Stein had figured that Matthew had brought along snacks in case he got hungry, or just bandages for himself. Not full out medical supplies for injuries he could recieve - guess he really did have some brains from his mother and father. Save, for the, you know - dozing off in class, leading to a rather disgruntled Sophie pestering him about notes. That, or Stein throwing one of his much duller scalpels at the mini-Soul, just to scare him enough to awaken him.
... That second option worked better. Well, in Stein's retrospect at the least. At least Matthew wouldn't be asleep for the whole class, only a portion, and would actually pay attention. Or try to, anyways. Being scared out of your sleep doesn't exactly have the best after affect of focusing, from what Stein knew, at least.
Well, Stein was kind of proud. It was one of the smarter moves Matthew did that Stein had witnessed so far. ... And he was kind of right on that, anyways. Stein was Shibusen's graduated Meister, -- or, was one of them. He was sure that Maka, Death the Kid, or even Black*Star had surpassed him over all these years, but who knew? They were exceptionally powerful as children, after all. More or less, Matthew had the right idea on bringing a back pack full of medical supplies for injuries.
... Especially considering he hadn't told his parents, if Stein was hearing him right. In some ways, that was smart, in some ways, it was dumb. On one hand, it was kind of a good thing - sure, Maka and Soul were his students, but they had seen what he could do on his own. Hell, he had taken them out when they were just like newbies, and simply sitting in a swivel chair regardless. They trusted him probably, sure, but they wouldn't know the out come of the training, or really how bad their baby boy would get harmed.
On the other hand, it was a bit stupid. Kids weren't meant to lie to their parents, right? And surely they'd notice bandages or something, if they looked hard enough, wouldn't they? So, it'd basically fall into a mess of Matthew explaining everything, and possibly getting in trouble with them. But whatever, what happens is what happens.
Stein nodded his head at the younger Meister, "Good. It's best that you keep some medical supplies with you when training." His tone there was straightforward, it was a fact. Maybe you couldn't bring medical supplies into battle, sure, but when training? You'd need it. Sometimes the Dispensary wasn't always open, since Nygus did have to go home herself. She did have a life.
But, medical supplies didn't occur to some, which was kind of ... bad, if they got injured in battle combat.
Then he caught Matthew's little joking-- or was it confident? -- remark there. Very funny, Matthew. If only you didn't remind him of Soul so much. Oh wait, Matthew was his son, of course he had some genes from his father, including those little remarks like that one.. His lips had twitched into a grin of sorts, but soon died down.
Stein blinked when Matthew asked him the question of where they were going to train. Were they going to train here? Probably ... not. Not in the first sessions of training, anyways. Matthew would need a much clearer battle field at first. Just so he wouldn't worry about the area around him when he was attacking, or attacking - the various trees could cause a sort of problem for one thing, hitting one of those things with your back hurt more than someone actually thought.
Especially depending on the speed.
But, if Matthew kept coming back for training, and got used to a clear landscape, they'd move to a more ... crowded part? It was only natural, after all. Not every single battle field would always be picture clear of rocks, buildings, or anything. They'd still have to deal with the world around them when they fought, and they'd have to take tactics into consideration with that. It's just how things worked, every piece of land was different.
The scientist had stopped himself for a moment, his vision glancing around their current area. His eyes acted like scanners as he observed the surroundings around the two. Well, there were trees - trees everywhere. No, Matthew wasn't ready for this yet. Not now, maybe another time.
""Yes and no," Stein responded, snapping his vision back to Matthew, " For right now, we're going to train at a much clearer area. The trees around us could cause a problem for you right now," Again, he was being completely forward with this. He continued, "But, over time, if you still come and spar, we'll move to a more crowded location. A battlefield isn't always going to be a perfectly clear space, you'll have to deal with the land around you sometimes." With that finished, he turned on his heel.
Franken certainly knew where he was going. Like Shibusen, he had traveled around he a lot as a child. Not for the scenery, like some kind of tourist, but to find a clear training area. Luckily for him, he knew of a few, "Come on." That was all Stein said - motioning his hand towards the Evans to follow his lead.
His feet had guided him through the various areas of the forest. Most areas were completely stuffed with trees, making it hard to get through. But he knew which way was the right way to go. Every so often, he'd glance over his shoulder. He didn't want to lose Matthew now. Getting lost in a forest and ditched by your teacher wouldn't exactly be the best day for a teenager, would it?
Eventually, they had stumbled upon their location. It was good for training - there was a good opening there. A number of teams had trained here themselves - whether it was Resonance training, sparring with one of your team mates and their Weapons, or even Chain Resonance Link trainings. Though, this wasn't the only clearing like this - there were more, that was a given factor, but this one was the closest to the two males.
"Alright, this spot is where we'll train for now." He stated, his feet guiding him somewhere once again. He had been walking to the other side of the clearing, but not too far from Matthew. He'd stand there waiting a bit, watching for him to slide off his back pack, and stand on his side, if he understood. .. And if he didn't, "Take off that back pack for right now, we'll need it later. Step a few feet forward, and get ready." This ... was some kind of preparation for Matthew. Just so he wouldn't be like, 'hey, what are you doing over there teach', or anything.
.. And Stein would get in his own fighting stance when he knew Matthew understood.

As soon as he heard what he considered to be praise from his professor, he gave a curt nod, proceeding to swiftly zip the backpack back up and tossing it onto one of his shoulders. Anxiety was taking his toll on him now-- he was starting to have second thoughts about all of this. Starting to feel the urge to back out, to just work at the dojo instead.
But how would he get any better if he did that? Punching a dummy only got you so far, and it wasn't like he was actually learning any new skills that could possibly benefit him on the battlefield. Thinking back on it ... he didn't really have a special skill, did he? Aly had the ability to use her wavelength as a weapon. Alex and Sophie both had Soul Perception, and he ... what did he have? As far as he knew, he didn't have anything.
What a pitiful excuse for a meister, especially compared to Alex, his Mom, and his professor.
He shook his head there, clearing his mind. Thinking that way wouldn't help him improve, either. "That sounds good to me. I was kind of worried that we'd start of in an area like this. Wasn't too appreciative of the idea of you knocking down a few trees with my body." Giving a grimace there, he glanced over to his teacher. It was now or never. If he waited any longer, he'd get cold feet. He'd let both himself and his partner down with his inferior ability, and he'd just feel worse about all of it. He had to get better. There was no compromising on that point.
"You lead the way, I'm not familiar with these woods at all. Never been here before... and I don't really feel like getting lost." Giving a nervous sigh there, he kept his gaze trained on his teacher, ready to follow him.
